On the 1880 Census for Elmwood, Tuscola Co., MI, ED 402, Page 16, Stamped page 121B, Joseph, a 30yo farmer, says he was born in ENGLAND. Amanda, 25yo, says she was born in CANADA, as were her parents.
There is a family tree on Ancestry which says that Joseph was born in Walton, Somerset, ENGLAND, and that, after the death of his first wife, he came to the US in 1875 and married Amanda on 12 Aug 1876 in Ellington, Tuscola Co., MI. According to the 1900 US Census ED 112, Sheet 2, Stamped page 128A, Joseph did come to the US in 1875, and Amanda was born in Nov. 1854 and came to the US in 1863.
