William Scriven [[Scriven-57]] (1727 - 1827) married twice. First to Mercy Lewis[[Lewis-8687]] (1726 - 1818), in 1749, in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island. Second, to Mary Mosher [[Mosher-483]] (1755-1809) about 1769, also in Westerly. Or, at least, that's what I found in my research.
Problem #1 is Mercy's death is after Mary's. Was there a divorce or are my dates wrong? ( Revision: I found a DOD for Mercy of 1768 on a Pedigree listing on FamilySearch. [https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:SBVR-VW5] This may solve the problem--see Mercy Lewis' revised bio.)
Problem #2: the first recorded child I have for Mary Mosher and William Scriven is Elipha Phally Scriven (1770–1856) born 15 AUG 1770. That would make William 43, which seems to work, but Mary would be only 15! My guess is that my dates for one or more of these people are wrong.
The William Scriven family moved to Petersburgh, NY, from Westerly, RI, around the end of the Revolutionary War. Mercy Lewis' death is recorded as 1768, so it must have been William's second wife who accompanied her husband in the move west. But Mary Mosher's death is recorded as 1809 in Grafton, Rensselaer, New York (which is adjacent to Petersburgh). Mosher family documents say Mary and her daughter Polly died in a house fire.
I'd appreciate it if someone could verify the dates of the two wives and which children belonged to which wife. Once I'm sure I have these facts straight, I think I can sort things out.
