I need assistance. I am trying to clean up a profile.

This is the result of a GED upload from Ancestry.  I have been working on it but there is so much stuff that I don't know what can be deleted and what should be reformatted.  I started on the biography.  I would really appreciate some guidance because there are many more I need to do.

Thank you Susie and Greg for your answers.  Still working on the same profile but I think it's coming together.

Hi Lynn,

Firstly, thank you for all your hard work! It's really making a difference when you clear up profiles and is really appreciated. :-)

I'm sure others will have more to add but here is my basic approach to profiles:

  1. I prefer in-line sourcing where you put the source at the end of the data you are referencing between <ref> </ref> brackets. It will appear below the ==Sources== line providing you have <references /> under there. This makes it much easier to read if someone has stumbled across the profile and wants to know which sources goes with which piece of information.
  2. I never put something into the bio unless I have a source to go with it. If it's information I have gleaned from family trees or stories or leads I am following I put it in a separate section ==Research== at the bottom until I find a source and move it up. I tend to bullet point the information under there using * as it again helps me to read it easily later.
  3. I learned early on here at Wikitree that finding sources that are not behind a pay wall are much better when collaborating with others. Not everyone has paid a subscription to the same sites as us. You might like to check out https://www.familysearch.org as this has a lot of free sources and there is a nifty copy/paste of the source underneath it which can save you time. I use pay-walled sources as a last resort and then am careful to provide as much information as possible in the source.
  4. In terms of adding children, I am in favour of listing them on the parent's profile. There is no right or wrong way of doing this. I personally do a subheading ===Children=== under the bio.
  5. You have ==Sources== twice (I assume from a merger?) so will need to remove one of them.

    Thanks Lynn! Susie :-)
