Hi Herb,

Yes that is an excellent question, I believe you can get notifications of those not on your watchlist if you ask the Profile Manager  to add you to the Trusted List

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Steven!  I put in a request, and with luck soon will know if this works.
Great I hope this works

The barriers to watchlisting profiles are a major drawback of Wikitree, in my opinion.
To watchlist a profile, you need to submit a Trusted List request for that profile.
To watch activity in a surname, add that surname to your list of followed tags.
Some projects, including New Netherland Settlers, have become managers for many project profiles and enable members to see the project's family activity feed.

Thanks, Ellen!  Barriers.  WT seems to have a lot of them, but I'm new and trying not to whine.  I have put in a Trusted List request.  The surname is a pretty common one (Elliott), so if I tag it the relevant info will drown in the sea of Elliott activity.  I see that with my Nelson tag, which to me renders the surname tag useless.
Hi Herb,

That's a great mindset.

Keep up the great work

To watchlist a profile, you need to submit a Trusted List request for that profile.

Agree that this is a hindrance.   Profiles old enough to be "Open" should have watchlisting on an opt-in basis, without need for a Profile Manager's manual approval, or for waiting out the unresponsive profile manager process followed by making oneself a manager of the profile.

It doesn't have to be so unwieldy to get notifications when another WikiTreer takes an interest in our ggggg-grandparents.

Hi, Herb. I don't follow any surname tags either, but I figured that option was necessary to mention, since some folks find it very helpful. :-)
I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to follow the Smith surname.  ;^}
Thanks for not whining, Herb. It's appreciated. :-)

WikiTree has many complications. We try not to add more. Separating Trusted List permissions from watching would have benefits, but also add complexity. (Note that even on an Open profile there are important things that only someone on the Trusted List can do, namely merge, change the last name at birth, and change the privacy level.)
