When did William Scriven marry 2nd wife Mary Mosher and who are their children?

William Scriven [[Scriven-57]] (1727 - 1827) married twice. First to Mercy Lewis[[Lewis-8687]] (1726 - 1818), in 1749, in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island. Second, to Mary Mosher [[Mosher-483]] (1755-1809) about 1769, also in Westerly. Or, at least, that's what I found in my research.

Problem #1 is Mercy's death is after Mary's. Was there a divorce or are my dates wrong? ( Revision: I found a DOD for Mercy of 1768 on a Pedigree listing on FamilySearch. [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:SBVR-VW5] This may solve the problem--see Mercy Lewis' revised bio.)

Problem #2: the first recorded child I have for Mary Mosher and William Scriven is Elipha Phally Scriven (1770–1856) born 15 AUG 1770. That would make William 43, which seems to work, but Mary would be only 15! My guess is that my dates for one or more of these people are wrong.

The William Scriven family moved to Petersburgh, NY, from Westerly, RI, around the end of the Revolutionary War. Mercy Lewis' death is recorded as 1768, so it must have  been William's second wife who accompanied her husband in the move west. But Mary Mosher's death is recorded as 1809 in Grafton, Rensselaer, New York (which is adjacent to Petersburgh). Mosher family documents say Mary and her daughter Polly died in a house fire.

I'd appreciate it if someone could verify the dates of the two wives and which children belonged to which wife. Once I'm sure I have these facts straight, I think I can sort things out.

Do you have any sources besides GEDCOMs? There is a gravestone mentioned in the biography, but no FindAGrave record, instead, a broken link to FamilySearch. I'll look for a FindAGrave that matches.
Thanks for trying, Julie. Apparently, "Mercy" was a favorite given name. The three who had graves in the same area all have different husbands and are older than the one I've cited.

Dear Bob,

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has William Scriven with THREE wives.  He is patriot ancestor #A100794. Wives are 1)  Mercy Lewis, 2) Elipha __ ,  3) Mary Mosher.

Approved applications through five children are included in the DAR membership lists.  Check it out, or let me know if you cannot see it. Hope this helps. -NGP

Elipha is, in all probability, a daughter. Thanks for trying though. Don't want to pay DAR to see their records at this point.
I think you can see quite a bit without paying, but maybe it is because I have the DAR Members' view.

The five children of William Scriven(s) in DAR approved applications, first three with Mercy Lewis, last two with Mary Mosher:

1) son John (1751-1830)  m. Elsy Crandall

2) son Joshua (1754-1824) m. Mercy Chapman

3) daughter Mercy (1761-1839) m. Silas Jones

4) son Matthias (1775-1827) m. Anne Sabin

5) son Benjamin [no dates] m. Temperance Sabin

Obviously, this is just one more source.  I do believe the DAR takes some care to keep good records.  -NGP
Thank you for the details, Nan.
