Espanya vs. España - Is it an error to give country names in other languages

Recently a data doctor modified the birth location of Pablo Casals from "El Vendrell, Tarragona, Catalunya, Espanya" to "El Vendrell, Tarragona, Catalunya, Spain". I'm assuming this must have been an error 608: Misspelled country in birth location.

Should it be an error to use the Catalan spelling "Espanya" for locations in Catalonia?

Hi Karen,

Based on Wikidata (At the bottom of the page), Espanya is a correct spelling in 9 different languages. Consequently this spelling shoud not be considered an error.

There are 20 profiles (Click on the button "Check spelling variations") with this Birth / Death / Marriage location.

This error can be safely marked "false error".

Thanks, Rubén! I'd rather we added Espanya as a valid country so that we don't have to educate data doctors about marking this as a false error.
You could send a message to Aleš letting him know in case he doesn't see this post or if you are in the Data Doctor Project, you could post in the Google group.

Thank you Rubén for your expert knowledge :-)

Thank you for your so generous words, Emma !

I'm closer to be a novice than to be an expert.

As you say Karen, the best solution is to add Espanya as a valid country, it would also prevent new profiles added were flagged with the error.

Portuguese spelling for Spain is Espanha, listed "pt" on Wikidata Spain page.

There are 10 profiles using this spelling, all of them are flagged with a "Misspelled country" error. e.g.:

I don't know if we could overwhelm Aleš with this kind of requests.

Glad you brought this up. I learn something new every day .

I'm by no means an expert so please don't take my answer as policy, but I feel like, if the word is fairly obvious, it should be ok.

Living in Spain, albeit south, Espanya is the correct identity for the location of Tarrogona, in the Catalan language.

Edit the profile and enter Terragona as place of birth. ---  result: Espanya

I'm confused - isn't it spelled "Tarragona"?

Not in Catalunya, Even the street signs are now in Catalan.
