Seeking Parents of Fredrick William Moore b. Manchester, England 1840 d. 1910 Vermont

My 2x great-grandfather Frederick William Moore was born in Manchester, England 25 May 1840.

He enlisted in the British Army at or near Handover (?) and came to Canada during a raid 19 October 1864.

He married Mary Jane Tye in 1865.

They had 6 children, the first born in Canada.and the rest in St. Albans, Vermont where they lived the remainder of their lives.

He is quite well documented after arriving in Vermont but any information from 1864 or earlier in Canada or England would be much appreciated.  Especially seeking his parents and ancestry.

Thank you for your help!

Keith,

What province were they in,in Canada and which county or city if you have them?
Hi Frank,

The only indicator I have is that his wife was born in Hemmingford Quebec.  That also makes reasonable sense as Vermont borders Quebec and many of my relatives crossed back and forth.

I'll keep looking sir...
I just found that his first child was born 9 March 1866 at Sandwich Ontario

I have been puzzling this profile for sometime today, Keith.

Not made any progress, except I keep coming back to William Moore that is to be found in Portsea, Hampshire, not far from Andover. This William was an engine fitter in 1861, and I have not been able to trace him post 1861. Your 2GG seems to be known as Fred in US Census!

I will turn the question around for a new slant. How do you know he was born Manchester on 25 May 1840?

Ron

That is what his daughter (my ggm) wrote down in the family "bible" (not a bible but a notebook of family names and dates).

Here is an image of that page; half way down it says about Fred.  The next two pages cover more about his children and grand children:

Thank you Ron!

Looking at Fredrick's profile, there is a 'public comment' in 2015 that gives details of the marriage, and that he was born in Quebec, rather than Manchester.  Or have you already discounted this data?

If he was English by birth, he would have enlisted in Andover rather than Handover.

Hi Ros, the info saying he is not the other person referred to in the comments is relatively solid, however some of the spelling is iffy.  In our family "bible" it says Handover but the "H" has an "A" over or under it... both exist so it kind of reads Handover or Aandover.  Sorry.  I'm quite certain he was born in England.
Must be me.  I have never heard of a place called Handover, but Andover (in Hampshire) has always been linked with the military, and Army HQ is there? It was just a thought if you were looking for military records.
What I said Ros, was that my source obviously was not sure of the place name or spelling and that the place you said is probably right.

That looks really tempting Ros... I'll try those names to dig for more.  Thank you!
