Hey!

I am trying to figure out if this guy, Benjamin Smart, took part in the Revolutionary war. Evidence on Family Search indicates he might have been. But, I don't entirely trust that site. Can someone confirm/deny?

Thanks!

Dear Chris,

I looked in the DAR Patriots list.  There is no Benjamin Smart recognized there.  Two Calebs, one Moses, and one Winthrop SMART patriot ancestors listed from New Hampshire.

Can someone check from the SAR?  -NGP
A Moses Smart was his brother. I wonder if someone combined the profiles on F.S. Wouldn't be the first time....

I would trust familysearch.org . on this, but it's up to you.

Frank, you rock! Thanks!

I just have issues with FamilySearch because there's zero moderation of profiles. Searching for stuff is easy and great. Got a ton of info. There's just no one minding the store.

If you ever want to contact them there are several ways to do it. I contacted them about the spelling of my g grandfather's first name which was corrected. I probably clicked on   Contact Us   for the first name problem.

Sounds good. I'll keep it in mind. =D

In: Hammond, Isaac, compiler. State of New Hampshire, Rolls of the Soldiers of the Revolutionary War 1775- May 1777 etc  Concord, NH, 1885. See: Provincial and State Papers, Volume 14  at https://books.google.com/books?id=yfE7AAAAIAAJ&dq=American+revolution%3A+Smart%2C+Benjamin%2C+Rockingham%2C+NH&q=smart#v=snippet&q=smart&f=false

There is a Benjamin Smart of Epping, Rockingham, aged 38 in 1775: on
Captain James Norris' Co;. 9th Poor's Regiment. pp. 116 roster : 616 pay

There is also a Benjamin Smart on other rosters, but doesn't show age or town. Ft. Washington:  p. 227 roster, p 257 pay: p. 472 petition

Benjamin Smart of Poplin p. 565

1778: Capt Norris Co./Enoch Poor's Regient  again, shows Benjamin Smart - no age/town p. 616

Then that's gotta be him!

The same text shows Benjamin Smart served during the expedition to Crown Point in 1762.  Sometimes - if you look for texts of the ''History of the ( correct town, NH'' (I don't know where he may have lived) you can ascertain, that the service relates to the individual.

Right. He was born in Raymond, NH, by the way.
