Add a Category overview link on Categories

New Template available {{Space:Category}} to easier use the new category-navigator

I created {{Space:Category}} just add it to a Category page and you get a link..... see example Categories

If you have done your homework and have an Infobox on all your categories in your projects explaining that this category is part of project xxx and contact person yyyy

Then you just need to add {{Space:Category}} to the Infobox.... and it will be on all Categories in the project....

Ex.

How it looks on Category:Norra_Skrävlinge_(M)

As Category:Norra_Skrävlinge_(M) use

When you display the category structure use the icons to navigate futher see below

That's pretty great. Can you take the "The" out of the link to Category Structure? It's redundant. Right now it says "display the The."  I'm having timeout issues when I try to navigate the structure but it may just be on my end.

Thanks Mission completed  (its cached so some pages will still have double the for some more minutes....)

>> I'm having timeout issues when I try to navigate the structure but it may just be on my end

Which Category?

It is in Ales software the timeout is created....mayb change the URL to use fewer levels and see if that helps.... then click the icons to traverse futher levels see picture

Thanks. That's useful.

I guess Aleš is working on something better.... but this was a 2 minutes solution.....

Best would be to also add Navigation Templates to get even better structures

Example

I mean, of course, that this is a useful thing to have on a parish category page. I have said it before that I find most of the stuff that you have put there by template to be better suited to a space page. But please, don't do anything quick and drastic.

I notice you commented it out on the Rättvik page; I commented out a bit less on the Skinnskatteberg page. I need to be allowed to think a lot more slowly. I finally dug down through your templates to read them, and discovered that the parish number for Skinnskatteberg in the parameter for Fornsök was "simply" wrong, and I could replace it with the correct number. And here I had been thinking for more than a year that there was a bug at Fornsök that made the link go to a default place.

>> Skinnskatteberg in the parameter for Fornsök was "simply" wrong

Cool !!!!

  1. There are two "bugs" in the connection with Fornsök
    1. If there exists no remainings registered in the parish we have a problem searching using the "sockenkod" (today it just in Umeå somewhere we have this problem)
    2. I have told the developer at Fornsök to have an option so we can see the parish border direct (without inställningar/socken) but they don't listen to me ;-(
      1. Just displaying parish borders is a pain.... Fornsök is good but not excellent and today my understanding is that no one feels they should do a good solution.... The Swedish genealogy software Genney I think had something nice

The socken kod is in Wikidata so my maybe project is to create the whole structure for parishes with the links like Bygdeband etc. in Wikidata see blog. Doing this linked data approach I feel is a bigger thing than when the WEB was invented by Tim Berners Lee (video) and searching will be much easier

>> But please, don't do anything quick and drastic

I do nothing nearly at WikItree I am not a big friend of the development model... saying that things should be discussed in G2G.... no it feels like Aleš has found a "snabbspår" how to get things done = Do it yourself on your own server..... ;-) My "own server" is Wikidata ;-)

This template was just a reaction that people get lost with todays structures and user interface..... and as said I guess Aleš will do something better... examples of UI patterns for navigation I guess

Jumping in hierarchy

I am not really fan of third party solutions, because you alvays get to the point where something can't be done.

I like my solution for now. I will try to precalculate the numbers, so there will be no limit on the size.

Yesterday daily dumps of categories was set up. I am working on automated update, and then I will suggest to Chris to add a link to Category Navigator on all category pages.

I might also extend parent categories on the navigator.

>> I am not really fan of third party solutions

If you reference my links it was just Design pattern....

I like your current solution that opens up a new page it feels excellent

  1. you get a good overview
  2. you can see number of subcategories
  3. you can see number of profiles
  4. you can click on an icon and get more categories

As I use it mostly for Swedish categories and know most of it by heart.... maybe having some kind of description text to explain... even though the parent categories explain a little....

E.g.

  1. add to every category (in the Infobox) a description
  2. in the overview have a mouse over when the text pop ups

Example b elow Skinnskatteberg (U) on mouse over text displayed
Parish in Västmanland, Sweden

As I guess most people don't understand what category Skinnskatteberg (U) is about

Where would I geet that popup text?

Probbably from category info boxx template. I am preparing one. For now it was discussed in categorisation project. You can get the preview here

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:CategoryInfoBox

>> You can get the preview here

I like having WikidataID ==> you can rename categories etc.... and still find the related....

>> Feedback Cemetery

For me having a cemetery category is to

  1. gather people ==> we could help other people taking grave pictures as they do at FindAGrave
  2. but also have contact information about the cemetery
    1. where do I find a register?
      1. ex. Category:Norra_begravningsplatsen has register at
        1. http://www.svenskagravar.se/
        2. hittagraven...
          1. has coordinates of graves
        3. norrabegravningsplatsen.se
          1. has photos of a lot of gravestones

I like the links to FindAGrave (They have a Cemetery ID P2025 (list) maybe it could be prepopulated...

In Sweden neither FindAgrave or WIkidata is a good source.... a quick search in Wikidata says 444 cemeteries has findagravecemeteryID and coordinates see map

Big pic USA cemeteries in Wikidata with coordinates and FindAGraveCemeteryID

Centralno_pokopališče_Žale

Also on a cemetery category it is nice to get information if there is some apps available

Is it posible to add a timeout to the template?

Some categories of interest are known to take longer than the default timeout.

For instance, if I put the template {{Space:Category}} on [[Category:Johnson County, Indiana, Cemeteries]], it produces this link, which comes back in 0.05s with all entries.

But if I put the template {{Space:Category}} on [[Category:Indiana Cemeteries]], it produces this link, which times out half way thru Porter County Randolph County.  (Actually, it gets a little further each time I run it.)

Of course, there are a few self-references that I need to clean up.

The template is just a Simple substitution all the magic timeouts etc. is in Aleš code see his comment

  1. The template is just doing
    1. Reads the name of the Category
    2. Creates a URL
Hope Chris listen and change WIkitree to have it on all Category pages....
Category Navigator is still being developed. All the numbers shown are being calculated on the fly, I will precalculate all of them and there will be no Timeouts after that.
Now it is optimized to work much faster. It renders complete page in 1.3 sec

Cool!!!! feels faster.....

A maybe request.... One "irritating" thing is that sorting is done the US American way ==> in Sweden we always have ÅÄÖ at the end of the alphabet

If you check

  • Category=Socknar,_Sverige&Levels=1
  • When I did C# programming you could have different sorting.... if we set in the Infobox a language identifier ==> that the subcategories should be sorted following that category..... (if it's not used today maybe in the future....)
    • lang=sv-SE ==> that sorting should follow sv = Swedish standard in Sweden

Link

My software supports Slovenian sort order. I can't really change that.

Ok minimize/collapse I start feeling make sense since we now display so many categories...... if you would like to compare two branches and just would like to see them expanded...

Another thing maybe

Get an indication in the report or as an database error that a category is missing Template ProjectCategory (or the new Infobox)

I have on e.g. Category:Rättvik (W)

  1. {{Space:SPC-W}}
    that includes
    1. {{Space:SPC_Header}}
      that includes
      1. {{ProjectCategory}}

but Category:Tina,_Rättvik_(W) doesn't have it ==> an user finding this category get no project information.....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Template {{ProjectCategory}} tells project managing the Category e.g.

This category is managed by the 1776 Project in association with the Categorization Project. For assistance with this or related categories ask in G2G making sure to tag your question with both CATEGORIZATION and 1776.

>> if you would like to compare two branches and just would like to see them expanded...

Open two tabs.

I might do that in the future. CategoryInfoBox is still in early development. I will also try to put it automatically on all categories or at least on all subcategories.

or three tabs.... ;-)

Even if Chris get upset when he hear the word template I think it's good to also think how life will be in WikiTree 2.0 when more structured data is used ==> What database model is best used for a Category..... a cemetery, a location, an occupation

  • maybe have language (for sorting and matching default en ==> most doesn't need it)
  • region a category is valid in etc...
  • time period
  • as you suggested corresponding wikidata object and/or FindAGraveCemetery ID
    • For Swedish Parishes and Danish Parishes there are unique ID/parameters..... identifýing them.....
  • Categories get fast crazy complex just check Indiana cemeteries is 953 categories without structure it's a chaos
    • as said earlier I think how to contact the administration of a cemetery to get more data and/or find online registers,,,, a local contact person you can ask question would be cool....

Last year on WIkipedia I used the tool harvesttemplates populating Wikidata from template values.... when starting working with the Swedish National Bibliography  P3217 and I populated it from Swedish Wikipeida template SBL it was a good start.... I did the same with Swedish Parishes and took Swedish Parish code from the Infobox ==> now we get a nice map with the parish codes just by a simple search in Wikidata

Excellent use is to put {(Space:Category}} on your personal categories

Example Category:Sälgö-1 you get list
