Hello Connectors!

It's time to begin another month of connecting the unconnected across WikiTree. We'll get the project page updated soon with last month's tallies, but for now, it's time to start connecting!

WE HAVE A TIE!

June's top connectors were Gillian Thomas and Bob Keniston with  18 connections each.

Connectors connected 62 profiles to The Tree in June, and the total since the beginning of the challenge is 1263.

Thanks to all of you who participated the June Connectors Challenge. If you haven't checked out the Connectors Chat page, you should! There is a lot of chatter there about what everyone is working on.

Now on to the Connectors Challenge Rules:

  1. Pick any WikiTree profile which is not connected to the main tree. (In other words, that profile does not have a box at the bottom of the page, showing the degrees of separation from Kevin BaconRosa Parks, and Queen Elizabeth II of the Commonwealth Realms.) You can look for unconnected profiles using the Unconnected People tool, the Unconnected Profiles category, the Unlinked_Profiles category, or you may run across an unconnected profile in the regular course of your research.

  2. Either add a new profile for a first degree relative (parent, spouse, sibling, or child) of the person on that profile as a link toward a connected profile, or else connect an existing profile on WikiTree to the profile you're working on.

  3. Add a source to the profiles involved in the connection showing the relationship between the two profiles. This could be a census record listing a family, a marriage record, a death record listing the spouse and/or parents, a birth record listing the parents, or any source which demonstrates that the two profiles should be connected to one another. Your source needs to be cited as closely to the style recommended on our Sources help page as possible to count towards your tally.

  4. If you are adding a new profile, add a second, independent source for that profile. (For example, if you add a spouse because of a marriage record, then look for a birth or death record for the spouse you're adding.) (Note: The reason for this rule isn't to discourage you from adding people. But as you have probably already learned, even official documents frequently misspell names, so adding an independent confirmation of the name helps to save other researchers time in trying to find records that don't exist, because the person's real name was not the same as showed up in the linking document.)

  5. Answer this post, creating a numbered list, and including the two profiles and the kind of source you used to make the connection. (For example: "1. Smith-123 added as spouse of Jones-456, Anytown VR) You only need to reply once. As you make more connections, just edit your post to add your new connections.

  6. If you connect a profile which completes a connection trail either for an isolated profile or an unconnected tree, please add "Connected!" at the end of the line which made the connection. We count those connecteds towards your tally.

  7. The tally is of branches/unconnected profiles connected to the WikiTree tree, not sources or profiles added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better, and sometimes a connection will take a number of profiles to get added. Every one is different, and each one makes our tree better. So, in short, we'll count each "connected!" we see.

  8. If either or both profiles you connect did not have good sources before and were already on WikiTree, then you can also count those sources towards the Sourcerers Challenge.

  9. All participants who do not already have a Connectors Project badge, will get one. Winners each month-the person with the most connections made to the tree-will get the Connection Challenge Winner badge, and the Top Connector each month with get a spiffy template to wear on their profile page. Stats will be kept on the Connectors Challenge page, just like we do for the Sourcerers Challenge.
See last month's challenge as an example. Ask questions in the comments section here. Thank you!

Do unconnected profiles merged in to connect profiles count? If so, I've got some merge proposals that will count. They are probably going to have to go to default approval so they may not make it for July but ... inquiring minds need to know.
Yes, unconnected merged into connected count. The easiest thing to do is add the unconnected to the parent or spouse, then propose the merge. That gets the connection right away, without the wait for the merger to be completed or go to default.
FYI, Everyone, Greg Slade is closing in on 200 first degree connections. Have at it, Greg.
Number 7. Gee I woke up thins morning and I had 10 less unconnected than yesterday. I found four  that I worked on. Nobody else worked on any. Oh my! I better start searching. :o)
I need some help understanding how this works.  I connected an entire family line by adding the missing family links.  I just need to add the required sources.  But I need to know how to add them here.

I would like to try the connectors challenge this month!

Who can I talk to and figure this out?  Thanks!
Talking to me would be the first step. I assume you had a profile (call it EM) with a number of profiles connected to it but not the Tree. You found a profile (call it 3c4xEM) several generations removed from EM and added the missing links between 3c4xEM and EM. The last link (HEM) before EM is the connection and has to be a first degree connection. A first degree connection would be a child to a parent, parent to a child, or a spouse. In your answer, you could post the connection like: EM added as child (or spouse or parent) of HEM (brief description of sources used to connect EM to HEM) 18xx census, Anytown VR, "M family history" then CONNECTED. I hope this is clearer than mud. Only the final first degree connection counts for your total regardless of the number of profiles connected to EM.
Okay, that last part is what I needed to know.  I had to add a set of parents to the descendant (who is already connected to the tree) before I could connect him to the entire set of ancestors.  So only the linking father would I guess in this case count towards making the connection?  Do I have that right?  Thanks Bob!
Can I ask for advice--what would be the best method of knowing what would connect a profile?  I need a system to work with or I feel lost :-)
And does it take 24 hours for the connection at the bottom of the profile to update or does it show right away?
Easy part first. Connections do not show up immediately. It could take up to 24 hours because the system updates connections once a day, and I'm not sure of the time. On to the the harder part. Any system you use has to be flexible because of the dates you're working with, and where the person is located. FamilySearch is always a good place to start.
One more point of clarification--We are not adding to the tree unless that person connects between profiles already on the tree, right?  Our goal is to connect what is already here...?  Thanks!
YARE! (You're Absolutely Right, Emma) (Our version of Naval Aviator's YARC - You're Absolutely Rght, Commander). If it doesn't Connect to the Tree, it's not a connection. Just remember, sometimes you have to add several generations to make the First Degree Connection - parent, child, or spouse. We must have a First Degree Connection.
Let's remember, every Connection we make makes it easier for the Biography Builders. Always help our Sibling Collaborators - Bio Builders, Sourcerers, and Integrators. HOOYAH! (The Connectors Cheer). Let's hear it!

Double dipping!! Way to go, Greg. Can you get a triple with the Sourcerers?
Not in this case, everybody in the chain was already (sorta) sourced. They just weren't connected to one another.

I am going to try this again - not too successful last month but will look for ability to connect while sourcing.

Proposed a Merge of Woodcock-366 (connected) into Woodcock-588  with son Woodcock-587  (unconnected).  Did receive a note from one of the PM's and these profiles are still under research.  they ''may'' be different people.

Since I did not understand nderstand rule 5, where it says ANSWER and I only replied, SO now I did like rule 5 says and I answered. It is the same unconnected people. I just did a copy and paste. Sorry for the mistake.

No problem, Jerry. Your connections don't have to look like source info in a bio. Just so-and -so added as child/ spouse do so-and-so FAG (if has a good source), Anytown VR, "Family Genealogy", etc. CONNECTED

Keeps the line short and uses fewer characters. Also if you fill the answer, add more as a Comment to the answer.

OK...I thought I would give this a try, for something different to do in addition to Bio-building and sourcering! So I pick my ancestors common in law wife (who is  unconnected)..and add her father, and see a possible connection between her mother and someone who IS connected (but is poorly sourced) so I check his daughter, who is also poorly sourced, and find her marriage & census only to discover she has the wrong place of birth and wrong parents in tree so I'm going to HAVE to correct that....and I don't think I'll actually get around to making a connection! lol

Edit...i can see discovering wikitree is going to be a nightmare for someone like me who is data ocd...lol

Michelle,

You have just experienced a "normal" connection. Fun isn't it? Seriously, not all are like the one you described, but most do require digging. Don't be discouraged, the process will get easier the more you do connections. BTW, Welcome to the Challenge.
It's the proverbial ancestry "Tree" source and gedcom import...and I think it could be harder to connect profiles from England as there aren't as many to connect to! But I will try!
is there any way to tell if I have inadvertently connected previously unconnected profiles whilst I have been bio-building and source-sprinting??? I'm sure some profiles I was working on were unconnected, but I left them for a day to see if it takes time to propagate connections, and now I can't remember which ones were unconnected initially lol
Unfortunately making a connection doesn't show up in Changes. The best thing you can do, if you're Sourcing, is to check at the bottom of the profile first to see if it is connected. Work the connection first, then the sourcing.

OK... I think I have found one that I can connect to my tree via my son's father...so it *should* become connected....

I'm going to document this a step at a time, just in case I am confused, or am doing this wrong!

William George Cousins-1078 and wife Jackson-21353 (currently unconnected) added father of Cousins-1078  George  Cousins-1116 then added his father Thomas Cousins-1118 then added his son Thomas Cousins-1119 then linked him to his son Reginald Percy Cousins-1114 who *should* be connected as his is my son's paternal 2x great grandfather and should be connected through me (as I am connected!)

phew...

So...if William George does become connected, would that mean his wife's family (her siblings are all unconnected) should then become connected too? I'll check them out tomorrow and see if it worked.
It worked! I finally managed to connect an unconnected family branch to the tree lol Now to find the next one

2nd one William Alfred TUCKER Tucker-8694 and wife's family currently unconnected. Created father Alfred TUCKER Tucker-9210 connected to father Nicholas TUCKER Tucker-919 CONNECTED!

Think I'm getting the hang of it now lol now realise Tucker-919  probably needs merging with Tucker-8697

Good job, Michelle.

Since I just got my connectors badge today and I did connect a few notables, I'm going to post my connections for July - These were Notables.

And yes they all have sources - even if it was just a WDYTYA TV episode but that was only used when I was absolutely unable to find anything else.

1 - Annie Lennox (Lennox-295) to her father (Lennox-499) to his mother (Henderson-12005) to her father (Henderson-12006) to his mother (Fraser-4791) to her sister (Fraser-4178) - So I had to create 4 new profiles to get that connection. I have added others as well but that was the direct link to connect Annie to the Global tree. CONNECTED

2 Charles Dance (Dance-144) to his mother (Perks-125) to her mother (Gold-818) to her father (Gold-809) to his mother (Futvoye-13) to her father (Futvoye-3) - and that is another 4 profiles I created to get the direct connection - although of course I have created other profiles to add in spouses and children as well. Still working on this family. CONNECTED

NOTE - The only other notable I have connected was one who didn't have a profile at all - but I did connect her after I found 2 of her ancestors on the tree. Does she still count? I will assume she does since she HAS been connected

3 Rebecca Gibney (Gibney-94) to her mother (Way-1280) to her father  (Way-1279) to his father (Way-540). So except for the last person who was already connected, I made 3 profiles to get Rebecca attached to the tree. CONNECTED

4 Sir Peter Blake (Blake-4701) to his wife Pippa (Glanville-358) to her brother Charles (Glanville-361) to his wife Nicola (Blount-1297) to her father Walter Blount (Blount-964) who was already connected. CONNECTED

I created Peter, Pippa and Charles's Profiles, and persuaded a fellow wikitreer to make Nicola's profile so that we could attache the line at Nicola's fathers profile because he was already connected!!

This was after wasting several hours looking for Peter Blakes Ancestors and finding nothing but more isolation by going backwards. So I decide to try going through the wife. But I could not find any details about Pippa's parents. I ended up having to watch several videos on youtube about Peter Blake's Sailing exploits before someone finally mentioned Pippa's fathers name. LOL

And that's me done for July.

PS if you have teams, can you put me in the Kiwi crew (team) please. Thanks

Connectors, Yes love this idea, It would be must easier if Wiki would change its Api a little so it is much easier to down load and input  from Family search, I know of a few lines That is already Documented and sourced on Family search and go back quite a long ways and some tie into the tree, so it they would be done very quickly.

I know it's late in the month, but here is my contribution:

  1. Jasper Radford - added 1880 census as source and proved connection to his parents.  Added parents to his profile who were already connected, so he is CONNECTED!

1. I am pleased to report that I have finally shed myself of an Unconnected albatross that's been hanging around my neck for months. Back in February 2016 I created an unconnected profile for P. William Filby, whose name I had seen in innumerable Ancestry.com citations (and sometimes in other citations) as the compiler of a massive compendium of immigration records. Back in December 2016, I started to add some of his family members in hopes of getting him connected. I worked on this on and off, adding more and more of his relatives -- and researching some genealogies for people already connected in WikiTree who looked like possible connections, but turned out not to be connectable with the resources available to me (almost all of these relatives were in England). I created over 100 unconnected profiles, and along the way I added a connection from Filby to the unconnected family tree of a member who seems to be inactive.

Finally, I can report success! Here's the complete path of new profiles I created and connected to get from Percy William Filby to the existing connected profile of John Few-30:

  • Percy Filby-40 > his first wife, Nancie Elizabeth Giddens-395 (various biographies and obituaries)
  • Giddens-395 > her mother, Agnes Read Barnes-12252 (census and marriage record)
  • Barnes-12252 > her father, Joseph Read Barnes-12253 (combination of census records and his marriage and death records)
  • Barnes-12253 > his father, William Barnes-12254 (christening record, census records, and William's marriage record)
  • Barnes-12254 > his mother, Frances Few-154 (christening record, Frances' marriage record)
  • Created Frances' father, Robert Few-162 (christening records)
  • Connected Few-162 to his son John Few-30 (christening records)., who was Frances' brother. CONNECTED!! (at last).
