My ggg grandfather Morgan David Morgans was murdered at sea after 1830

Question

Morgan Morgans was a blacksmith in Ohio in 1820 US census. He made a land deal in Marion Co. OH in 1830, but he seems to disappear from historical record after that. Other people have the same (unusual) Welsh name, but don't have the correct dates and places.

He was murdered on a return trip from Wales to the US sometime after 1830. I can find no record anywhere. Passenger lists have yielded nothing. Any Suggestions where else to look?

How certain are you that he was murdered at sea? Many fascinating family stories turn out to be incorrect.

Have you tried searching death records for the UK? Maybe he went over there and died before he could leave.

You might also try looking for prison or court records for someone tried or convicted of murder around the right time, then find information on their victim. Maybe the record didn't list your ancestor's full name or it was mis-indexed.

These are all very shot-in-the-dark ideas, but maybe they will help you a little.

Thanks for your recommendations. His perceived fate is all based on oral family tradition, which leaves much to be desired in the search for truth. My grandfather even told my father that he didn't need to know anything about family history -- just worry about being a good American and live for the present (the Depression). So most of our family has since scattered, and has little if any knowledge of its genealogy. I will take your advice and will search some of your suggestions. Many thanks! --James Morgans
