Biography Builders June/July 2017: Fathers

Question

In honor of Father's Day, June 18th, this months theme is fathers. So build wonderful biographies for men who had children.

Biography Builders Goal: To make profiles as complete as possible with well-written biographies and sources. You should research as much as you can find on a person, writing the information onto the profiles to create as complete a life story as you can for that person. Sourcing should be full citations. This includes adding categories and links to events and people connected to that profile and citing all those additions. See the first month for examples of how to participate.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section.

• birth date/place
• names of parents
• marriage date/place and spouse name
• death date/place

Biography Section:

• Written sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
• Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
• As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
• Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
• Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
• List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
• One of the suggestions was siblings. I think this takes up real estate.
• Explanatory remarks, if needed (i.e. Disputed persons sections, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
• Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you own the copyright or they are in the public domain).
• Categories/Projects.
• Connection to the Global Tree.
• All duplicates merged or initiated.
• Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
• Historical context as related to the person's life.
• Sources, Sources, Sources.

Thanks.that's great. I'm starting by adding the Genealogically Defined link to my profiles that are already fully defined except for my grand-parents as i don't want to list living children.

So I have a question about "Genealogically Defined" with regard to children who are of no "genealogical consequence."

For instance, my great-grandfather had four children who died as infants. One I know about from a newspaper report, one from a very early Florida Death Certificate (1919), but the other two (born and died between 1910 & 1920) are only known from family stories and memorial stones which we estimate were placed in the mid-1970s.

Based on the explanation of "genealogically defined," I assume a lack of records for those two children will prevent J P Driggers from ever qualifying as defined. Is my assumption accurate?

Would a picture of the memorial stones with the details of the family stories be enough to be considered a source for the two without sources?

The memorial stones don't identify a parent, so I'd say no.

Then US Census is invalid before 1880.

Debi's assessment of the stones, I'd say is correct. No parents listed does not genealogically define a relationship. Plus the fact they were put in later throws doubt on their accuracy. However, since this is the 1900s, there is a good chance that there are cemetery records, that have this information. I would contact the cemetery. I'm always amazed at the information they have.

Yes, US Census, before 1880 is invalid as genealogically defining parents, since it does not list relationships

The cemetery association records have been transcribed and are available online. According to the notes on that transcription, the records for the cemetery are inconsistent and incomplete. I've looked at the records of another local cemetery association which has ties to the one the infants are in and I'd say the assessment is accurate. I will still work to getting to see the original records but don't expect much.

In the process of connecting 1 profile to the Tree, 2 of the profiles I had to create ended up with Defined Biographies. Not the usual way to do things, but it sure was interesting.
