Why would Charlotte Little marry Andrew Goodson in 1847 in White, TN and nine years later marry Thomas J. Anderson in 1856 in White, TN?

Or are Lotty Littel and Charlotte Little two different people with similar names?

I searched for a while, but could not find any information on a marriage between Jane Latham and Andrew Goodson in North Carolina or Tennessee, however, there was a Jane Latham, born abt 1800 in Tennessee, living with Charlotte Goodson in 1860 and 1870 in White County, Tennessee according to US census records. Also, on the 1850 census in White, Tennessee, "Jane Goodson" also born abt 1800 in Tennessee, who was living with Andrew and Charlotte Goodson before Andrew's death in 1856.

It would seem likely that this Jane Goodson is the same Jane Latham in the two later records (unless two women of the same age with the same first name decided to trade off living with the same family). Perhaps the census taker just mistakenly grouped Jane Latham in with the family surname on the 1850 census? Or she was related to the family and then she married and changed her name, or someone died and she decided to go back to her maiden name? Or perhaps Jane and Charlotte were sister wives at the same time until Andrew died? lol. It's all a bit confusing.

I also found a death certificate in White, Tennessee for what I believe to be Andrew and Charlotte's daughter, Rebecca (Goodson) Swindell (22 Mar 1848-12 Apr 1930), which lists her parents names as "Anda Goodson and Charlottie Jenney." The death certificate was filled out by her son though, so that information is dependent on how well-informed he was. I searched for death certificates for all the other children to no avail. All of their Tennessee marriage records do not list the parents names.

i messaged one of my late husbands cousins that does genealogy to see what he had , he messaged me back with this

I am not sure that Andrew Goodson ( born cira 1798-1800) was ever married to Jane Latham (born cira 1800), nor that Jane Latham was William Goodson (born cira 1922) mother. I could never find any clear information on Jane Latham. Most genealogy trees I find has her paired with Andrew, and listed as Williams's mother, but no credible sources. I found this attached info from Hennessee family a few years ago. I also found info from Hennessee which stated This Andrew Goodson was disfellowshiped from his church for what he did. In a nutshell, Jane Latham may have been Andrew's sister and Charlotte Little may had been his neice and he married her and had several children with her. I have personally began to question whether Andrew is William's father, but perhaps his uncle and was raised by Andrew. I have only been able to find record of only one marriage for Andrew and that was to Charlotte Little. Also not sure of Andrew's full name. Hope this helps. If you can figure out this tangled mess, or find more info then let me know.

I found a record of a Jane Goodson who married a Joseph Latham. They had a daughter together named Charlotte. I believe the Jane Latham in the household of Andrew Goodson in the  1850 US Census is Andrew's sister Jane "Polly" Goodson Latham. And Charlotte "Lottie" Little is actually Charlotte Lathum and she married her maternal uncle Andrew Goodson. I do not know where the last name Little came from, but I have read information where some who had known Charlotte personally, had told she was "little Lottie" or some such as that. The little I assumed from what I read was referring to her bodily size. But I cannot if this is the case or not.

In unraveling complex cases such as this, it help to approach such in a deductive way. First look at all the characters or people involved, and then identify who they are, where they may fit elsewhere. Once you find were as meant characters as possible fit then it makes figuring out the remainder.

I have personally pretty much did this for this case myself. My conclusion as I shared before is this: Jane Latham is Andrew Goodson's widowed or divorced sister how had moved into the household with him along with bringing her daughter Charlotte Latham along with her. Perhaps Andrew's wife had died at the time or just after the birth of his son John L Goodson. If Andrew's wife had died, then there would have been a need for his sister to come help with the house and the children. In one of the earlier US Census perhaps 1840, there was a listing of a female named Eliza COBB. I think it was Hennessey Family or a comment there which said this Eliza COBB is thought or assumed to be Andrew's sister. On those original US Census you will notice that the name Jane LATHAM has the last name in all caps just as does Eliza COBB. The all caps means that person has a different surname than the surname of the head of the house.

So neither Eliza COBB nor Jane LATHAM were Andrew Goodson's wives. They were Andrew's sisters. Charlotte Latham or Charlotte "Lottie" Little was Andrew's niece. As to Andrew Goodson's first wife and/or the mother of his three oldest children, she may have either died in child birth in 1835 or some time not too long afterwards. Somewhere between the 1930 and 1940 US Census. This is my take and my opinion after spending much time studying and research this case. For now I am still looking for another woman that is not Jane LATHAM or Eliza COBB or Charlotte Little. -Rob
