Borrowing this from Greg Slades Post for July 2017 - Thanks Greg

Hear ye, hear ye! If you are interested in people who are famous, infamous, notable, noted, significant, important, historic, heroic, or otherwise fascinating, then the Notables Project might be for you!

The idea behind this post is for anyone who needs help with connecting Notables to the tree to post and ask for help. Or if you just want to tell us who you have successfully connected up.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Notables

Above is the Notables Project page where you can find unconnected Notables who have profiles and who need to be connected to the tree.

I think this months theme can be Sports people - any kind of sports - Ice Hockey. Baseball, Basketball, Football, Rugby, Soccer, Aussie Rules, (Aussies know what I mean LOL), and my favourite Gymnastics, They can be Professional OR Amateur (Olympic medallsts and World Champions), as long as they are NOTABLE!!  (which usually means they have a Wikpedia page)

But you can ask for help with ANY Notable. They do NOT have to be a sports person.

I'll start off by saying that I have kind of connected Canadian Hockey Superstar Sidney Crosby to the global tree - the connection should go through overnight.

Crosby's grandmother was already connected so really, I didn't have to do much. I only had to do connect Sidney's father and himself. He is currently missing 3 out of 4 grandparents. If only we can get a copy of Sidney's parents marriage certificate and see what their parents were listed as.

hi Robynne,

there's already another tag for the ones who are ''infamous'', the Black Sheep Project covers them.
That touches on something that I've been thinking about recently, namely that the Notables Project page says that it's for profiles which don't fall under other projects. (So, in a sense, it should really be called "Other Notables" or something like that.) I've been thinking that we should do some housecleaning by removing the Notables template from those profiles which fall under other projects.

I was only sort of peripherally aware of the Black Sheep Project. Now that I've looked at the page, I'm wondering why there isn't a subcategory for tyrants/despots/dictators/whatever-we-want-to-call-them: I'm thinking of people like Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Mengistu Haile Mariam, and people like that. Was there a deliberate choice to exclude them from the Black Sheep Project, or is it just that nobody has suggested it yet?
I would have to agree. There are a number of profiles that have several project templates on them. It can be rather confusing.

Perhaps if we could restrict notable names to just one project - whichever one they are best known for - then they can stay off the "Other Notables" list.

We just need to decide which other projects fit the description of being a Notables Project. Is there a project for Saints? Not forgetting Black Sheep, Star Wars, Star Trek and Mayflower.

What about Projects specifically for Authors, Singers (musicians), Sports notables etc?

Some of these projects also allow people who do not have a Wikipedia page so they would not qualify as a Notables project. These would include the Great Pilgrim Migration, Acadia, Great War and so on.

I hope that I am making some kind of sense.
I think Nicky Hayden (Motorcycle road racer, winning both World (MotoGP) and US (AMA Superbike) championships) should be considered a sports Notable.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hayden-2537

Nicholas Patrick Hayden (1981 - 2017)

What is the process for getting him appropriately "tagged"?  (He has an extensive Wikipedia page)

ETA that he is now connected.
Greg, not sure if those would fall within the purview of Black Sheep as currently defined.  Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot etc certainly were responsible for mass murders on a horrendous scale, but did they actually do any of them themselves or get somebody else to do the dirty work?  One has to find a limit somewhere for a project.

The term Notables might be the problem here, sports figures might better fall under the title Champions.  Don't think having or not having a profile in Wikipedia should be a criterion, since Wikipedia is an ongoing process anyways.

Hi Robynne, thanks for this post.

I need help please connecting the following two brave military heroes' to our overall WikiTree global Tree. I have tried to find more ancestors for them but ran into roadblocks. Maybe as you read their profiles you would be inspired to help get them connected:

*Vincent Robert Capodanno (1929 - 1967)

Vietnam War, KIA, United States of America.

URL: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Capodanno-2

*Augustus Barry (1840 - 1871)

Medal of Honor

URL: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Barry-1904

Thanks in advance for any assistance that can be given!!

I've wondered if my Great-Grandfather, Philip David Daniel, might qualify as a Notable. He was a professional middleweight boxer from 1912-1917 who became State Middleweight Champion of Michigan.

His scrapbook (link to digitized PDF form) contains several newspaper clips from his boxing days, his businesses, and his work in the ministry. I haven't had time to read them all--there's even three editorial cartoons of him in there. I think most of those articles are from The Flint Journal.

by Nathan Daniel G2G1 (1.9k points)
How long did he hold the middle weight state champion title before  losing it to the other fellow? Was a few days, weeks, months, a year or two?

That scrapbook is a real treasure!!

Scott would need to look at this and determine if Phillip Daniel qualifies as a Notable or not.
I've been searching through all those newspaper clips trying to find out. I haven't found the boxing title, but I did find middleweight state champion titles in wrestling, which was his original sport. It looks like he was champion in Missouri as well as Michigan, and the former title seems from articles to have been kept for years after moving to Michigan.

I see a lot of boxing matches and references to his reputation for boxing in the Great Lakes and Canada. A number of articles mention that at one time he dropped to lightweight, because he was billed to fight for the honor of meeting Freddie Welsh--then lightweight boxing champion of the world.

After his sports career, he owned a number of businesses and became an ordained minister, maintaining the same pugnacious boxing/wrestling attitude throughout everything. That kept him in the public eye long after his athletic career ended.

I wish I had more relatives with scrapbooks like this one! I could spend all my family tree time just working through it and still not be close to finished.
Based on what I can find on him (which is very little unfortunately), it does not appear that he has any evidence of his "notability" beyond the information you've shared. Although it does appear that he had a very interesting life and certainly notable in many respects, based on the Wikipedia standards for Notability, I don't see enough evidence to recommend him for Notable status at this time. However, I am still hunting around and if I find something or you find something additional that would help push him over the edge (I'm always on the fence with these things), please let me know. I really like what I see of him, and I'm sure if I could find an internet site with some boxing results, or a news article that discusses boxers of that period and notes his accomplishments, then it could be enough to boost his status. I'm not terribly opposed if you put the Notables tag on him, but just trying to be fair so that we don't make everyone a Notable.

Let me know if anyone has other thoughts. I'm very open to suggestion on these things.

Thanks for getting this started.

I've been working off and on with the profile of actor Warwick Davis, aka Wicket the Ewok, aka Willow, aka the evil Leprechaun, and on and on.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Davis-48182

He was apparently the focus of a WDYTYA episode in England that I missed, but tried my best to reconstruct his tree based on numerous synopsis' of the show. If someone was fortunate to record it, please help fill in any blanks.

And I'm beginning to work on recently deceased Ara Parseghian

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Parseghian-2

The Notre Dame Football Coach who had one of the most successful careers in college football coaching history.

All of this between trying to finish up several other Notables, like Elizabeth Montgomery - thank you for someone who recently noted that there was additional genealogical information on her family. It opened up a huge breakthrough on her tree. I've just about got it filled in. Only a few missing now, and I'm not sure they'll be easy to find.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Scott, I have a copy of that WDYTYA episode with Warwick Davis. I'll watch it again over the weekend and let you know if there are any blanks or errors.
Scott, I sent you the details of Warwick's ancestry - did you get it?
Hi Robynne!

Yes - I got the information the other day - thank you for this!

It's been a bit crazy lately and I'm trying to go too many directions at once, so I've got it on my list of things to do, but just keep running out of time for them.

If you get to it before I do, then I'm more than OK with that. But I'll try to keep track of it and get it done here over the next few days.

Thanks!

Scott
I see that you have added in that missing generation - which was kind of bugging me - so I will leave the rest of his tree in your capable hands!! LOL
LOL - sorry... once I wrote the note, I thought about it and knew if I sat on it too much longer, my mind would wander and... well, it wouldn't be a priority anymore. So I sat down and took a good look. Once you pointed out the missing generation, the records were there to show it, which was very nice.

Thank you for all your help!
You're most welcome Scott. I'm going to scan to check out the census records and add in the siblings - some of those families were quite large - and see if i can find a connection to the global tree through a sibling!!
Scott, on Warwick Davis tree, please do NOT forget to link Winifred Durban Pain to her mother Jessie Howe, the wife of McGregor Durban!! Winifred is a private profile so I cant do that.
Thanks! I opened her up as I found her birth record and a most likely death record. Since she was born 1910-ish and likely passed around 1980, she should be safe to open up. I also linked her mother, as it looked really odd for her to have a half-sister (but that's fixed now). :)
Great!!  That looks much better now. Thank you!!

Now I can concentrate on the Pains and the Howes - and maybe start on the Davis Side
Robynne!

I think he's connected now! :)

Thank you so much for all your help in tracking down those final few details from the WDYTYA episode. Between those details and a couple of fortunate researchers who had done work on his line, plus a very fortunate connection to a "Packer" way up his line that was already on WikiTree - well, it all worked out nicely. We should see the links update tonight and we'll see how close of a relative he is.
You are most welcome, and that is very good news to read!!!

Thanks for letting me help. It's been fun!!

I"m ready to add Robert Theodore "Bob" Trumpy, tight end for the Cincinnati Bengals and longtime commentator on the NFL broadcasts for NBC..  He has a very nice Wikipedia page, so he qualifies as a Notable.  I just need to know what to set him as far as privacy goes since he's still living.  I also need to know if his father is still alive (He'd be 93 if he is).Bob's also my 3rd cousin once removed, though I've never met him.
by Dave Dardinger G2G6 Pilot (441k points)
Since he is a public figure, you could probably set him as yellow - Private with public biography and public tree. That way his personal details are private but everyone can still trace his family tree and read his bio. That is with I do with my notables.

As for the father, he can have the same level of privacy as well.

If you do the Green privacy level - PUBLIC level - then EVERYTHING can be read - Personal details as well as bio and family tree.  The only difference is that only the manager and those on the trusted list can edit that profile.
Thanks for your advice.  I've found an interesting article when his father was a POW in WWII as well as his army entrance information.  And I linked to the Wilipedia page for Robert Jr.  Hopefully I'll find whether his is alive or not and modify things then.
Oh - Bob Trumpy! I remember watching him as a kid! Big Bengals fan back then. Glad to see he's getting some recognition!

I added Edward Allcard https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Allcard-3 in answer to the call for notables in sports. He was a centenarian sailing notable who died last month at the age of 102. I hope others can help connect him to the one tree. Also he needs the Project Projected template.
by Theresa Myers G2G6 Mach 1 (15.3k points)
edited by Theresa Myers
Edward's birth registration in 1914 shows his mother's maiden name as Whitmore. There are two possible sets of parents for Edward:

Victor Allcard married Ethel Kate Whitmore in Kingston, Surrey in 1907
Rupert Allcard married Helen Flora Whitmore in Chelsea in 1912

I think this is a case of two brothers marrying two sisters, but I don't know which set of parents should be assigned to Edward.
Have just found Edward on the 1939 register on Findmypast, living with his parents Rupert and Helen in Fairmile Dene, Esher. His date of birth is shown as 31 October 1914, so it's the right person, and his occupation is shown as a naval architect.
That's great, thanks Carol! I added parents, one set of grandparents and wife following up on this.

That was quick Theresa, have had another look at this today and have a suggested route for a possible connection:

from Edward Julius Allcard, add his father Edward Allcard and mother Frances Cannon
then add Edward's parents John Allcard (1779-1856) and Mary Ann Swinburn (1788-1843)
their daughter Mary Ann Allcard (1826-1884) married Benjamin Hornbuckle Hine (1814-1893)
and his parents Jonathan Hine and Melicent Chambers are already on Wikitree and connected. Will try and help with some sourcing for this, should maybe look at the Hine family to start with, as they are unsourced.

Am I the only one who noticed the resemblance between the LNAB Allcard and the fake "backwards name" from the movies of "Alucard"?

Sorry - trivial side note, but it made me smile when I saw the last name in this thread.

Back to your regularly scheduled sourcing now...

Theresa, have finally created the missing profiles, so this branch should connect tomorrow. The GRO website shows that Victor and Rupert's mother's maiden name was Harseim, so maybe you could amend Helene's LNAB to this. I think that Edward and Helene were probably married in Germany, around 1875, but can find no proof of this for you.

Hi! Thanks Robynne for starting this thread.

I started a profile for actress Jeanne Moreau earlier this week but I'm a bit stumped with sources for her parents. Could someone help me with sources for her mother ?

Geneanet/Geneastar has a fine tree for Jeanne, only sourced, as far as I can see with Généalogie Magazine (which is not bad). Her father's records are unfortunately not available on the net but there are online census records where he appears, so perhaps that's enough to start the profile for him. After that, his parents should be easy.

For her mother I really need help, because I have no experience with English sources. She was Sarah Kathleen Buckley, born 30 June 1907 in Blackpool, Lancashire, daughter of Granville Buckley, born 1877, and Elizabeth Ann Clancy, born 1876, both from Oldham. I'm looking for sources that would be less secondary than an internet tree copied from an article in a magazine.

Here is the link to Jeanne's genealogy: http://gw.geneanet.org/plenicolpech?lang=fr&pz=patrick&nz=le+nicol+pech&ocz=0&p=jeanne&n=moreau&oc=8

Thank you !

by Isabelle Martin G2G6 Pilot (566k points)
Isabelle, I can help with sourcing for Kathleen, have found her birth registration that shows her mothers maiden name as Clancy, the 1911 census where she is with her mother and siblings, the 1901 census showing her parents together, and her parents marriage in 1895 in Oldham. If you go ahead and create her parents, then I'll add all these sources for you.

Wonderful! Thank you, Carol !

And here is Kathleen : https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Buckley-2595

I've created profiles for Granville Buckley and Elizabeth Ann Clancy, and added as many sources as I can find. It's strange but Granville seems to disappear and I can't find his death. I think he was in the merchant navy during the first World War, so maybe he died sometime at sea.The name Elizabeth Buckley is too common to trace as well, so I don't know what happened to her either.

Hi Robynne

Thanks for highlighting the support that is available if we ask!

Over the past couple of months I have been adding and connecting a number of people who are notable in Australia.

One project has been on those who have held the viceregal position of Governor of New South Wales - the oldest continuous institution in Australia. I've managed to add and connect about 25 in-all but three at this stage still elude me and I would appreciate others' input.

The three that I can't figure out how to connect at this stage are:

  1. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gipps-4
  2. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Anderson-30518
  3. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cutler-1378
by Peter Jones G2G6 Mach 2 (28.5k points)
I think I might have connected Arthur Cutler up through going up and sideways, around and adding a couple of people. The final connection was added Badgery-26 and connecting him to his father. Will have to see tomorrow if it worked.

Also George Gipps through his son's wife's family (Connecting https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fielden-98 to her parents)

There's an entry on the Peerage website for Rex Hamilton Osborne who I think was the son of Hamilton Osborne, if so then Rex's daughter June married Randolph Spencer-Churchill who is already on WikiTree and is connected, and this will then connect Sir David Murray Anderson

Here is a sports-related Notable who needs help : Baron Pierre de Coubertin.

EDIT - there is a possible connection through his brother, whose wife had Caraman ancestors. Working on it now - but these French Revolution era profiles are tough. Hope to finish it before I'm off for a holiday !

EDIT2 - he's connected.

We just had another sports figure pass away - Don Baylor.

Don was a professional baseball player and manager in the MLB. He played ball for 19 years (1970 - 1988) and then went on to be a manager from 1993 - 2002). He was a member of the 1986 World Series winning Boston Red Sox. He passed away on August 7, 2017 from complications with multiple myeloma, which he was diagnosed with in 2003.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Baylor

I'll see what I can do to get a profile started for him.
by Scott Fulkerson G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Baylor-179

I found a few details out about him - not a lot out there for him at the moment, but at least I believe I have his father's profile set up. Should be possible to go from there.
I've made some progress - most of his tree - at least the majority of what could be created with enough valid sources - has been entered. Now working on the inevitable Aunts and Uncles and looking for relationships via marriages. I still have plenty to add, and finding a few more each day.
Still hunting for Don Baylor's connection - I always find myself adding family after family that have no connection and in the end, stuck in a dead end, but I'll push on and perhaps I'll get lucky on this one. Lots of interesting profiles added and I guess he'll be in good company, along with my other unconnected's: Jackie Robinson, Louis Braille, Gary Cooper, Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder, Noel Coward, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ted Cassidy.
Oh my - I may be in a bit over my head for a little bit with this one. I stumbled into some previously done research, which was nice, but the problem is that they didn't source it on Family Search. I like to pull out my sources ahead of entering them in on WikiTree - sort of using FamilySearch as my drafting board - and then once I've got them cleaned up and I know what I'm dealing with, enter them in here.

BUT, a few of the researched items were just a bit off, which led me to question all the information, and while I've only had to make a couple of corrections, it's taking time to go through 100 profiles to see what is and isn't accurate. At the same time, I'm adding another 100 profiles to their research where they didn't go deep enough, and this means I'm going to be mired in research a bit longer than I originally thought.

So if anyone is bored and wants to help, please feel free. The place I ended up was here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bonner-1420

Dave Bonner has many children - his wife has many siblings - all of which have their own families and so on and so forth. I'm not completely convinced I'm going to quickly run into a connection out of these, but at the very least, I'll have these families researched and entered, and maybe someone will benefit from this down the road.

And on a slight side note, when researching black families within the Civil War time periods, nothing thrills me more than to get an ancestor with a birth date prior to about 1860 - and I got 1 out of the mix (the wife's father). I only wish I had reliable research to go a bit further back, but unfortunately most of those records are lost or simply unreliable.

Onward and upward!

As mentioned above, Robynne and I were able to get Warwick Davis connected to the global tree, so now it's time to move on to a few others. In the theme of sports, I went back to a couple of my long unconnected in Jackie Robinson, the baseball player.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Robinson-13

I've added LOTS of family to him, but no connection yet. Any assistance here would be appreciated.

I also figured I'd start another famous sports figure, Wilt Chamberlain. Don't know why I picked him - guess it was a bit random. Name stuck in my head, and off we go. I'd got a basic profile going and have started to sort out his family and sources before putting the rest out. If someone gets there before me, then I'm more than fine with that. :)

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chamberlain-3569

I guess I never thought about the fact that he stated off with the Harlem Globetrotters. Lots of great memories of those guys. I always remembered as a kid running to the TV to watch their routines when it came on.

There's a couple more that I need to follow up on as well, but they're not coming to mind at the moment. Maybe I'll recall them later.

Thanks for posting this, Robynne. I couldn't do it, because I've been on the road since the beginning of the month, and haven't had any time to WikiTree.

Just some explanation of the changes to the Notables Project page that some people may have noticed:

  • I've been moving notables who have WikiTree profiles from the "People In Need of a WikiTree Profile" section down to the sections below it, because a lot of them already had profiles and hadn't been moved down the page yet.
  • I've added a new section called "Notable Profiles in need of Notables Project markers" for notables who do have WikiTree profiles, but don't have the basics added to their profile to mark them as being part of the Notables Project. (Since the colours of the headers of the existing sections were grey, silver, and yellow, I chose brown for the new section, so I think of them as being iron, bronze, silver, and gold, and the goal is to move each notable to the next colour as their profile is improved.)
  • I have moved some of the notables from the "Notable Profiles in need of Improvement" section up to the "Notable Profiles in need of Notables Project markers", because they were lacking the basic markers, even if they were more advanced in other ways.
  • I haven't even touched the "Notable Profiles - Connected!" section, because I haven't finished working through the other sections yet, but the goal is for all of the notables to make it to gold status eventually.
by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (678k points)

Okay, I have finished clearing out those people who already have WikiTree profiles noted from the "People In Need of a WikiTree Profile" section down to the "Notable Profiles in need of Notables Project markers" section, or even further down, in some cases where they already had all the markers applied. (There may still be people in the "People In Need of a WikiTree Profile" section who have WikiTree profiles. I just moved the ones who already had the profiles linked on that page. I didn't actually search on the rest of them.)

Maintaining that chart is a full time job, Greg. Thanks for stepping up and cleaning it up.

I have now finished working through the the "Notable Profiles in need of Notables Project markers" (bronze) section, and have started working on the "Notable Profiles in need of Improvement" (silver) section. I've already moved a couple of profiles from silver up to bronze because they were lacking the basic markers, and moved a couple of others from bronze down to silver.

I am either profile manager or have written bios of 4 people who I think should be in the notables project.  Would someone add them if they agree please.

They are Edith Stein notable as a Philosopher and as a Saint, she is already part the holocaust project

www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stein-1730

Louis Martin and his wife Zelie Guerin who are parents of St. Therese and Saints in their own right.

www.wikitree.com/wiki/Martin-28682

www.wikitree.com/wiki/Guérin-469

and their daughter Leonie Martin whose cause for beatification has been introduced, she is less well known than the others so  I give her Wikipedia reference

www.wikitree.com/wiki/Martin-28945

www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Léonie_Martin

Unfortunately I have not been able to connect any of these to the main tree, even though I have added various members of their families.  I expect it is harder to connect those in countries where English is not the spoken language. I wonder if others have had difficulty connecting French and German profiles?
I should say that none of these are related to me, but I have an interest in them and their families.

Any relation to Actor Nathan Filion who plays Rick Castle on the TV Series, Castle? Well, he did until the series was cancelled last year!!

Based on the details from Nathans Wikipedia Page - it would be interesting to fond out!!

This is from Nathans Wikipedia page

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Fillion

(Nathan) Fillion was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the younger of two sons of Bob Fillion and Cookie Fillion (née Early),[4] both retired English teachers.[5] Both sides of his father's family were part of the Quebec diaspora in Fall River, Massachusetts,[6][7] and his mother had a Norwegian maternal grandfather and a Finnish maternal grandmother.[4][8]

Well there is a profile for Nathan Filion - surname spelt wrong - but no other details at all, other than his Wikipedia page. Since Nathan is a Canadian, maybe I willl look in to this!!
