How to join the Slavic Roots project [closed]

The Slavic Roots Project became official in October of 2016.  Our purpose is to be an umbrella group and resource hub to the various projects supporting specific slavic peoples and to support smaller Slavic groups that might find it challenging establishing their own project space. Also - we aim to help those new to research in countries where Slavs predominate or who may not know much about their Slavic origins.

To join the group, please post a new answer here on this G2G thread, and we'll be sure to issue you a project badge.  Also, check out our project page for instructions on joining our mailing list.   You'll want to check our our sub-projects if you haven't already.  And if one doesn't yet exist that you think fits, we are happy to support you in developing it. Don't forget to follow Slavic Roots among your g2g tags!

Here's our project page:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Slavic_Roots

Also -- if you are already a member of one of the sub-projects and I've neglected to give you a badge (and you want one) -- do let me know, here or via a direct message.

Here's a general grouping of Slavic peoples:

* West Slavs: Czechs, Poles, Slovaks, Silesians, Moravians, Kashubians

* East Slavs:  Belarusians. Russians, Ukrainians

* South Slavs:  Bosniaks, Croats, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Serbs, Slovenes and Bulgarians

Who should join?  Anyone with any degree of Slavic heritage is welcome, as well as anyone interested in research on profiles with Slavic relevance, or in supporting such research.

No worries at all - in fact this is the new method.  Previously you would drop me a note on my profile, public or private.  We're just now catching up to conform with how other projects handle it!
Our leader at the Dutch Roots started a likewise post and I think it does work.............

I typed an answer how to join the Servic_Roots lol but had to delete.

Good Luck Michael. I am also WikiTree Greeter and will keep this threat in mind.

Night now!

Welcome!
I am here to learn about my ancestry as some of my family came from Slovenia and probably a few other places in the area! I am trying to learn about the Dreniks and Hegles for starters, but as I go on more names will probably pop up (if I can figure anything out that is)

My father's ancestors are South Slavs, from what is now Slovenia. My maternal line seems to reach back to mid-1800s Pomerania. Just becoming interested in trying to research those areas.

Michael, I thought there was going to be a Slovak Roots subproject.  Any word on that?
by Nan Starjak G2G6 Pilot (378k points)
We have the project page (which you are already aware of, I see):   https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Slovak_Roots

We're using the Slavic Roots mailing list for most of the subporjects currently, low traffic as of yet.

We have a Slovak Roots sticker now, Nan!

Yes, I stumbled across it!  Posted about it this morning.  smiley

I would like to join the project.  My grandmother was Slovenian, born in the US but both of her parents were born in Slovenia.  Is there a Slovenian sub group?

I'd like to join.

I've gotten to my tree wherein it is time to start adding Russian profiles.

I engaged on the Russian_roots page but it looks like no one is managing that page.  I started a discussion for it here:

http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/600122/what-happens-when-project-leader-goes-away-doesnt-come-back

It was suggested that I inquire over here.

I believe I am a member, but I recently got back my 23 and me results and my Eastern European half is not all Ukrainian! Turns out genetically I am pan-slavic with Polish and other matches, who knew? My grandparents spoke Ukrainian and went to the Ukrainian church. They variously described themselves as Austrian (when they emigrated there was still the Austrian Empire), Ruthenian, Ukrainian, etc. The map was changing and they fit the answers to the current map. I am finding matches on Ancestry and 23 and me that are probably on this side but my tree and theirs don't go back far enough. Third and fourth cousins mean we need probably 2 or 3 generations beyond my great grandparents. Haven't gotten into going back to the Mormons to get the records on film. How many have done research in the old country?
by Sue Hall G2G6 Pilot (167k points)
I can confirm you are a member :)
23andMe's reference samples are wrong: they have a lot of Polish samples in their database, so even people with absolutely no Polish ancestors (like me) get Polish as their most likely origin.

(In general, DNA-based ethnicity estimates are for entertainment value only. Ethnicity is a self-determined category, closely related to language. It is not genetic.)

I have "slavic" roots. I think I am confused though, cause my relatives are from Crimea, Ukraine, South Russia. So I am not sure whether Russia or Ukraine should be the "project" for my family branch, or both. Hello all. I like what someone put as part of the Slavic Project, "...help those new to research in countries where Slavs predominate or who may not know much about their Slavic origins". This Sounds like me.
by Sharlimar Gamlen G2G3 (3.8k points)
Welcome -- Slavic Roots is the overarching project, but if you have roots in each Russia and Ukraine you would be welcome in both subprojects.  I will issue the badge for Slavic Roots.
Thank  you. Would this also be the same project for my "Prussia" roots? (It seems like it, but again I am unsure).
I'd check with German Roots on that, unless you know the ethnicity involved and it isn't Germanic.
Thank you. I will look at the German Roots you suggested checking on. (I did look on Wikipedia and seen that prior to Germany, Prussia was in the land that later became Germany. But I am stumped after I get to these two relatives of mine as to parentage and all. I will continue to look the direction you mentioned. Von_Riesen-16 and Von_Riesen-25

I did add German_roots to my profile of watching after reading your response.

Pleased to join if you'll have me. I speak fluent Russian, and have studied other slavonic languages also. Can help with translation. My DNA shows I am 9% East European (mainly Russian haplogroups).
