Would it make more sense to load by hand a GEDCOM with 1600+ entrys or to try to load a partial list

I absolutely agree with you Vincent,   you will be surprised at how much more you will learn as you add each member by hand and a renewed interest in these people that are your family.

The advice in this discussion is no longer applicable. A new process for working with Gedcoms has been inaugurated. See https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/461205/have-you-tried-gedcompare-2-0 for more information.

That depends. I've never seen a gedcom upload that doesn't need editing. I lean toward entering by hand to avoid duplications and make sure each profile is properly formatted for readability. But if your gedcom does not have a lot of matches to the main tree, and you have time to edit, you could do the gedcom upload.

I've read both pros and cons of importing gedcoms, I chose to do it by hand and though its slow progress its made my edit my Ancestry Tree as I go and helped me find new sources and info!

If you are quite technical and understand inline sourcing and common citation practices then uploading and editing small chunks of your tree at a time may be an easier option, but if like me you are more of an 'geneologist in the making' you would definitely benefit from the manual choice in my opinion : )

I entered 7 generations of one family (575 typed pages) by hand, it took me 18 months. I didn't have a GEDCOM to upload.  it can be done.

On the other hand. you're relatively new to WikiTree, take the time to enter the first (oldest) 100 or 200 profiles.  Then import a very small sample, no more that 50 in a GEDCOM and see how much editing they need (you will have learned the tricks by then. )

Then you can decide which is more effective.
