Relationship Finder prioritized fewer generations over direct relationship

The Relationship Finder seems to prioritize fewer generations over a direct relationship.  It shows that [[Normandie-45|Henry I]] is my 28th GGF.  It stands to reason that his father, [[Normandie-32|William the Conqueror]], would be my 29th GGF.  Instead, Relationship Finder says he is my second cousin, 27 time removed.  The only reason I can think it would do this is because there are fewer generations involved.

I would think that most people would rather know the direct relationship.  Is this something that can be modified?

BTW, Relationship Finder is a great tool and a lot of fun to play with.

I had a similar thing happen to me, recently. My newly discovered 6th cousin is in the same generation as me - through his mother.

But when I reworked the connection for me and his father, I got a different relationship. In fact it went up by 2 generations and the father and I became 8th cousins once removed.

Clearly the mothers family had a closer relationship to me than the fathers family did!! It was quite confusing until I worked out what was happening.

I wonder if there are some generations missing from your direct line on WikiTree and if that is why the relationship finder is using an indirect line?

In the example I cited, there really can't be a missing generation between the father and son ancestors.
