project protection - what project

how can I tell what project is protecting this profile and why.  Other than j

Jewish roots which I added, I don't see any indication of a project or category listed.  Shouldn't the project protecting the profile be indicated so you know who to contact or discuss changes with?

I don't think there's any way of tracking them all down to add templates.

The usage of the flag has changed over time.  In this case, it was added just to set the direction of a merge.
If I had to guess, it appears that this profile has been through multiple merges - often a PM will set that protection to on as there have been previous discrepancies in the parents, or a merge in the past merged away the parents, and it took a significant effort to get everything put back into place. In those cases, checking with the current PM's is a good place to start, and if no one objects and you need to lift the protection, it shouldn't be a problem.
The change history shows that the profile was protected in 2016 (not all that long ago) with the notation "PPP profile pre-merge." That supports RJ's guess on the reason for the PPP.

I haven't dug through all of the profiles for ancestors and descendants, but on the profiles I've checked (including all of the ancestors named Abraham), I don't see any indication of the basis for concluding that this family was Jewish. Is this an inference from the surname? Wikipedia asserts at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_(surname) that the name has many origins -- it's not necessarily associated with Jewish roots.
based on my DNA , Sephardic Jew < 2%,  and the tree, and my Great Aunts documentation, pg 1 (https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/6/67/Skinner-3799.pdf) that his great grand daughter is Jewish.

‘Nancy J Abrams, born 1839 (Jewish), Her Father, My Great Grandfather, your great great, was James Smith, born 1832. Lucinda Smith and Frank Smith were cousins (My Grandparents).’

Thanks for explaining. You have some interesting research challenges here, don't you?

I see the parenthetical indication that Nancy Abrams-707 Smith was Jewish, but I also see that her obituary emphasizes that she was a "consistent Christian." I guess that might have been emphasized in the obit because the Kansas community where she lived might have been suspicious of Jewish people. I'm sure you're looking for some historical documentation of the family's Jewish history, but in the meantime it would be a good idea to plan on adding some information to the text of Nancy's profile and possibly others.

updated to show descendants of Thomas to me.  They go two directions, then reconnect with a cousin.  Does that make me my own cousin???
created this to add to profiles.  [[Space:Jewish_Roots_of_Thomas_Abraham_1751_-_1818]]  adding to his decendants.
DNA Jewish - Faith Christian, two different things
The statement "born 1839 (Jewish)" gave me the impression that Nancy was strongly identified as Jewish.
That was more than DNA.
Sorry, no.  She was saying she was of Jewish lineage.

Nope. Not us. We could if requested but only if there is a reason which I don't see. It would more closely fit under Southern Pioneers if you are looking for a project to add. It would need some work also - sources and bio  - to meet standards for project.
Sorry. I'm not very clear. I mean there appears no reason for PPP. Any profile that fits can be added to the project.

When you add the United Kingdom template, you type in something like
{{United Kingdom|England|Cornwall|Mevagissey}} and you get an icon, together with
so-and-so came from Mevagissey, Cornwall, England
Join United Kingdom Project (with a link)
Discuss united_kingdom (a G2G tag)

Would it be possible to alter the PPP template in a similar way?  The person doing the PPP would type in {{PPP|Southern Colonists}} (or whoever).  Then each PPP badge would have the icon and would tell you which project had PPP'd it.

I agree, it is totally baffling to land on a PPP profile and have no idea who to contact.

maybe because only leaders can add it, it should be something like {{PPP|Leader ID}}

I wouldn't have thought so.  A leader would create the template, yes, but the point is that the project doing the PPP is typed inside it, such as
{{PPP|Southern Colonists}}
{{PPP|Magna Carta}}
{{PPP|Spanish Inquisition}}
{{PPP|Quakers}}
and so on.  That way, you could contact the relevant project, not add yet another thing that our Leaders would have to do.
But there isn't a project for "check before merging" and who would be part of the project?  How would you know that was the reason for protecting? How would you know who to contact about it?  Maybe there needs to be another way to handle, or a merge pre-approval project.with volunteers who would review and research?????
You seem to be missing the point.  It says 'check with the the project before merging'.  This does not mean some mythical Check Before Merging Project.
It means 'check with whichever project PPPd this profile in the first place', and the template I am suggesting would do just that: it would name the project so you would know where to go, who to contact etc.
Your 'merge pre-approval project' already exists.  It is whichever project PPPd the profile and, again, the template I am suggesting would tell you which one that was.
There is NO project.  The ppp was just added to prevent a merge.
Added by a project.  In your own original question, you asked "how can I tell what project is protecting this profile and why".  My suggested template would show you 'what project' and you could contact them and ask 'why'.

But it was only a suggestion, and I was trying to help.  Sorry if I confused the issue. :(
You are right.  I assumed because it was 'project' protected, there must be a project associated with it, but as the thread progressed, It appeared that there was no project, and seems to have been a step taken to prevent any merging with this profile.  Would love it if your suggestion would work to identify who to discuss it with, but not sure how that could work without a project associated with the profile. Kind of leaves you in limbo when you want to work on the profile.  I ended up making the change and added a note with the reason for the change.  Thanks for trying to help, it's just one of those odd situations that doesn't fit neatly into the plan.

I happened upon this profile and question as I was prepping the {{Jewish Roots Sticker}} ... at first I was surprised and wondered if it were under the JRP, but clearly the PPP preceded the JR project.

Profiles do/will need to be associated with a project and managed by a project account to be PPP'd for the reasons stated (being able to have a place to discuss/manage/collaborate)

For this particular profile I think it is necessary to identify a relevant project and determine if the profile is actually ready for PPP status.

I don't know if you'd like JRP to be that project, but if so we'd need your help in establishing our criteria & standards.

Thomas Abraham does not belong to a project. I locked him to protect his LNAB for an upcoming merge. It says that right in the change log why I protected him (-:

I removed the lock.

There are four requirements. All four need to be met before protecting a profile.

One: They must fit within a project
Protected profiles must fit into a current or pending project.
