It depends,  where you are from, it also depends the time period.  I would try to find the Marriage record, on Some Marriage records they requird the names of the Parents, I also would look for the Divorce Record, in some place the did the same, Farther more you could also find information on the other child and the birth and marriage records, because it would have names on them also. Death Records also would have these things too.  Those are the Common Records for stuff, if you don't find it there than you will have to look even harder, but I would start their. Good luck I hope the best.
Thankyou for your reply, I have only basic info, but my father may be still alive, his name is Gilbert John McNaughton. Born around 1929 to 1934 thanks Gay

Search for you father's birth registration. That should show the names of his parents.

Thankyou, yes this is him, BDM,  only goes to 1917, he was born after this, and I cant get access, to his birth records, thanks anyway. GAY
I ran a Google Search and got an Ancestry.com search results page with a bunch of electoral roll index entries, all from Australia Electoral Rolls, 1850s. In addition to the entries that Doug found (but Doug found more details than I can see on Ancestry), they had Gilbert John McNaughton in West Sydney in 1963 and 1968. Also, there are entries for a Mark Gilbert McNaughton (a family member?) in both Parramata and Prospect, NSW, in 1977 and in Parramatta in 1980.
Is it possible that your father was born in England? There are some UK Electoral Roll results for a John Gilbert McNaughton (could this be his father?) in London in 1929, 1930, 1932, and 1933.
Sorry I missed this reply he could have been born there I will try and see if I can find this info for myself thanks for your help.
