Shared Photo: Arthur Charles Whitney in the CT military Census

+5 votes

My Grandmother's second husband Arthur, was a traveling salesman. In 1917 he filled out this document for the Connecticut draft board. I enjoyed reading his answers to the questions in item 11. He was the sole support of his mother at that time, and was only a "fair" swimmer. They didn't draft him.

I wanted to share this family photo of Arthur Whitney with the community. Location: Bridgeport, CT. Date: 1917.

I love this, Alexandra! While researching my maternal family to write a story earlier this year, I discovered one of my aunt's was married to a man who was listed on the National Jewish Welfare Board.

Wat an interesting document, Alexandra! I like that he listed his height with that extra 1/2 inch.  I wonder if any other states had such questionnaires?

New York also did a military census in 1917 - however the records are mostly unavailable and some have been lost as far as I can tell. I spoke to the Manhattan City Archivist and he said they were in a back room somewhere just gathering dust.
Andrew Van Duyn, don't you wish you had a million hours in a day to devote to finding, listing, indexing, etc., all the records we know are out there!?

I just found a lovely document, called "Queens County in Olden Times" and it has so many families listed, and most of them don't appear in WikiTree yet; if I didn't have so much to do with my own family searching, I would enter everything and everyone in the book!
