John Shields (husband of Mary Chipman) ancestry?

+3 votes
Is there a definitive/document ancestry for John Shields, husband of Mary Chipman?

John is Shields-295, and Mary is Chipman-106.

There is an ancestry for John Shields that goes back into Northern Ireland that has limited, if any, documentation that I can find.

Elizabeth Pearson White, in her 2008 work on the descendants of Hope Howland, states that his ancestry is unproven.

Does anyone have good information on his ancestry?

Perhaps something here. Mrs Harmon was a respected historian for the Tennessee Historical Society

Thank you, I'll check this out.
A source for John Shields and Mary Chipman is "A Southern Mayflower line of the Chipman family via Howland"
Mayflower Descendants Vol.52 Nos1 and 2 Winter 2003

If you could find a Mayflower Society book of John Howland descendants that includes Mary Chipman, it might have the names of her husband John Shields's parents.

Thank you for the reply. Elizabeth Pearson White, who is now deceased, and who was the primary Mayflower authority for the descendants of John Howland stated in her treatment of the Chipman family (Mary Chipman is a Howland descendant) that the ancestry of John Shields is unproven as of 2008. I was wondering if any later research changed this.

The Howland silver books do not cover these descendants, it is White's later book of the Howland family that does.
