Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

If anyone wants to join a New Zealand team for Challenges and Source-a-Thons, I have just created a new Team for Kiwis.

We call ourselves the Kiwi crew and the page is here. It's pretty basic right now, but it can be added to and expanded.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:The_Kiwi_Crew

My name is Robynne Lozier and while I was born and raised in New Zealand, I currently live in Canada. But I have plenty of NZ Ancestry!!

As soon as someone can show me how to make a table, I can add names of Kiwis who may be interested. Otherwise I can only do a list of names.

Wikitree is offficially doing the Source-a-thon in October

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Source-a-Thon

Please reply to this thread if you want to join the NZ team.

Thank you.

OMG - we now have a KIWI logo!!

THANK YOU CAMPBELL!!!

Great image, Campbell!
Six hours to complete, well worth it with this response, thanks Robynne and Fiona
Yes, Campbell. What a great logo for the Kiwis. Well done!
Hi Robynne, I'm in the US, but still a Cantabrian for most of my life. I'll give it a go.

How will the challenges differ from wider challenges?
If I am Sourcering will that mean I will need to track progress on each Sourcerer challenge or split my work into NZ profiles and other profiles? Or will a NZ source-a-thon be a subset of the global one?
by Lianne Trevarthen G2G6 Mach 4 (46.7k points)
I would be happy to join. How many on your list so far Robynne? I am thinking there should be an "Inaugural" challenge for August...but it may be too late to set one up?
You will need to track and keep a record of those profiles you have sourced - but just during the sprints or the thons, however long they last. Any other time, you can just source and not keep any records if you dont wish to.

You wont need to split into NZ and non-NZ, but if you could work more on NZ profiles, that would be good.

I believe the next big Source-a-thon is due for October according to the below page

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Source-a-Thon#Official_Rules.2C_Terms_and_Conditions

There are 3 official members (me, Campbell Braddock and Fiona Gilliver) and 2 other possible members - who mentioned that they were interested in joining but have not actually gotten back to me to say yes or no.

So you would make number 4.

This will be a part of the larger source-a-thon. The plan is that we work on NZ profiles as much as possible and there are a TON of unsourced NZ profiles according to the lists.

So far this is what I understand how things will work. I will add your name to the list - which can be seen on the Kiwi Crew Space page listed above. Thank you for joining.

I am new at this, Challenges and Thons, so if anyone needs to correct my details or information, if they could tell me first, so that I can change to the right information.

Thanks.
Lianne,

There are sourcing sprints done on the weekends, so if you want to participate in one of those for practice, that's fine.

I think I might do that as well.

Robynne
Unfortunately weekends, particularly Saturdays, are not the best times for me to participate. But that doesn't mean I don't do any. I usually just source silently!  I have updated a number of profiles as unsourced that have gedcom only and quite a few had  no parents or had no dates and places so they have been marked for further research.
That's OK. I see you have joined the August Sourcerers challenge, as have I. I think maybe doing this for a month at a slower pace suits me better than going fast and maybe making more errors. LOL

I feel it is appropriate that I stick my hand into this pie to considering the number of Unsourced Profiles I have which belong in that category

Thank you for joining Richard and welcome to the Kiwi Crew!!!

Hi Robynne

chuck me in the mix - i probably tag a few hundred 'Unsourced/ new zealand' profiles a month so i might as well try to clear a few now and then :-)
by Graeme Olney G2G6 Pilot (143k points)
Thanks Graeme - welcome to the Kiwi crew!!
Graeme, thank you so much for the Silver Fern Background!!!!

I am in. Already see my name is on the team list. I mostly work Database errors and Do a raid on the unsourced lists every so often starting at a letter and doing every profile i can. Did get the As down to one profile at one stage.
by Darren Kellett G2G6 Pilot (430k points)
Thanks Darren and welcome to the Kiwi Crew!!
Apparently you can blame Graeme Olney for the never ending list of NZ unsourced profiles!!  LOL

It's Okay. The way I see it without Graeme Olney finding and tagging the profiles they will stay unsourced and not noticed. Him doing the tagging brings it to the attention of people who want to find sources and gives a chance for people to make Wikitree better.

Congratulations on forming your Team, Robynne. Looking forward to going head-to-head with you during the next Team Challenge. The more, the merrier, and the better WT gets. Best wishes. Bob

I'd be happy to join. I've do the Saturday Sourcerer's challenge now and then, whittling away at the NZ unsourced category that Graeme keeps adding to.

LOL  Thanks for the giggles, Paula!!

and Welcome to the Kiwi Crew!!

If any of you participate in the Saturday Sourcing Sprints, let me know you're on the team so I can update the tracking table.
by Debi Hoag G2G6 Pilot (396k points)
Thanks Debi!!

OK Guys - Did you hear that?

Let Debi know that you are now part of the Kiwi Crew if you do any of the Saturday Sourcing sprints, from now on!!
For the record - THIS Is the Tracking Page that Debi Manages!!

Just so you know, as team captain, it behooves me to practise what I preach... LOL So I have joined the August Sourcerers challenge - for the entire month!!

I managed to clear most of the letter E today in the NZ unsourced profiles!!

Below is the official post for this months Sourcerers challenge

I have been working on Nagel profiles...sourcing and improving bios. And also working on my Cemeteries. Hopefully I will finish the Alexandra Redoubt Cemetery this month. It is in Tuakau. I photographed all the graves last weekend. Most of them are not yet in WikiTree but a few are so have been able to improve the profiles.

I would like to join in as I have contributed to the unsourced profiles. Probably more UK than NZ but at least I can help redress the balance. Won't be able to do much at weekends but will plug away. I do have some NZ CDROMs and the following books if anyone wants look ups.

NZ burial locator, NZ Early Settlers loctor, Early Wellington Settlers, NZ WW1 service personnel and Reserves Index, Electoral Roll 1893, 1911

Nelson Notables 1840 -1940 by Max Lash

Nelson a regional history by Jim McAloon

Eureka 1874 -1984

Waikite Valley school and district 50 years

Rowling reunion 50 years

The Palmer connection vol 1 and 2

Pioneers from over the sea, Cross family memories of Early Nelson

Chronicle of the James Climo family

Mabiginogi an Clem, The story of the chldren of Clem (Climo)
by
Allana,

I'm sorry but I cant add you to the crew until you join Wikitree, create a profile and probably sign the Honor code.

Is your book on Waikite Valley, referring to the township just outside of Rotorua or another one? My sister works in Waikite Valley near Rotorua.

Cheers

Robynne
Sorry wasn't logged in at the time. It is the one outside Rotorua.
Waikite valley near Rotorua. Cool. My sister might be interested on trying to get a copy of that book.

OK Allana, Is it ok that we identify you as Allana? Because you appear to want to be anonymous on your profile.

I will arrange for Campbell to add you to the Crew Page, as soon as I can get a hold of him.
My daughter lives in Waikite so it should be possible to organize something.

I have inadvertently stepped on some toes so this will be one way of making amends.

Hi, I would like to join the Kiwi crew team for this years Source-a-Thon. I joined in on the Sourcerers Challenge this month, my first challenge, and added sources for about 150 profiles for one NZ family that was unsourced. A drop in the ocean I know. I see there are plenty more to do.

How will it work? Will we each be assigned a group of profiles so we don't double up?

by Charlene Newport G2G6 Mach 2 (22.2k points)

Welcome to the Team!!

Here are last years source-a-thon Tutorial to help you.

I know that you source the Profiles, but what else do you Specialize In? (choose from list below) You don't have to choose.

  • Biographies

  • Errors

  • Cemeteries

  • Connectors

Thank you.

I see it works just the same as the monthly Sourcerers Challenge.

I don't really specialise in anything in particular. I tidy up gedcom imports, source profiles and fix errors. I'm not good at writing original biographies. Sourcing is definitely my strongest area.

Welcome to the team, Charlene,

I was thinking that we can each choose a letter of the alphabet in the NZ UNSOURCED Profiles section, and do as many as we can for that letter. Some letters have short lists and others have Looooong lists  LOL

Choosing a letter is a good idea. Looking forward to joining in on this year's Source-a-Thon :)

I think picking a letter is good, but I also find it easier (and more satisfying) to source profiles that are in locations where I can view the cemetery. Then I can contribute more than sourcing, and further the cemeteries project. That isn't always possible, but being familiar with the names in the area helps with future connections.

Maybe others in the group could let me know if they sourced someone in my region, so that I can add them to my list of cemetery research and add to the profiles later.
The NZ Unsourced Profiles list is not divided up into geographical areas, so it's kind of hit or miss if you get someone from your area.

That list is alphabetical which is why I mentioned it.

Since the BDM DIA Database also makes no mention of where people were born, married or died, then the location is not terribly important to me.

Please add me to the New Zealand list. My home area is Canterbury but will travel anywhere
by Jean Price G2G6 Mach 5 (53.1k points)

Welcome to the Team!!

I grew up in Glenavy, South Canterbury :-), but now live in North Otago

What do you Specialize In? (choose from list below)

  • Biographies

  • Errors

  • Sources

  • Cemeteries

  • Connectors

Welcome to the Team Jean.
Errors, Sources, and Cemeteries are my favourites
Thanks Jean, I will add that to the table.
Good for you Jean. I enjoy cemeteries and sourcing too.

The 2017 Source-a-thon is due to start in 2 weeks time - on Saturday 30, September to Monday 2 October.

New Zealand is a small country and often gets lumped in with the Aussies.

This year I decided to give the Kiwis their own identity and we are now a separate team. The Kiwi Crew will be flying their own flag and logo during the source-a-thon of 2016! Go Kiwi Crew!!

So if anyone out there in wikitree-land wants to help support New Zealand profiles that have no sources at all, please register at the registration thread (below) and state that you want to be on the Kiwi Crew team.

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/462656/will-you-participate-the-source-thon-current-registrations

We currently have 15 active participants and have room for more. Below is our Team Page.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:The_Kiwi_Crew

Thank you.

Robynne Lozier

Team Captain.

Hi

I would love to join "The_Kiwi_Crew". I am just a 'newbie' here at WikiTree, and still trying to acquaint myself with all the protocol's etc. I am especially keen to participate in Source-a-thon 2017.
by Neil McNicol G2G6 (9.9k points)
Done!!

Neil could you please check the gender on your profile. You are showing up as a female, and I dont know if I did something wrong when I created your link on the team page, or if it is from your profile.

Thanks.

Robynne Lozier

Captain of the Kiwi Crew!!!

Robynne

My profile definitely shows me as a male. What have you done? Ha ha...

Regards

Neil

New Kiwi Crew member

Big OOPS

I copied the coding from the female above you, but I had no idea it would include the gender.

I do hope Campbell can fix it - he is our resident techie genius!!!

But it may take a day or two - he also has a job.

Thank you for understanding.

Robynne
Thanks Robynne. The weekend will be spent familiarising myself with WT how-to guides, in readiness for the upcoming Source-a-thon.

Time to recruit again. Hear ye, Hear ye.

If there is anyone out there from New Zealand, or who has ancestry or a connection to NZ, and wants to be in the source-a-thon, please respond to this post - and to the current source-a-thon registration post (link below) - and indicate your interest in joining.

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/462656/will-you-participate-the-source-thon-current-registrations
