Founding Fathers/Revolutionary War Era project?

Hi guys,

I was working on a profile earlier for a prominent person from the Founding Fathers/Revolutionary War era and wondered if there should be a project to protect those profiles.  Anyone up for that?

Eowyn,

I do know that we do have Category: NSDAR Patriot Ancestors http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:NSDAR_Patriot_Ancestors and that of the 200 currently there, 21 are in lines that I manage (not all are in my direct line).  If there is interest in this, I would be willing to assist, but have no idea what that means, so I stress, ASSIST.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but someone was handling this group already.

Nae

Kitty Smith has been interested in this.

Eowyn, what about possible overlap with the US Presidents group?
I just saw this discussion and have some comments/suggestions.

I have an ancestor who is recognized by the DAR.  He was from Louisiana which was under Spanish control at the time.  Galvez, the governor, practiced a pro-France, anti-British policy and joined the revolutionaries in their war.

I added some categories a while back (some of which are in desperate need of better names... especially the first one).  They are:

* "Contributions From Areas Other than Original 13 States"  I believe something along this lines should be incorporated into the main list of categories under the American Revolution category.

under that category is

*"Louisiana Militia in the American Revolution" and
*"The Galvez Expedition" (with a written article attached)... it was this group of Louisiana and German Coastal Militia that fought in the Battle of Baton Rouge amongst other smaller battles.

I also placed "The Galvez Expedition"  under "Spanish Military History"

This profile http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fruge-78 for Pierre Antoine Fruge is my ancestor who the DAR recognizes as being part of the Galvez Expedition. (I have another also from Louisiana but he doesn't meet the requirements of being on a certain militia roll in order to be said to have participated in the Galvez Expedition.)

I' hope providing  my ancestor's profile link will help make what I am confusedly saying above a little more clear.

Thanks,
Donna

Yes, there should be a project, instead of categories only.  I will help.

I am interested and would be willing to be a project leader.  Would there be a way to auto add the project to the effected profiles?  There are well over 500. I would suggest an all encompassing name such as American Revolutionary War, American War for Independence or simply the 1776 Project.

It should include DAR, SAR, colony locations, Founding Fathers, and perhaps even Loyalist and free-space pages. Would that be of interest?

Good idea Kitty. I didn't even think about DAR or SAR.

Kitty, I think it would be fantastic if you were to be the project leader. I don't believe there is a way to auto add the project. We'll have to do that by hand.  I LOVE the idea of calling it the 1776 Project because that encompasses everything you'd suggested including (and things/people we haven't thought of yet.). I think it's brilliant.

OK, "1776 Project" it is and it will cover anything in the years 1776 to 1789 when the U.S. Constitution was ratified. That way this Project won't bump into the U.S. Presidents Project that is already established and provides a time frame for the founding fathers.  Sound good?

Lianne, how do I create a 1776 Project page?  It should have WikiTree links to:

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:American_Revolution

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:American_Revolution_Veterans

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:NSSAR_Patriot_Ancestors

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:American_Founding_Fathers

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Thirteen_Colonies

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:American_Revolution_British_Generals

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:American_Revolution_Loyalist

It should also have a resource section with links to:

http://patriot.sar.org/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=Grave%20Registry&-loadframes

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gs&

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

What else?  It should be fully editable and have a nice 1776 badge.  Thanks for your help on this, Lianne.

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has asked that we not link to their proprietary information without prior written approval.  This includes:

  • the DAR insignia
  • the DAR logo
  • all DAR Ancestor numbers
  • their public database.

Please delete all references to this proprietary information from your WikiTree profiles and do not use the former DAR template.  Thank you.

Kitty, one thing you can do is find a nice image for the template.  Just keep in mind it will be shrunk down to thumbnail size.
The 1776 name for the project is great, but the coverage should go back to 1775. I have several members of my tree who were Minutemen at Lexington, including a number of those "slain" (how their deaths were recorded in Lexington). One drawback to using DAR & SAR records, only those used to establish membership are listed.

We have a new 1776 Project!  I figured out how to do most of it, so here is what we have to start with: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:1776

I made a nice little 1776 graphic, but I don't know how to make it appear on the Project page.  Anyone know the syntax to display a linked picture?

Also, I don't know how to create the little 1776 badge for Project members. Does anyone know how to help with this?  Lianne, maybe?

Thank you for suggestion, Eowyn.  Everyone, please join us in our genealogical "pursuit of happiness".

Awesome Kitty, Im excited to see this project get going! Chris makes the badges if you want to message him and cc Lianne on it. Eowyn
Kitty, Are you planning on using the DAR / SAR service requirements for inclusion in the project? If so, Hudson's "History of the Town of Lexington" details non-military service of individuals in the book.
No, there are already categories for DAR and SAR. This project is for all profiles with a historical connection to the years 1776 through 1789, including loyalists, British, Hessians, and French ancestors.

There are other events with historical significance before the Declaration in 1776.  The Boston Tea party was in 1773, so I think the dates are flexibile for our Project.  Revo War ancestors that are not listed in the DAR should be included in the American Revo War Veterans Category, don't you think?
Your image needs to be in a template for the project, correct?
