Adding a ship & voyages to Australia

HI Everyone,

I have added a ship but now I want to add a voyage to the ship and then add to that voyage several people who travelled at that time. I'm having trouble working out the tags, and how I should add the voyage to the ship's page ( i have not created the voyage page yet).

Could someone also let me know if I have the tags correct for the ship's profile?

Thanks, Sandra

Usually you create a category with the ship name followed by the year of the voyage.  See [[Category:Guildford 1829]] as an example for a convict ship. See [[Category:Mary Anne 1840]] for an example of an immigrant ship.

When adding the list of voyages to the space page, put a colon in the category name. [[:Category:Great Britain 1849]]

Sometimes I put information about passengers in a wikitable on the category page.

HI Richard,

thanks for responding to my query,  putting a colon in the category name did not work as I don't have enough clearance for this function it has to be a supervisor, so in the meantime, I have created the two pages below and will continue to work on them over the next week to put more data on both, I will then link the profiles that I have for the voyage in 1861.  When I read the instructions for creating a ship page it said to put in the built date rather than the voyage date (which makes sense if there are multiple voyages), hopefully,  it will all become clearer in due course.

For the ship - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Great_Britian_(1845)

For the voyage - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Great_Britain_1861

Thanks once again, Cheers Sandra

Hi Sandra, I added the ship for you and placed it on John's profile. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Great_Britain_1861

What I usually do is have the correct sub category open. In this case Immigrant Ships to Australia | Shipping | Arrivals to Victoria.

On the person's profile I then type [[Category:Great Britain 1861]] and save. The category will then show as a red link on the person's profile. Click the link and paste the top categories in the description box, then the info about the ship.

Your ancestor will then be shown on the page along with others as they add them to this voyage.

Hi Tess,

I have added another passenger and will work at adding the others that are connected to my tree.  I have also transcribed  the completed passenger list  for the voyage into excel, Richard suggested putting "passengers in a wikitable on the category page." Is there any way to convert the excel table into a wikitable and put it up on the page to help others?

Thanks Sandra

You can use this converter for excel to wiki. https://tools.wmflabs.org/excel2wiki/

Hi Tess,

I've added in the table, the link you gave did not work but I used https://tools.wmflabs.org/excel2wiki/excel2wiki.php and it worked a treat.

I think that https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Great_Britain_1861 probably should be deleted as this was the initial incorrect one that I made, I have disconnected  John Bassett's profile so now I think it's floating around in Wiki Cyber space as junk data.  Sorry for creating extra work and thanks for all you help.

Cheers Sandra
