Biography Builders Aug/Sept 2017. Given names that start with "S"

+19 votes
884 views

This Month Aug. 15 to Sept 15: The theme is people whose given names begin with the letter "S" Sams, Seans, Susans etc.

Biography Builders Goal: To make profiles as complete as possible with well-written biographies and sources. You should research as much as you can find on a person, writing the information onto the profiles to create as complete a life story as you can for that person. Sourcing should be full citations. This includes adding categories and links to events and people connected to that profile and citing all those additions. See the first month for examples of how to participate.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section.

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • One of the suggestions was siblings. I think this takes up real estate.
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (i.e. Disputed persons sections, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you own the copyright or they are in the public domain).
  • Categories/Projects.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page, linked below.

We had some late comers to last months theme "Great great grandparents," so we're extending the deadline to August 31, for the great great grands theme. I'll do the count for July/August on Sept 1.
Ok, here we go again.  I may have to dig deep for some S's.  oops, hit wrong button.  Back track and start again. :(
Yes please, and thank you Anne.

1.
We should still list additional great-great bios in our answer for last month, right? Not add them to the answers for this month.

I kind of like the idea of having overlapping challenges although I can see it would get confusing.
Yes Amanda list your great greats in last months question, until the 31st, but since he's also an S you could add him to this one instead. Not both, just one.
Whoops, hit wrong button, too.
Hit wrong button.

Done all my interesting S names now. Might find the odd one to add, but I am going to concentrate on improving my other profiles. Will definitely join this challenge next month. I have enjoyed it and improving profiles is what I want to concentrate on.
I keep trying to add links on G2G to the profiles I have done biographies for. I realise it must be simple, but I cannot make the links work. I have looked for information about how to do it on the help files on wikitree but I cannot find anything. What am I missing? Can someone advise me please?

when you are on the person's profile page at the top right hand side are 5 "drop down menus": "My wikitree" "name-number" "add""Find" and "Help"

I just copy the "name-number" (by dragging mouse over it and select copy when it is highlighted) )and then paste it into here eg. Curnick-42

I think the other option is to copy the url from the browser page eg. https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Owers-109&public=1 then put [] around it like [https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Owers-109&public=1] ok that doesn't work as good! Ignore that suggestion
Thanks so much Michelle. That works. I have been copying the number from under where it says Profile Manager. I have tried various other ways and noting seemed to work. I was getting really frustrated about it.
Welcome to Bio Builders Joan. That was fast. 40 wow. You may add {{Biography Builders 10}} to your profile. 10 more this month and you can add the 50 template.
Thanks Anne. I have a lot more to do.
I see you've already started on the October births. I haven't had a chance to even look yet.

OK Anne B said I could edit the list as I add them so here goes:

1) Samuel Levis (1649 - 1734) - First Levis to immigrate to America in 1684. He is my 9x great grandfather and can trace his direct lineage to William I, "The Conqueror", King of England. Genealogically Defined.

2) Samuel "Sammy" S. Sigh. (Saia-29) Added parents, brothers, sisters, birth, marriages, occupations, children and death.Genealogically Defined.

3) Susanna (Foster) White (Foster-14715) - She is mistakenly listed as the daughter of Jonas Humphrey. However, Susanna was the daughter of Thomas Foster (1580 - 2 Mar 1618) and Elizabeth Seamer (c. 1580 - 18 Nov 1676). Her mother Elizabeth married Thomas, and they had four children before he died. Elizabeth then married Jonas Humphrey. Though not "adopted" in the formal sense, Susanna most likely used Humphrey as her last name until she was married. In Jonas Humphrey's 12 Mar 1662 will he lists Susanna as his daughter bequeathing to "my daughter Susanna White, wife of Nicholas White" a token 10s. Genealogically Defined.

4) Sarah Lillian Pinder (Pinder-514) Added parents, birth, marriages, children and death. Genealogically Defined.

5) Samuel Pinder (Pinder-512) Added parents, birth, occupations, and death. Never married. Genealogically Defined.

6) Susanna White (White-7618) Added parents, birth, brothers, sisters, and death. Never married, died young. Genealogically Defined.

7) Samuel Levis Jr (Levis-118) Added parents, birth, marriages, children and death. Genealogically Defined.

8) Samuel Pennock (Pennock-109) Added Royal Ancestors, parents, birth, brothers, sisters, and death. Genealogically Defined.

9) Samuel Pennock (grandson) (Pennock-384) Created first American mowing machine. Added Royal Ancestors, parents, birth, brothers, sisters, and death. Genealogically Defined.

10) Samuel Martin (Martin-29665) Added parents, birth, brother, marriage and death. Genealogically Defined.

11) Silas Stoddard (Stoddard-1211)  Added parents, birth, brother, sisters and death. Never married, died young. He was 4 years old Genealogically Defined.

7.  Siméon Volant dit Dechamplain (4th great-grand uncle): Not started

8.  Simon Aubry (7th great-grandfather): Not started

9.  Samuel Lavoie: Biography written

What do you think, Greg...if their name was Marie-Scholastique at birth, but they went by Scholastique, should this count as an S name?  If this were the case, I would have quite a few Quebecois names to add!  :-)
I think the name should be considered Scholastique, not Marie Scholastique.  There was a period in the late 19th century through the mid-20th century in Quebec where nearly all baptismal names were Marie-Middle-First, Marie-First-Middle, or Marie-First for girls and Joseph-Middle-First, Joseph-First-Middle, or Joseph-First for boys.  To be literal would be to make 90+% of the given names either M or J, when in fact most did not actually use those names in practice.

I have this issue with a couple of my entries this month.  Sara Volant dit Dechamplain was born Marie Sara but never used the name later.  Interestingly, Sara Hambelton was baptized without Marie but would have it tacked on for no particular reason on her marriage record (her burial record omits it).

Of course, Anne will be scoring entries for this month-it would be good to run this by her for confirmation.

I will participate again this time, I love these challenges. I will start with one of my favorite family tree names:

1. Shubal Scudder Merritt Van Wagoner (1877-1967): DEFINED

2. Sophia Wilbur Van Wagoner (1866-1938): DEFINED

3. Shubalscudder Merritt Van Wagoner, Jr. (1908-1945): DEFINED (he went by Merritt for obvious reasons!)

4. Susie Moseman Rose (1847-1928): DEFINED  (from GEDCOM mess to bio, woohoo!)

I clearly won't get through this many people but wanted to take the chance to scour my watchlist and find overlooked profiles:

Next candidates: Sarah Albertson, Sarah Van Wagoner, Susan Batton, Stephen Wilbur Van Wagoner, Sarah Jane Dutcher Allen, Sarah Alice Wilbur Bigelow, Sarah Van Wagoner Bowman, Sarah Ann Marsh Brown, Sarah Sisson Case, Stefano Colletti, Sylvia Perkins Dunker, Sarah Wisner, the original Shubal Merritt

Priority Because Unsourced or Needs GEDCOM Cleaning: Sarah Goodrich, Santi Cascio, Santo Casico, Soloman Van Wagoner, Stephen Edward Dussault, Susannah Maxwell, Sally Merritt, Samuel Wilbur

I wrote this one awhile ago but forgot to add links: Seth Whitmore

Hi Laura, go to family search and do a search for "Taylor" 1779-1790, parents John Taylor, Susanna Cook. There's a whole family bpt Octagon Presbyterian, that includes Sarah and most of her siblings (no Phillip). Try looking for a marriage for Taylor and Cook, but family search just told me to try again in a few minutes.
Thanks, Anne. I'll look into that. Do you sometimes get the feeling that half the world is on Family Search? I've been getting that message a lot lately. (And as much as I'd like to be a Laura, my parents called me Laurie Anne. I take comfort in it being the "ie." rather than "I" spelling with a heart over the "I")
Well, that was a good exercise. I tend to trust the Wikipedia pages these days, but in this case, there was an error on the birthdate of one of her brothers: a birthdate that was actually a christening date. Lesson learned.

Laurie, 2 more  this month "People born in October  will get you to 50

LOL, thanks for the i.e.! My Dad was born in October, so will definitely sign up for this month's challenge. Thanks for the reminder.

Here's one that has caused a lot of problems for some people.

Susanna (Foster) White (Foster-14715) - She is mistakenly listed as the daughter of Jonas Humphrey. In Jonas Humphrey's 12 Mar 1662 will he lists Susanna as his daughter bequeathing to "my daughter Susanna White, wife of Nicholas White" a token 10s
