Quick Poll: Which email software do you use? [closed]

We have some trouble with how Wiki links are formatted with some email software, and I would like to get an idea about how big of a problem it is.

Would you mind sharing where you read your email?

I may need a couple of you to test some links for me, too. It will only take about 5 mins of your time.

Thank you! :-)

UPDATE: Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to help. I think I have enough information now, but I'll let you know if we need anything else. Happy WikiTreeing!

TWC.com

Time Warner Cable aka Spectrum

Browser is google chrome

Use RCA7 tablet
Thanks, Eddie!

Does TWC have their own email software/webpage?

I'll go ahead and post a comment w/ a link on your profile. Just click the link and see if you get to the right place. If you have trouble, let me know.
Oh, that's what the board comment is !

Yeah, link worked good.

Dunno about the rest of your question. My service is part of my rent. Landlord picked twc. He didn't want a lot of wires and dishes on his building. Basic internet only. Cable TV etc not included. For TV, each tenant contacts twc for service and gets a different modem
Thanks, again, Eddie. :-)

Our messages crossed. I sent you an explanation via email.

by Susan Laursen G2G Astronaut (3.0m points)
Thanks, Susan!

So, when you're reading your email, you are reading it in the Apple email app on your iPad or iPhone, or are you looking at it on a webpage, like gmail.com?? Or in the Gmail app on your phone or tablet?
I use a g mail app on my i pad and i phone

And on my laptop i just open e mail on Google mail
OK, thanks!!! You should be good to go, then.

understand your question.
by Wayne Morgan G2G Astronaut (1.1m points)
Hi, Wayne!

I'm interested in where you read your email. Are you reading it in a piece of software on your desktop computer, phone or tablet? Or are you reading it through the "web interface" for your email service?

Outlook 2016 on my PC.  Mail app on my Samsung phone.
by Kathy Zipperer G2G6 Pilot (470k points)
Ah, perfect, Kathy!

I'm going to post a comment that contains a Wiki-formatted link to your profile page. Would you please take a look at that email in both Outlook and the Mail app on your phone, click the link, and let me know if the link works properly?

Hi, again, Kathy --

You wrote on my profile:

Julie: Opened perfectly in the mail app on my phone. There was no link in email on my PC. The words were there, no actual link and Outlook 2016 didn't think it was blocking it, but all the other WikiTree links were there. Let me know if I can help with other testing.

What email software are you using on your phone -- or what type of phone are you using?

Re: the email on your PC: Are you saying that you opened it in Outlook 2016, and the link was not formatted as a link? In other words, it wasn't clickable?

Also, I haven't used Outlook for decades, so I'm not sure what you mean by "Outlook didn't think it was blocking it."

Thank you!!

Julie I saw you closed this but thought I would answer your questions.

Office365 is our email provider.  Mail app (it's what it is cleverly called) on a Samsung Galaxy phone.  Office365 again for all email (kathy @ blahblah.com) providing syncing to Office Outlook 2016 on a PC.

I was trying to say that there wasn't any clickable link (no formatting to allow) in the email on my PC but it opened perfectly in my phone. Outlook usually puts a line saying it blocked this link or pictures, etc. on the email but lets me open the email.  It didn't say that so somewhere between there and here the actual link was stripped.

I just checked on my iPad and the link was there and opened perfectly in Safari.

Hi Julie, I use Microsoft outlook and read it on my PC and my Kindle. No problems with that. I think most of the problems that I have run across seem to come from Google. They don't seem to like our format.
by Shirley Dalton G2G6 Pilot (532k points)

Hi, Shirley!

What sorts of problems are you having with Google? My interest is in how the Wiki markup links are interpreted. For example:

[https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Member_How-To New Member How-To]

Some of our members get a "page doesn't exist" message when they try to click through on something like that. I've found that the problem lies mostly with Apple mail products -- e.g., Apple Mail, iOS mail on iPhone and iPad.

The Gmail apps all seem to be working fine.

Because you also use Outlook & a Kindle, I'm going to post a message on your page like I did for Kathy. Could you take a look at it and click through on the link in both Outlook and on your Kindle and let me know how it goes??

Thank you! :-)

No problem with either PC or Kindle. I have had comments from new members that they get page not found. I know several were on gmail.
It all depends on how they're reading their Gmail. If they're accessing it through one of the Gmail apps, they should be OK. However, if they're reading it through Apple mail, they're going to see problems.

Time will tell which other clients are causing problems. :-)
When I read WikiTree messages in a Google Group (because emal was sent to a project profile), links to WikiTree profiles are messed up if there is a space in the LNAB. Google inserts a + for the space instead of a _. If I want to follow the link, I have to edit the URL to change the + to a _.
That's interesting Ellen -- I'm not sure there's much we can do about that issue, though.

I'm focusing right now on how our links in posts to profiles come through in certain email clients.

I use gmail almost exclusively. Sometimes links work, other times not. I've not found a consistent pattern to when they do and when they don't.
by Debi Hoag G2G6 Pilot (395k points)
Hi, Debi!!

Are you reading Gmail through their web interface, or do you download email into desktop software??

If you think about it, the next time you notice an issue with a link, would you let me know?? Just note where you were reading the email and where the email came from, i.e., Private Message or a post on the Public Comments  for a profile.
80% of the time through the browser interface using Firefox, 5% through the browser interface using Chrome, 15% through the Inbox app on an iPad tablet.

Will do. I can tell you that the first part of the URL is getting duplicated but don't remember how much of it. I figured that out and have just been deleting the first part so I can move on.
Can you get me a screenshot?
Soon as I find one that doesn't work. Gonna be a bit, I'm in the middle of messengering and greeting
No rush. :-)

I tracked down a message I received from a volunteer, this is the link she received from one of the tour group messages. This follows the pattern that I've seen when I get bad links.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/How_to_Start_Climbing_Our_Tree_How_to_Start_Climbing_Our_Tree
Yeah, that link is consistent with what we're seeing in Apple mail products. It likes to replace the space in the link with an underscore, which means that it is then interpreted as all one link.

Phone, ipad, Macbook and Windows PC. Outlook, Gmail, BT mail, Telenor and more.
by Lynda Crackett G2G6 Pilot (670k points)

Thanks, Lynda!!

I'll post a note on your profile with a link. Would you mind taking a look at it through the different paths you use to read email and let me know which ones don't take you to the correct page?

OK. Off out now so it may be tomorrow before I get time to take a look at it.
No rush, Lynda! Thank you!

MacBook Pro email reader or Outlook for Macs
by John Susnir G2G6 Pilot (117k points)
Thanks, John!

I'll post a message to your profile.
Hey, John --

When you took a look at the link I sent you, were you reading that email in Apple Mail or Outlook for Macs?? Or Both? :-)
In my Apple MacBook Pro reader it starts to open the page then stops and says the page doesn't exist.  In my Outlook for Macs the link opened right up and displayed all the content.

Also Thunderbird, with messages downloaded to desktop or laptop, and I keep it updated regularly.  Haven't noticed any problems with the links.  Rarely use the webmail service.
by Dennis Barton G2G6 Pilot (553k points)
Thanks, Dennis!!

I should have asked Kevin this same thing, but are you on a PC or a Mac?
Both are PCs running Windows 10.
Thanks!! (I just left a note on your profile.)
The link takes me to the page that I think you intend it to:

I use both gmail and hotmail on a Chrome internet browser on a Mac laptop or desktop.  Occasionally gmail app on an android phone.  Occasionally I switch to Safari if I need two internet browsers open at the same time.
by Emma MacBeath G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Thanks, Emma -- I'll post a note on your profile w/ a link. Would you take a look at the notification in all your different email places and let me know how it goes?
Hello Julie!  Yes, I have a link on all spots for gmail (laptop using Chrome and Safari and also Android phone)

No link on hotmail at any of the above mentioned spots.  Seems to be a hotmail problem.  I do see the URL though at hotmail and could copy and paste it to get to the page.

On both a laptop running Windows 10  using AT&T mail that uses Yahoo mail base.  And on Android Smart Phone.
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (829k points)
Cool, Laura!!

I think Yahoo! is one of our problem areas. I'll post a link for you to test out.

Thanks!
Just sent you results with screen prints.  Did not work at all on phone.  Link does not come in as a live link but the ones in the footer do come in as live links.

Got it to work on the laptop but had to do 6 different things to find the one that worked.  That is why I sent you screen prints of what worked.
