Question

Do you have ancestors who immigrated to New England between 1621 and 1640?

At WikiTree, this time period is covered by the Puritan Great Migration Project (PGM), although not everyone who immigrated during the time frame was a Puritan.

There are several ways to be part of the PGM Project.

A. Acknowledge. Do you simply want to acknowledge that you have ancestors who immigrated 1621-1640? There is a template to place on your profile.  Add the following to your profile {{PGM Descendant|[[WikiTree-ID|PGM Ancestor Name]]}}. (Replace the highlighted area with your ancestor's information.)
 

B. Be Informed. Do you want to know what’s going on with the project? Are you new, but think you might want to join the project in the future? Read the Project page. Follow the tag  pgm .
 

C. Contribute Do you enjoy research? Then you might want to actively participate in the improvement of PGM profiles. As common ancestors to so many generations, these profiles often have duplicates needing merging, and some have incorrect data.  These need research,  and correction.  If this sounds like something you might be interested in, please read the Project page to find out more details.  Follow the tag  pgm , ask to join the Google Group, and request the badge by posting an answer to this question.

Chris, the fancy template {{PGM Descendant|[[Wikitree-ID|PGM Ancestor Name]]}} goes on your profile. Take a look at my profile.

I think you'll also find that most PGM ancestors already have profiles on wikitree, so before you add new ones look for the old ones.

Yes the Greenleaf's look like a good place to start. Edmund the immigrant seems to have an ok  biography, but some of his children need help and it looks like Judith's children need some help.

 A lot of Massachusetts Vital Records are online just Google the town name and vital records. There are some printed Genealogies also. I don't know whether they are specific to that Greenleaf family but you should be able to find them online and take a look

Yeah. They do need to be cleaned up. I didn't create those profiles. I just put in one of my ancestors (Evaline Fisher, I think.) and it connected the dots for me. The names were the same from my Ancestry.com search. Weird thing is how nobody bothered to fill in the Fishers because there's still a TON that need to be added.

I would like to join the Puritan Great Migration. I was adding my Terrill ancestors and came across Lewis Terrill with several pages. I am stuck at this moment.

Which Lewis Terrill is it? None of them look like Puritan Great Migration material. You can ask a question in G2G. There are people there who love to do that sort of thing. If you ask a question, make sure you add the Wikitree-ID and as much as you know.

Since you only joined two days ago, why don't you spend a little time getting to know Wikitree first, before you join PGM. I was here eight months before I joined, but definitely put the pgm  tag  on your profile.

Lewis Terrill m. Anna Babcock/I have seen Simmons as well, I am not sure at this point which is correct.  Lewis Terrill /Terrill-684 is believed to be great grand-son of Roger and Abigail Ufford Terrill. Genetically speaking I am descended from Roger Terrill.  Saying that at this point I don't have the proofs as my Mom has the sources, but never sourced her genealogy on her program thus I have  unsourced information, which I intend on sourcing the best I can. I will wait as you suggest. I have been doing genealogy for more then 30 yr and I understand sourcing, not the greatest at citation formating thought. I also hosted in the Genealogy Forum on AOL for 4 yrs. Thank you again for your consideration.

Hi Marissa, Since you've only been a member for a few days, I would suggest that you get to know Wikitree, before you join this project. Spend a few months creating profiles for your ancestors and improving some of the profiles that already exist at wikitree. I see you added the template and the pgm tag to your profile already. Good start.

I think there are more than a few of us who would need a whole free-space page to list our PGM ancestors -- not just a template. But the template could be used to link to that page.

I put the template on my page and it says I'm descended from Nathaniel Turner and more. It only links me to Nathaniel, but that's sufficient

I am elated to have found this group!  I am collecting data regarding my paternal side. I know that my ancestors arrived in MA, and migrated to VA. I am trying to authenticate that information. The last name is a Gay, and the brothers arrived here in the late 1600’s. Thank you very much!

Carrie, and we’d love to help you. Early Migration from Colonial New England to Virginia was rare. I encourage you to start a separate g2g thread from the profile you’re trying to confirm. I recognize the Gay surname and have access to sources that may help.

Anne, Jillaine et al., I would very much like to join the Puritan Great Migration project.  I think I have done all of the steps called for above.

I've been working as if I were a member, possibly helpfully, and I plan to continue finding connections, citing primary sources, correcting errors, and (hopefully) improving biographies..  And I certainly seem to have many ancestors who arrived here between 1621 and 1640.

Any particular reason 1640 is the cutoff date?  I have some ancestors, the earliest documentation  I can find is mid-1640's, but they likely arrived some time before that.

1640 is the cutoff date for the NEHGS Great Migration Project, which is the source of much of the excellent research information that the project relies on.

Explanation for others who might be confused. PGM Descendant is the name of the sticker. WikiTree-ID is the ID for your ancestor. Ancestor Name is obvious

Ah...really new... When your on your profile, just down from the top are some green and one yellow "tabs" They say things like Profile (Public View). The second one is edit. click on edit. Scroll down a little on the left hand side. You will find a good sized fairly empty box (just above it says Edit Text). Put it in there. There's a large dark colored button says SAVE CHANGES. click on that button. Then back to the "tabs" for profile - public or private view, to see what it looks like.

JT, welcome to PGM. I took a look at your profile for John Adams. You may have already learned how to do this (in the meantime), but look at the changes I made. I grouped a bunch of single <ref>Source1</ref> statements that were the same into a one <ref name=Source1>Source1</ref>. Repeat by using <ref name=Source1 />

Welcome, everyone!  The Puritan Great Migration project is special to me, and I want to put in a "plug" for AmericanAncestors.org (which is the online portal of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS)).

Without my membership in NEHGS, I would not attempt to participate in the PGM project.

A plug for the NEHGS.  Non-profit, est 1845, it supports original, peer-reviewed research, such as Robert C. Anderson's Great Migration series (and others).  In addition, it's less expensive than Ancestry and has online so many great, primary records, as well as journal articles.  A recent addition is The Great Migration Directory, which includes all individuals known to have come to New England during the Great Migration period, 1620–1640.

Probably I'm "preaching to the choir" here, but I just couldn't resist giving them a plug.  I use NEHGS every time I do research.

There are also plenty of great, free sites out there.  I love Jane Devlin's with Barbour Collection vital records, etc. and the Genealogical Gleaners Award with wonderful selections.

I suppose because I have subscriptions to NEHGS and Ancestry, I've not needed to look for free cites. Those are both Great.

I certainly agree with your assessment of NEHGS - American Ancestors.  I am  so thankful that I got a subscription from a friend for Christmas last year.  Like yourself, I wouldn't even try to work on PGM profiles without it. Prior to receiving my subscription, I was having to post on g2g and ask questions of others, which is ok, but it is so much better to be able to search myself to see if the profile I am working on should be included in the Puritan Great Migration Project on WikiTree.  oh, and thanks for the links to other great sources, especially Jane Davlin's.

Hi Teresa, Before I give you the PGM badge:

John Alden although certainly part of the Puritan Great Migration, because of his arrival on the Mayflower falls under the Mayflower Project.

John Shinn, does not qualify for the Puritan Great Migration Project either. It's limited to people who migrated to New England between 1620-1640. He would fall into the Quaker project and perhaps US History, New Jersey.

Knowing the above, Do you still want to be part of PGM?

Thank you for mentioning your ancestor, John Shinn.  I just finished reading his interesting biography and enjoyed all the photos you have inserted.  It looks like you are probably still working and plan to insert more photos.  Also, please don't forget to add inline citations, so others will know where you got your facts.  That is so important.  Thanks.

As far as adding him to the project list, here's what you may considering doing:

Start a new g2g post with a heading such as - "Is John Shinn a candidate for the Puritan Great Migration?"  Then add some of the information you have that would cause you to believe he is a candidate.  If you have access to Anderson's Great Migration Series, check to see if he is included.  If you don't have access, include that question so someone will look it up for you.  

Only ancestors who are included in Anderson's work are included in PGM.  Yours may be one of them...

I was asked to reply here if I believe I am ready to join the PGM project and that I am used to wikitree. I know I am new here but I ran my own genealogy website for 15 years and i've been a genealogist for 25. I'd like to join the group please. my pgm ancestor is gov john endicott. i'm his 11th ggrandaughter. i understand how to source, how to merge on wikitree, how to edit etc.

One of the reasons I joined WikiTree were the false links to Miles Standish I was finding at other sites. I would like to join the research in true ancestors that arrived in the Plymouth /New England area.

I would very much like to join this project. I know profiles I added a while ago need to be cleaned up, but i have been concentrating on research. Actually, I've been committed to cleaning up an ancestral morass on FamilySearch. My husband's family is documented back to the Mayflower. On my father's side his grandmother claimed to also trace back to the Mayflower; however, she was disowned by her family when she married a "poor Irishman," so sorting family records and dispelling rumors has become a passion. Regardless, there are several of her ancestors who are definitely part of the great puritan migration.

Robert Royce is my 9th GGF. I would like to help with this project. I am pre-1500 certified, have reviewed the Project Guidelines, and followed the tag, pgm.

I have noticed that citing of free-space sources on the profile of Robert Royce has been handled inconsistently. I would like my first project to be using the free-space source page's guidelines for the inline citations.

Right now I'm focusing on my info on more recent ancestors on the One Big Tree, but I'll likely be getting back to the 17th and 18th centuries in the next few months.
