He sounds familiar, think a relative. There are applications online for that, also widow's pensions etc. I do know of one ruling in my family that was reversed. Also, in Revolutionary War and Civil War, wasn't unusual for some men to be refused such things because reported to be deserters etc. I have found that wasn't always accurate. Two cases in my family lines involved men who were scouts/spies and on assignments when injured. Time reported AWOL turned out to be time in hospitals or assignments.
