In GEDCompare, it seems to be only possible to accept or reject a match.

Question

In some cases, I just don't know. I reluctantly reject the match because there is not enough information to accept it, but it could be a relative which could later be accepted as a match when more information is added to the rejected match.

If you reject a match, WikiTree will create a new profile and mark it as a "rejected match" -- indicating that you have determined that these are different people who happen to look alike. If you don't have enough information to tell, you probably shouldn't be marking a rejected match -- creating an invalid rejected match will cause new headaches later on.

You don't have to accept or reject a match -- you can can also simply "skip" people in your gedcom. If you are uncertain about some possible matches on a particular branch of your tree, it would be best to skip that whole branch and import it later after you've done more investigation (for example, contacting the people responsible for the other profiles). I suggest skipping a whole branch because skipping individual profiles from a branch can leave you with a lot of unconnected profiles needing to be connected.

This response is out of date due to the advent of GedCompare 2.0.

• GedCompare 2.0 doesn't have the "skip" option.
• Also, selecting "reject" in GedCompare no longer marks a rejected match in WikiTree. The opportunity to mark a rejected match comes up only if you create a new profile.

I have had similar qualms as Sharon (especially when adding a spouse for whom I have no further family) and wished for an Unmerged Match option.  This would create a new profile but mark it as an Unmerged Match with an existing profile.

This is particularly relevant when the proffered match is a non-open profile where I can't see any details. An Unmerged Match option would give me time to work on this later, and I could use my Find Merges (Unmerged Matches) started by me as a to-do list. Also an Unmerged Match would hopefully alert the PM of the proffered profile. But that might be a stretch...
