This is a little off the subject, but may be interesting to you.

Last name: Clegg

This name is of English locational origin from a place thus called at the foot of Owl Hill, Lancashire. Recorded as Clegg circa 1200 and as Cleg in the 1285 Assize Court Rolls of that county the name derives from the Olde Norse 'kleggi' meaning 'haystack', originally believed to be the name of the above hill. The surname was first recorded in the mid 13th Century, (see below). In 1379 one, Ricardus de Cleghe and a Henricus de Cloghe appeared in 'The Poll Tax Returns Records of Yorkshire', and in 1581 Thomas Clegg, tanner, of Middleton, was entered in 'The Wills Records at Cheshire'. The name is particularly well recorded in Lancashire church registers from the late 16th Century. On April 17th 1582 Alice, daughter of John Clegg, was christened in Manchester Cathedral, and on July 19th 1598 Alice Clegg and Adam Wild were married in Oldham. Samuel Clegg, the elder, (1781 - 1861) was a pioneer of gas-lighting in Yorkshire and London (1813). He also invented the water gas-meter. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Nicholas de Clegg, which was dated 1260, Baines' History of Lancashire, during the reign of King Henry III, The Frenchman, 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Alan, 1812 is before the introduction of Civil Registration so there will be no birth certificate. You should be looking for a baptism record.

I did a quick search on FamilySearch (link to results) for John Clegg born 1810 to 1814. There are quite a few John Cleggs baptised in Lancashire during that time period, including at least four baptised in Rochdale in 1812 and at least two three baptised in Rochdale in 1813. You'll need some more information to provide clues as to which one is your man.

Alan,

You asked for the names of John Clegg's parents of Rochdale born. 1812 and said that his wife's name is Mary Green. John Clegg was born in 1812 and Christened 7 days after he was born at Saint Bartholomew's, Colne, Lancashire, England. John Clegg and Mary Green were married at Saint Bartholomew's, Colne, Lancashire, England in 1831. John's parents are shown as Richard and Mary Clegg. Richard Clegg was Christened at Saint Bartholomew's, Colne, Lancashire, England in 1786. His parents are shown as John and Matilda Clegg. quite possibly John Clegg's grandparents.

PS I used to live on a Clague Road in the USA. I'm guessing that Clegg and Clague are pronounced the same.

Frank

Do you know the dates of Richard and Maria birthday
I don't have the birth dates of Richard and Maria. The answers I posted are not etched in granite. They were obtained at familysearch.org  which is free and has extensive information. You may need to find a resource that will verify the accuracy the connections found. There may be more than one Richard Clegg who was baptized at Saint Bartholomew's, Colne, Lancashire, England.
