What is the significance of the "Skip" column?

I am confused as the the function of the skip column. Obviously I want all all the people that are not duplicates to be included in the tree when I "approve" the GED file to be uploaded. When there is a check mark in the box in the Skip column, does that mean that that person will be excluded from the uploaded GED file? And what does it mean when there in no check in the check box?

Thank you for your help.

Hi George,

From the instructions on your GedCompare Report :

  • The skip checkbox will automatically be selected for matches. This means that the person will be skipped in your GEDCOM import. On WikiTree, we only want one collaborative profile for every person.
  • When skipping a person, evaluate whether the whole family line appears to already exist on WikiTree. If so, use the multiskip selections to skip their ancestors Ancestors and/or descendants Descendants. Duplicates harm WikiTree. Review all selections carefully before you finish. Note that spouses and in-laws need to be selected separately.

I hope this helps,

Hi George,

It's just as you're assuming. See:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GEDCompare#What_does_.22Skip.22_mean.3F

There's more information you might be interested in, e.g. persons born prior 1700 are automatically skipped:

Hope you find useful this information.
