Data Doctors Challenge: Fathers

DD Challenge D-Day Image 1This challenge stems from our Spring Clean-a-Thon where we focused on cleaning up database errors generated by Aleš.

Each Monday we will post a new Data Doctor Challenge in G2G that focuses on a specific theme, such as a certain type of error or a specific holiday.

Participants can work on the errors throughout the week. The following Monday a winner will be announced.

Scoring and tracking will be done the same way it was for the Clean-a-Thon: Once you finish work on an error, you can set a status and enter a comment for it. The tracking is then done automatically.

Each weekly challenge ends Sunday at 11:59 pm EDT. The participant with the most points will be the winner for that week and get a winner's badge.

For more details, see the Challenge page.

Since it's Father's Day this Sunday in the U.S., we picked Fathers for the theme this week so the list of errors are all father related.

You can get to the list of errors here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DD_Challenge_Fathers

Post below if you are participating and what you're working on!

Please stay away from any 16th-18th century Balls of New Haven, CT. Significant errors have been identified and a *small* group is starting to work on them. Thank you!
Hate to be Mrs Picky, but I feel that '210 Father dead before birth' should really be father dead before CONCEPTION. I've got a father dead before birth in my own family tree, well documented. It is not an error.
Christina, you can leave a message post on the page for error 210 here:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DBE_210

regarding your thoughts on the name of the error.  The leaders will see the message.  Thanks! (Emma--DD Project Coordinator)
No worries. I hadn't managed to find that page, and I see at the bottom that they say the system flags an error if death is 10 months or more before birth.  Might suggest a change of title though.
Eowyn, what happened to the WWII & I believe it was WWII deaths challenges? How can we find out if all of those were completed? Is there a Category for the Data Doctor Challenge so we can see the list of all the challenges and add to our profile so we can go directly to it like the other Categories? Once the challenges are completed they could become inaccessible!
Ok, thank you Emma. So, how can you tell which ones have been completed besides checking the status on each one? Why can't all the challenges be listed on 1 page?
You will have to ask Aleš about that.  I do not know if he has updated the list from that challenge, but he can help you either update that list or pull a new one for you if you will send him a message letting him know what you want.
Sounds good Emma, thank you
I can see a male dead before birth.  But how did he get to be a father?

Oh, it's the father who died, not the child.
Even father dead before conception won't work today.  With artificial conception, a child can be conceived decades before his birth.  A try at artificial conception frequently leaves several embreos in frozen storage.
Bravo Emma!! Take a bow!
Thank you Bobbie!  We were neck and neck this week weren't we?  Well done you!
You keep me moving! :D

Because today is Monday does something begin today? One more thing, those that are more seasoned at correcting please do not be disappointed if us rookies step on your work and do some ourselves. I do understand that many have listed what they are doing  please don't be angry at us rookies. I am doing this as a learning experience not a race.  One last thing. I have done some  of the errors on my tree and someone went behind me and did something after I completed my errors and now they took credit for it? IMHO Wouldn't it be much nicer to explain to a rookie what is going on instead of taking credit for something? How will we learn? Is getting a "point" really that important? I thought this was a friendly site. Sorry I do not know how else to explain it. It is intimidating when someone corrects without an explanation and without giving a rookie time to change it himself. Thanks

Jerry, do you know how to set the status for each error you correct? If not, I will be happy to walk you through it.
I believe that I do know how to set the status on the errors. I have worked on errors on my tree so I have a little practice. If I have any questions, I will certainly ask you. I am a rookie to errors and not to the site. but I have done some. Thanks a bunch :o)
Great!  Feel free to message me if anything comes up :-)
If both of you set status, you will both get a point. If you think, it is being abused, let me know and I will check, if it just a mistake here and there, or is it common practice of the user.
Jerry it is great that you are working on errors as a newbie!  I am a big believer in learning by doing.  You can see who made changes after you as each person is identified by their ID in the error report status page.  If you click on their ID it will take you to their profile page.  You can then click on Private Message and send the person a quick note asking what they did in addition to what you did.  I would ask it as a way of learning.  Sometimes we see that someone has done something with an error but it is still not completely fixed or in the case of profiles needing more info it might be a case of adding additional sources or biographical elements.  There should also be a reason for the action listed on the Error Report Status Page.  Keep working on errors!  It is a good way to learn how to create better profiles.
Thank you Laura. I also believe in learning by doing. When you learn by doing it also improves your tree (or whatever you are doing). There will be less errors. Most errors are typos anyway. I had this error about calling  Pennsylvania part of the USA before 1776. It was a very interesting conversation with everyone tossing their ideas and their facts in. It was a very good history lesson. Whoever said you cant teach an old dog a new trick was wrong. Besides correcting my errors, I also became more aware of the problem and the way to solving the problem was exciting.

I will start off by Working Error 211

Thanks!

by Emma MacBeath G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
211 is DONE!!

I have never proposed, completed and cleaned up after so many merges in my life ( and I am an arborist).  It was fun,  but no more merges--for at least the rest of this week :-)
Bravo, Emma! You'll be merging in your sleep.
Probably!  I already to genealogy in my sleep :-)

I'll have a look at error 210 (father dead before birth) 1800-1899. but will mainly concentrate on English profiles, so would gladly welcome some help for other countries.
by Carol Keeling G2G6 Mach 8 (81.9k points)

I was already independently working on 210 with the Netherlands Custom List and will continue to do so, not linked to this challenge (I go for high quality, not quantity).

I would hope we all strive towards high quality in our work, Jan.

These challenges are to encourage focus on motivating each other to complete work.  For instance, I worked on more errors this week because I knew others were doing the same.  Some of us need that kind of motivation and accountability.

I will do the ones I can to help :)....Will there be a leaderboard during the week just to see where we stand?
by Melissa Austin G2G6 Mach 3 (32.9k points)
There hasn't been so far, but I hope one gets set up :-)
I think it would be a great to have one.
I disagree. I think that would create more competition to see who gets more done. Is this site about quantity or quality? I have seen members repairing errors that I created while I was repairing them. I think that anyone that is repairing data that they should be more respectful. I am sure I will get plenty of email telling me how I am wrong or how good the system works but it is painful to see other members  disregard for other members requests.

I'll shoot at the 203's. I'm working from the bottom up, so if someone else works on them, we shouldn't have a problem.

I'll work from bottom up Lisa, maybe we'll meet in the middle someday ;)

I'll start on 206 - father too old but I'll be doing Scottish and English ones so if anyone else wants to cover other countries, feel free to jump in :-)

by Sheena Tait G2G6 Pilot (118k points)
So pleased to hear you've been working on this Sheena. So many Australian errors turn out to really be at the Scottish end of things and they usually defeat me.
It's actually really depressing - so many of the Scottish ones appear to be pure fantasy or "right name, right country" but the dates are centuries apart.

It's really going to be a slow job as I'll have to go forward several generations to find a reasonably accurate profile to work backwards from :-(

Better late than never, I'm in. I'm going to work on the 210 errors on my watchlist.

Hi, I'll work on 205 errors (father too young). I'll check out the open ones and work on them.

Since Darren has temporarily stopped working on Error 209 (Father is also a sibling), I'll do some of these.  I'm starting from the bottom, in case anyone else wants to work on this list.  I expect this will take some time because most of the ones I found so far have no sources, so I'm adding in-line citations to prove the accuracy of the changes I'm making.
