Roll call for Kiwis - Lets see how many Kiwis are active here at Wikitree.

I had someone make a suggestion for a roll call of Kiwis who are active here in wikitree. and if you like taking part in some of the challenges as well - maybe that is something we could do as a team.

Please refer to the below G2G post for details.

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/432441/did-you-lead-team-for-one-the-thons-keep-the-team-spirit-going?show=432642#a432642

But first, for the roll call, It would be great if you can write down, just how you discovered wikitree and why you joined.

I dont remember how I found wikitree. Probably on a Google search. But I do know that the person of the week, the very first person I saw when I got to the main page was the well known NZ Heart Surgeon Sir Brian Barret-Boys (Boyes-373) - and I was instantly hooked. Why? Because Sir Brian had married my fathers cousin way back before he became famous. And the information about his wife was very sparse. I just had to join in order to connect me with her and then correct all her details. Her name is still spelled wrong, but I think it's too much of a hassle to change it.

Are there any other Kiwis out there?

I had an active kiwi (more at half of one as I recall) in my refrigerator awhile back.  It apparently had it's view blocked by some leftovers.  It got thirteened!  :D
Thanks Robynne for starting this thread - great idea.   I've changed Norma Margaret's LNAB  to Thompson by the way.
Vincent, true Kiwis know that an active kiwi would peck holes in your fridge with its beak. Real Kiwis make a distinction between kiwi and kiwifruit!
Thank you so much Maria!!
Speaking of Kiwifruit, are any of you guys old enough to remember the old name for kiwifruit? The name that I grew up with. Or am I dating (Aging) myself?? LOL
I'm ancient too - Chinese gooseberries! And you'll remember tree tomatoes....aka tamarillos.
Actually I dont recall ever using the name Tree Tomatoes. i think I always called them Tamarillos.
I think I should make up a Kiwi team page - for others to see - but that can wait for now. I want to finish the family I am working on, so that it will count for the July connectors challenge...
The tamarillo name was chosen in 1967. They're not my favourite fruit though we had them for "pudding" in the 1960s. I'll join your Kiwi team for challenges if you set it up. I may need some help to access the things that need fixing and I may not take part in all challenges.
Well that date makes sense. I was born in 1964 and I dont have any memories before 1969, so Tamarillos it is!!

I remember having Tamarillos and Vanilla ice cream for dessert (pudding) and mixing them up so the ice cream went pink!!

Thanks Fiona. Have added you to the list. As I said somewhere in this thread, I will make up a Kiwi team page, but just not right now.
I'm new here and I think found Wikitree through a Google search when I was looking up a particular surname. Got hooked and am having fun finding out about various branches of the family. Lots to learn, especially about sources. I just got back from clearing out my mother in law's house. I found a treasure trove of family records so will have plenty to keep me busy!

I know I'm way behind, but I like the name Kiwi Crew. It has a nice ring to it.

I probably found wikitree on a Google search too, Robynne. I have bits of a tree on a couple of other places and I added my gggrandfather to his first wife here. It caused a bit of a furore as the profile manager was unaware of the NZ connection! After profuse apologies from me, the other profile manager "taught" me how to use it and we found an amazing source that very clearly shows the connection.

I tend not to do the challenges but fix things up as I see them. I might be convinced to join a team.

You need to tag this post new_zealand as otherwise no one will see it.

Thanks Fiona. I had tried that but it didnt work, But now I see that I put it on the wrong line. It's not a wiki ID.  But its added now.

Wikitree discovery: Dr Google/ Google (Re)search

Why:  Had a rapidly growing gedcom file compiled from information from both grandparents, the knowledge some information was factually incorrect and the whispers of royalty connections

Welcome Richard.

For royalty connections, I have a 3rd cousin who is a 6th cousin to the former Lady Diana Spencer. I have no direct blood connection, but because of this 3rd cousins connection, I am now less than 20 degrees away from the Queen. I used to be 30 degrees!!  LOL

But what I am more interested is your Fulton Hogan connection. I have an uncle, (now retired) who worked for Fulton Hogan for many many years and then spent a good number of his retirement years on the Board of Directors.
That was also a surprise to me when I found out! Furthermore, two of his grand uncles who were railway engineers responsible for the construction of the North Island's railway system.

No, I haven't had any association with FH's Board of Directors

Going back to royalty for a moment - I am one of those who isn't concerned about their connection to HRH QE II. Slightly more interested with the varying peerages.

Anyway - I'm unsure whether to create a Free Space Profile for Fulton Hogan or just to create a subcategory within the New Zealand Project framework...As it is - I'm gradually adding to our NZ categories where and when appropriate
No contact with the FH/BOD - OK thanks.

I'm adding NZ profiles whenever I can but am not so sure about the categories. I have only been here for 7 months.
Not a problem.

Yes, I can definitely relate to that - I was like that when I started out on here last year

Been on here probably about two years now. Most likely found it on a google search as was looking for a free genealogy  website. Been involved in Genealogy since I received a Book done by a cousin on one branch of the family. Then received two *GED files on another branch and another family book so only had to do searching on one branch.

I still need to add that first books facts and sources on here as have been tidying up the *ged files and adding branches to the family I already have entered. When I get tired of that I work out in the Data errors projects and the Sourcerers Project and also work on merges.

Robynne,

Being from a colony gives us an interest in ancestry because we all have the  natural target of going back to our founding fathers. For me, 14 of my 16 gr.gr.grandparents were early pioneers (born overseas and emigrated to NZ in the 19th C.) so I have many.

I started with MyHeritage (shudder) and Geni (not sooo bad) before learning enough to realise that Wikitree was the tool for me. Fortunately the Gedcom import made it easy to copy over all my previous hard work so I am a reluctant supporter of Gedcoms, although others will truthfully tell you that they cause many of the problems on Wikitree.

Of course you could just cheat and see who is in the New Zealand Project [[https://www.wikitree.com/genealogists/NEW_ZEALAND]]

Not sure how I found Wikitree - but when I did I knew it was the right place to add and expand the profiles I had aquired over the years.

I have been here just over two years - and now spend most of my 'spare' hours either as: a Data Doctor as part of the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Database_Errors Team - focused on profiles related to New Zealand

I'm 8th generation kiwi !!

5 x Great grandfather Rev. Thomas Kendall was the first ancestor to arrive in New Zealand in 1814. and my grand father Bill Braddock was the last who arrived in 1930. See my Ancestors who migrated to New Zealand chart on my profile

I've researched all my ancestor out of New Zealand.

I would love to be part of the New Zealand team, as for the last two thons I was in team Australia :-(

When I first searched for an ancestor on Google search, I found WikiTree, and never looked away. I was 15.

I'm here, but I don't tend to join in challengers.

I am from the Derecourt, LIvingstone and Whitehouse names.

I am now about to start a Team Page for the Kiwis Challenge team. Do you guys have any idea what we should call ourselves.

I did think we could be called - Godzone Kiwis - but I dont want to offend anyones religious beliefs. BUT - we do come from Godzone country, dont we.

But if you can think of any other phrase that preferably uses the word Kiwi or Kiwis - because that is how we see ourselves - isnt it.

I will be using the NZ flag as a background to the logo pic - especially since the NZ people voted rather decisively to keep the NZ flag and not change it. The blank space under the union jack has room for a logo.

You can live anywhere in the world, as long as you support Kiwi genealogy and are willing to source, connect, write bios for, fix up data errors etc etc for NZ profiles!!! That will be where we will concentrate our efforts - getting Kiwi profiles connected back to the main tree.

Please respond on this thread ASAP.

I would like to get a page up ready for August. We dont have to join all the challenges. Just the ones we want to - and maybe the Thons if they come up.
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Sorry don't like godzone kiwi,

You posted this very early
OK - So NO Godzone

Do you have any other suggestions

If everyone could make a suggestion for a team name - that would be great.

I wanted to give everyone time to see this and respond

It gives us 3 days to come up with a name - its called being DEMOCRATIC!!  LOL

Not that we will join in any challenge that shows up in August, but we dont know when the next Thon may show up.
Kiwi's Down-under.

This name sounds good, and when the leaders mention it on the live streams, the name will sound kiwi as.
The Australians are called Thunder Down Under, though. I wondered about Kiwi Crew? Kiwi Connectors/ Connection? Even Team New Zealand (yes, I know that's not original).
I like The Kiwi Crew.

The alliteration sound is nice!!  I think alliteration is the right word!! LOL

We are the Kiwi Crew!!  It sounds really good to me.

Team NZ has been done so often before. But noone has a team name that uses Kiwi which is why I'd like to use that.

So what do you guys think?

Are we The Kiwi Crew?

Thanks for your ideas Fiona.
Sorry Campbell - didnt see your reply

Kiwis Down Under

That one sounds good too.

Kiwi Crew or Kiwi Squad

Crewa group of people who work on and operate a ship, aircraft, etc.

Squada small group of people having a particular task.

Robynne Lozier, I like your thinking, we're not going to use Kiwi's Down Under if Aussies are using Thunder Down Under. did you know that that name is very similar to the copy righted Group name "Thunder from Down Under" Copyright ©2015 Australia's Thunder From Down Under, a SPI Entertainment company, LOL

Aussies, ay! I liked your "Kiwi As", Campbell, but didn't think the rest of the world would get it. I think "Kiwi Crew" is more memorable than "Kiwi Squad". "Crew" suggests working together and also links to our maritime roots.

got it - NO Kiwis Down Under.

We dont want to run foul of the copyright police :)

So it looks like the choice is between Kiwi Crew and Kiwi Squad.

Kiwi Crew sounds nicer and runs off the tongue more smoothly.

I vote Kiwi Crew as the New Team Name, thanks Fiona Gilliver, I agree with the maritime roots meaning. Now we need others to vote if they like the name.

Try get the WikiTree leaders to say the Māori Name in the LiveCast; Tokoeka Uepū

Forgive me if I mangle this - To-ko-e-ka  way-pu?

Doesn't sound too bad to me.

What is the Maori name for the kiwi bird?
Do we really have to wait to get others votes for the name?

All three of us like Kiwi Crew, so I vote we just go with that.

What can we use for a logo? A kiwi wearing either a hard hat or a sailors hat or a navy officers cap.

Campbell, can you make that up or any other idea that indicates or implies a Kiwi crew? I get the impression that your graphics skills are quite good. Mine are very amateurish.

Fiona, well done on choosing a great name!!

Thanks Guys.
OK I have created a Kiwi Crew Free Space page - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:The_Kiwi_Crew

It is pretty basic right now, but as soon as someone shows me how to do a table, I can start adding names.

And if Campbell can be a dear and make a kiwi logo, I can add that as well.

I have also started a new Post on G2G - https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/434849/new-zealand-team-for-challenges-and-source-thon-now-running
Yep, I'll make a logo. I'm thinking of a happy kiwi bird wearing a white/black Navy hat, holding a book and magnify glass.

Can I design the free space page? I'm good at that. I can also create the table, what do you want on the table? Name ranks.
Wow Campbell you are up early!!

Space Page is up already, but feel free to add a background (I have NO idea how to do that), and anything else.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:The_Kiwi_Crew

Most of what I have added is text. Please dont remove it, but if you can make it more readable, that would be great.

By all means dump the NZ flag I used and make a logo that will encompass The kiwi crew!!

Table - lets see - Name (linked to profile of course), source-a-thon number - (I beleive that everyone will get one) and perhaps the area in which they specialise - some people only do data doctoring, others do sourcing, I do connections etc etc.. as long as we try and do mostly NZ profiles. See further back up this Roll call thread for those details.

Hope that helps.

I'm a kiwi. Just starting my family tree since easter weekend when records were free on Ancestry. I found out so much about my family! And we found out about children we didn't  know about, etc. I was a member of Wikitree before that as I had searched for "free family tree". I quickly found i couldn't do much without sources so i joined Ancestry & have been slowly transferring the data. I'm in Taranaki - where the hardcore things are.

I have been doing genealogy for many years but I only found Wikitree 7 months ago.

I love this community and I have been having so much fun putting my tree online and also finding notables and helping to get them connected as well.

I just connected up Sir Peter Blakes profile today - although he wont actually be connected until the update happens tomorrow morning Eastern daylight time - about 12 hours from now.

I’m a Kiwi living in Aus. I first found out about Wikitree several years ago in a blog post if I remember correctly. I joined last year as a guest and have only just become a volunteer member. I love Wikitree’s strong focus on using sources. I haven't taken part in any challenges yet.

I am also a Kiwi. I have spent most of my life in America, but still a kiwi. I have not been real active on wikitree, but I will be doing more since I just did my DNA. Looking for information on how to get more history on the Adeane side of my family.

There are probably a few more active kiwis that don't frequent G2G as much ....
I know I have been busy on profiles so haven't checked G2G for a week.
But yes I participated in the July Sourcerers challenge.

I found out about WikiTree when planning for a Reunion and actively looking for a place to put our research to make it the most widely accessible for family without needing to cost.

I'm half Aussie but find working on NZ profiles a lot easier.
