Angeletta Miserva May, born 5 Nov 1854 (Ohio), died March 1938 (Nebraska) married Jason Eli Lemmon (11 Feb 1872 -- Sturgis, Michigan).  Jason died in St Joe, Missouri in 1907.  In 1910, Angeletta is listed in the city directory as Angeletta Lemmon, wid of Jason E.  By April 19th (when the page of the census she is found on), she was May Lemmon.  She continued to use May as her given name until her death in 1938 in Nebraska.  Does anyone have a clue as to why?

Hi Anonymous! Did you ever get a response to this? If not, you might want to message the profile manager directly with your question. You'd be more likely to get a response in this case. You can do so by sending a private message. The link is just above the Public Bulletin Board on the right hand side of Ageletta's profile.

Maybe Agneletta Miserva was simply too much of a mouthful? ;-)

I've seen many cases where a woman took her maiden name as a middle name upon marriage.

Was she the only child of her parents? Or did she have no brotheres? It's one way of keeping a family name alive when it would otherwise "die out."

But it also might have been as simple as she liked/preferred May. Or perhaps it was her nickname upon marriage. Perhaps her husband called her "May" as a nickname, and when he died, she kept it. (Oooh, that's my favorite interpretation...)
