Need help determing date of demit from Masonic Lodge

+4 votes
I am trying to determine the date of a demit issued from a Masonic Lodge.  The document says it was issued "this second day of March in the Year of Light 58 96".

Would this be the year 1896? What is "The year of Light" ?

Anno Lucis (“in the Year of Light”) is a dating system used in Masonic ceremonial or commemorative proceedings, which is equivalent to the Gregorian year plus 4000.

So, If I subtract 4000 from 5896 I get 1896.  Then I can assume the year the demit was issued was indeed 1896.  Is that correct?

One more question if you don't mind.  When he joined the new lodge, would he not have been required to submit the demit to them? Why would he still have it in his possession?
Hi Karen,

He probably had to show it to them for inspection, but I suppose (believe?) it is his personal property. For example, what if he decided to go to yet a different Lodge? He would have had to show his demit from the first Lodge.

Note that in that profile, the sentence, "He was also a member of the John N Nance chapter of Newberry", the word "chapter" should be capitalized to "Chapter", if it is a Masonic reference. A Chapter refers to an organizational body within the York Rite, if I remember correctly.
Thanks for your help Eric.  I found that in his obit listed exactly the way you quoted it here. I'm not certain whether that was in reference to a Masonic organization or perhaps a Confederate Veterans group. He did serve under Captain John Nance in the war.

Amity Lodge and Roseboro Lodge are still active, but I've been unable to locate any other reference to this particular "chapter" thus far. Should it turn out to be Masonic, I will keep in mind the capitalization.
