Are their any other McHugh males on this site who are in the Y-haplogoup M-253 (I1*)?

I am descended from Samuel Arthur McHugh, b. 1866 in Illinois, d. 1933 in Oakland,CA.  Parents unknown.  Family lore holds that we are related to the family of Frank C McHugh, 1930s-50s era film star for Warner Bros. Those McHughs are descended from Denis McHugh, b. 1779, Donegal, IE (possibly Killybegs or Ramelton) who immigrated to Lancaster, PA c 1798.

Tim, I have yet to do a DNA test. I was thinking this may be my next step in extending my family research. What are your recommendations? I have my McHugh relatives traced back to Michael and Mary McHugh born approx. 1765. Known children are John McHugh born 1811 and William McHugh born 1807 in Fermanagh County, Ireland. These family memebers immigrated around 1830 to Canada.Bruce McHugh

Hi, Bruce. Thanks for answering.  The most cost effective DNA test for overall genetic relative detection is the one offered by 23andMe currently @ $99.  This will give you the general "y" and "mTdna" (mitochondrial-maternal) haplotypes and will plug you into a large pool in which to detect autosomal DNA cousins (these are the majority of one's genetic cousins beyond just those who share a common paternal or maternal line).  To explore your patenal line-the McHugh line- the better commercial company is Family Tree DNA.  They are quite a bit more expensive (~$189 for a 67 STR marker test, which is the best for confirming patenal relationship within a few generations). The other option I is the Geno 2.0 project through National Geographic.  This is a $199 test  that explores deep ancestry and compares more DNA markers than all the others.  It doesn't have the tools, however, for finding recent relatives.

Take a look at these, and if you decide to try one, let me know.  We can compare genetics to see if we are on the same McHugh track.  My paper trail ends with my ggrandfather born in 1866 in Chicago.  There is a family legend linking us to Frank McHugh, whose family immigrated to Pennsylvania c 1798 from Donegal.
