Hi

I'm looking for the birth record and parents of an Elizabeth Hodgson, born in Masham, Yorkshire, England, between the years of 1820-1825.

She appears in the 1841 England Census at Masham, with who I assume is her brother, Joseph Hodgson aged 10, but no other family member.

Thanks for any help.

Yes. I've searched all listings. Ancestry, Family Search, Find My Past.......Nothing for an Elizabeth Hodgson at Masham, or even a Bedale.

A search of Masham at Family Search, does bring up a few Hodgsons in that area, but because Elizabeth appears solely with a 10 year old brother Joseph in 1841 and there is no Census prior 1841, there is no more evidence to link her to any of those people. And I'd rather not just guess who might be her parents......In the 1851 Census, she is married at Thornton in Lonsdale, Yorks. So no immediate family members on that either, bar her husband.

I've even searched her brother Joseph, but no record either for a Joseph at Masham, or Bedale.

Which is why I'd asked if anyone had specific access to Masham Parish records. It's a last resort, after searching for her for months. And those Parish records for St Mary's are not online.

Maybe of interest from Gentlemans Magazine.

Remarkable
Hi Doug, There are literally loads of Hodgson families dotted around Yorkshire areas and yes I'd seen that, but I don't think it's my Hodgson family. I think my lot were actually in Masham itself, not near it. It would be pretty cool if they were my lot though :)

Masham, is just a small village in the Bedale district and I think the only church, is a St Mary's, so she'd likely be registered there.......

in the 1841 Census in Masham where she appears, there is a residence note 'Cross the Hill'. A street in Masham, maybe? A check on Google reveals it is now known as Cross Hill, Masham, Yorks.

I know everything else about her, who she married after 1841, her children etc....I just cannot find a birth record in a Masham, despite on every Census , 1841 and after, she lists herself as born at Masham. And this ones particularly annoying me, because it's on my maternal line that I'd like to get further back on.

Thanks anyway.

Hi Donna,

You may find your answer at FreeREG.org.uk.  I entered her name, dates, North Yorkshire and 'Place' of Masham. I also ticked the boxes for Family Members and Nearby Places.

I saw at least 3 possibilities.  Don't forget to click on the 'Row nn" on the right hand side for more details.

Hi Kevin, Thanks. I wasn't aware of this site. The fact we can choose nearby places is good, because despite I'm in the UK, I'm not too familiar with areas of Yorkshire, so this kind of pinpoints the best possibilities.

I just checked it, put in relevant details, dates between 1819-1832 etc. Nothing at all for Masham itself.

However, between that 13 year period, nearby places has found 2 possibilities,..... but the Elizabeth baptised at Northallerton, 1820,  parents James and Elizabeth, could possibly be her. She might not necessarily have been baptised in Masham.

Why I'm more leaning toward her, is because there is an 1841 Census with a widowed Elizabeth Hodgson, born and living at Masham, with daughter Mary Hodgson present, born 1824. And a Mary Hodgson born 1824, is showing on the results, as a sister of an Elizabeth Hodgson 1820.....Father James Hodgson, who died before 1841, was a Labourer. .....Elizabeth is listed as Labourer, in 1841 at Masham.

Worryingly though, there is no Joseph Hodgson listed as a sibling of Elizabeth, between those 13 years. The only Joseph, is the son of a Mark Hodgson, mother Ann. ....A Joseph Hodgson aged 10, born between 1828-1832, appears with Elizabeth on the 1841 Census in Masham. ....However, it doesn't state the relationship. I'd assumed he was perhaps a brother.

I'm going to look further into the info supplied though, so thanks again.
