What do I do when a possible match has no profile manager?

I am importing a GEDCOM file for my husband.  He is a descendant of Lt. Col. Hal Dixon, and I have found several possible matches as I compare the imported file to other Wiki Tree profiles. I found a possible match between my Sunnah Dixon, daughter of Henry Dixon, Sr., and Elizabeth Abernathy and Dixon-1819.

With the other possible matches, I have clicked merge, but only sent the owner a message to be sure they were matches. Dixon-1819 is an orphan. What is my best approach to deciding whether or not to merge, please?

You could adopt it and then merge it.

I understand feeling a bit nervous about merging a profile someone else created, without being able to ask that other person about it.

You should look carefully at the sources cited (look up some sources if there aren't any) and the connected family members (plus any additional connections beyond them) to make sure this truly is the same person. Once you are convinced of that, you can have peace of mind when you complete the merge -- and the satisfaction of making a new connection.
