Case Study of a

I was entering a family of cousins this morning and one of them, Emeline Conger- 9 showed an existing duplicate, so attached her to her parents Reason Iams and Phebe Clark.  But there were existing parents Rezin Iams and Phoebe Clark (which hadn't shown up as matches when I created them - Boo)  Anyway it wasn't too bad as the parents were orphaned and I just adopted them and merged into them and cleaned up the results.  Those were the only ancestors  but Eleanor and her husband Ephraim Conger have a full line of descendents all the way down to the present, and all orphaned.  I decided to look to see what had happened.

It turns out a Ralph Polen-56 joined Wikitree on 10 Sep 2012 and added a GEDcom of about 1000+ profiles the next day. He then was fairly active until 17 Dec 2014 when he left.  Now most of his activity during this time was merging, which is fine.  And it appears the information in his GED, RALPHP~1.GED comes from cemetery records from the Greene County Pensylvania area.  As such, each of the profiles do have a real source  And they typically have birth and death dates which is good.  But they don't have a real Bio and they do have some junk.  So had I known this before the Clean-a-thon I could have gotten a ton of credit for cleanup I expect.  Anyway, if you have relatives who died in Greene County, PA you might want to look up this GED (go to Ralph's profile and click on his contributions) and help clean it up.

Btw, I'm working on the Congers again, and there are a number of other members of the family which I don't know what to do with. They still have Ralph Polan as the profile manager but they have privacy markings so I can't edit them. I'm not sure if it's worth trying to bother the higher-ups to checking to see if some of the profiles should be either opened or eliminated.

Have you tried to get on the Trusted Lists of any of the Non Open Profiles or contact him through a Private Message?

If you have and and have received no replies after about a week, then you should follow the steps for Help:Unresponsive Profile Managers under Open and Public Profiles.

If you haven't tried to contact him, then follow the steps on the Help Page above to have their Profiles opened.

Well, I don't remember whether I tried to contact him, but since he now has his profile as red (private) and his profiles are rather far out as a cousin goes, and one at least is only 4 years from being automatically changed, and I'm closing in on 4,000 profiles in my watchlist, I don't know if I want to worry about going through the whole deal of forcing profiles open.  Not that you're wrong, or anything.  It's just that I'd rather put my effort into entering profiles which have less work involved or are closer to my core family.
His data may be closed off to us, but not his Contributions and he hasn't made one for a little over 4 years.  He is ripe to have his Profiles opened up. ;)

And if you're talking about the Profile of the 2nd cousin of the wife of the brother-in-law of the husband of your 2rd great Aunt's sister-in-law.  I totally understand your point.  LOL

All the best and keep chugging along Dave.
