Secretary and Treasurer of the Percy Society from 1841. One of the founders of the British Archaeological Association, 1843. Excavated the Roman city of Wroxeter, 1859. Awarded a Civil List pension, 1865. Author, History of Essex; Queen Elizabeth and her Times; Biographia Britannica Literaria; etc. Became mentally afflicted, 1872. Died Dec. 23, 1877, in Chelsea.
