Shared Photo: Mary Curry Hockridge nee Stitson

Question

Mary Hockridge migrated from England to South Australia in 1877 with her two youngest daughters,Sarah (aged 20) and Emily (aged 19), twenty years after her husband, Thomas Francis Hockridge. She was listed on the passenger list as M. Hockridge, single, 48, seamstress, no doubt to get the cheaper fare for single women under 50. She was 51 at the time.

She seems like a strong woman.  Maybe a bible in her hand?  Very nice :)

I think you may be right about the bible. I'm guessing but it looks like she's in a photographer's studio, presumably in Adelaide. And she appears to be in widow black which would mean it was taken between 1913 and 1916. But what I love is her "smile" and the set of her jaw. A strong woman for a tough life.

I think your are right Dave Roberts this might have been made after her husband had died. But she does  look like a strong woman that been through a lot of things in her life.
