Challenge of the Week: Clean-up as many merged profiles as possible [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge of the week?

This one is a reprise of one of the most popular and valuable challenges we've done so far: cleaning up messy merged-together profiles.

Aleš has prepared a report of profiles from around the tree that were merged but never had their biographies and sources consolidated. Click here for the list.

Click here for tips on how the biographies and sources section should look.

Most importantly, all profiles should have one and only one == Biography == headline and one == Sources == section with one <references /> tag directly beneath it.

After you delete the junk and consolidate any useful biographical text and sources, set the status as corrected. That will earn you a point.

The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. It's nice to cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

Thanks Emma.  I appreciate you taking time to look at it.

Hi to you both Emma and Cindi, and et al - - and Eowyn Langholf   - -

I feel we must encourage all PM's to run the '''Error Report''', before, and after they revise a profile - This will save time in the longer run, as they are at the coal-face of the profile - - - - this one Cindi was working on, shows the problem, which is still live https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Scott-19945  from the 19 Jul 2017 - I use it as the example today, because it is a common problem with gedcom imports =  ''Marriage Date'' (27December1858). '' in brackets'' = - - -

To all  members = the '''Error Report''' is a most powerful tool in Wikitree = please use it - - thanks , and cheers - john.a

John,  Thanks for your input.

That error came up as additional error on the Error Report for this merged profile challenge.  See the above link..

There was probably a different errors report that that particular error would have came up first but it should have shown up as corrected.   I may not have checked the little box when I updated the status.

thank you for your reply Cindi - -

I have had another look at the two Profiles' Changes page, and I think now we need to ask  Aleš Trtnik    the question : ? when updating the marriage details of the Spouse (spices!) does it simultaneously do so with/to the other in the error report ? - -

As the marriage details are kept in a separate file/index , I feel the the pointers to the Index are only "one way", and therefore not pointing to the second spouse ! - - - (hence 'the no update') - -

See how we go = cheers - ja

Each marriage is a single record with two persons involved. It doesn't matter, from which person you start the marriage edit. It corrects everything. Also Marriage errors are represented as a single error with 2 profiles involved.
I've been cleaning up orphaned profiles.  two questions:

1.  How can there be as many as 5 or 6 ged uploads on the same date?

2.  After all the ged uploads (same or different) then how is it this profile is now orphaned?

Thanks Aleš Trtnik  for your input - - I have cleaned some marriages today, and yes, they, the two profiles are cleaned with the one access and status change.  I have also checked Cindi's profile above and reset it to clean and Add. - - (hide to Monday) and will check it Monday p.m. (Perth)

So Cindi, you can have-a-go at the "Male" name '507' and check him out - -

Florance Shewan - -

Ales - may I claim my D/Doctor Badge now !  - - thanks john.a

Cindy C - have you a Profile to show please ? - - ? is this one ? it seems to have an early reverse merge = =

Orphaned because he removed himself = =

John, Awarded. I also invited you to google group. But we have a different thread in G2G for badges.
That profile will do, there are many like it.

Orphaning - I understand the technical aspects of how someone removes themselves and once I removed myself because I found out the adopted person was from another family of my same name.  My question is about after you do a GED upload and have 5 profiles created for this person, and maybe another profile is found and all are merged, then you edit.  Why is it that someone then decides to remove themselves from this person??  I'd like to understand more about the thinking that happens even after all this effort is put into a profile.

GED imports - most of these many merges seem to come from multiple profiles created for this person on a GED upload on the same date, occasionally there is another GED upload done by a different person on a different date as well.  Why does a GED upload create 3 or 4 or 5 profiles for this person all at once?  I have not used a GED upload myself, only corrected errors from other's profiles.  I add my own ancestors manually.

Thanks for any insights you can provide.

Cindy

If you see other things that need attention in the profile should you fix it or stick to the merge cleanup task.  I cleaned a profile that had birth and death locations in all CAPS. SO I fixed it into lowercase. Then the location finder changed it to be more specific ( you know what I mean?) and I kind of panicked that I shouldn't have done it. I left a change comment that I altered it.

Hi Kim!  Feel free to fix any errors you are comfortable correcting while you are on a profile.  Any you aren't sure about, can be left behind for the next person.

Those drops downs are very tricky aren't they?  I accidentally changed a few places I didn't mean to in the beginning.  I am learning how to work with the drop down so it doesn't give me another name in the box--it took me a lot of practice!

If you feel you made an error and don't know what it was, you can click save and then go to the "Changes" tab of the profile.  Click on the change you made.  It will show you the original and what it was changed to.

Thanks for your hard work!

I do these on my own often, but will try to set the status to join the competition.

I've been slowly working on my error report and I'm going to continue working on the ones in it that should also be on the main list. Then I'll get going on others!

Working on as many as I can.  A simple clean-up makes a world of difference.

McClure-1232 . P.S. These all newly showed up in my personal error list in the last day or two. I'm not the PM for any of them, but they are in my tree. I added sources while I was at it. Just one more merge cleanup in my personal list, then probably won't list every single one here.
Drouillard-740 ... the last one in my tree. I adopted him too, seeing as he is one of my 6th great grandfathers and was orphaned.
Julie, in this challenge, a record of your corrections is kept every time you set the status (from the status button in the error list) on an error.  You don't need to keep track here--unless you really want to :-)
I see this :) All of the above I went and dug up some sources for too, they are in my tree. I'm not going to keep up this list!

Mostly focusing on additions to my own tree this week,  But I have found a couple of 811s in my own tree (not managed by me) that are now open, and have cleaned them.  I expect I will find a few more.

You are never late until 12:00pm EDT on Sunday night.  Then you turn into a pumpkin ;-)
