Can you provide any first names or time frame, birth, marriage and or death year?
Sullivan was originally north Kerry.
I have nothing on Sullivan's except my Great Granddad Richard Sullivan from Kentucky. Still waiting on some information about other family members but don't know when I'll get it. My cousin was in Kerry and met relatives but didn't get any names!!!! I hope to find them...

I think that Marion Sullivan and his wife Ella who live next door in the 1920 census are Richard's parents. They were born in Kentucky.

Marion's calculated date of birth swings widely from census to census eg 1910 and 1930.

I'm not sure that would be Richards parents. His daughter, my Grandmother was born in 1914. I'm still waiting on information from family members about him. I still don't have any information about the Arthur line from Ireland either. This is very difficult for me without names and dates.
Through exhaustive research we have found that Marion ( Marien) and Ella were Richard Nicholas Sullivan's parents!! Some records have Marion's name spelled Marien so we don't know the correct spelling until we find a birth certificate. Marion and Ella were my Great Great Grandparents. Now, according to three census records, It has Marion's parents from Virginia and Ireland. We know for certain we have Irish roots and Sullivan blood in Kerry...we just have to link it. Would you by any chance know where Marion's parents are from or any other relatives?? I thank you so much for the information you provided previously...Julie

Hi Julie,

Which census has one of Marion's parents as coming from Ireland? The only other one I have seen is the 1900 Census which has them both coming from Virginia.

The real key would be the marriage or death record of the parent coming from Ireland. This might say who their parent's were, in particular what their mother's maiden name was. If you're very luck you might end up looking in somewhere like Killarney where they have 8000 Sullivan baptisms between 1785 and 1850. The Irish Genealogy site has 110,000 pre-1850 Sullivan baptisms in Cork and Kerry but for most parishes it's difficult to get beyond 1825.

Speaking of maiden names, Richard's brother's marriage record shows his mother Ella's maiden name to be Tivener - see link

All the best, John

Thank you, John!!! I will see what I can come up with. The website I saw parents were from Ireland was MyHeritage...2 said Virginia and 1 was Ireland. I'll keep digging!!!
The website was family search, John...sorry. My sister and I have looked in Virginia, WVa., Kentucky and Ohio for Marion Sullivan...Nothing!!! So, if he did come over from Ireland...I have nothing to go on as of yet. Will keep looking...

There is a well sourced family tree on FamilySearch.

The Arthur side goes back to William Arthur who was born in Virginia in 1770.

If you've got a (free) FamilySearch login then look at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/L4B6-TGD/details?spouse=L4B6-TNF

There seem to be a few people working on this tree with some quite recent updates.

This tree doesn't go back beyond Marion on the Sullivan side. They have a date of birth from his draft registration card - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYY8-3S1C?i=4594&cc=1968530. They haven't added Marion's marriage record - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XD4S-FZN This shows his father to be William. In which case this is the family's 1880 Census record showing Jennie Wiley? as his mother. William was born in Virginia in about 1845.

This is probably Marion's brother James - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NMMY-BG3

EDIT: William's parent's were both born in VA so we are back to the 1820's or earlier before we get an Irish born ancestor.

Hi John...yes, I have found William and Jennie!! I've also been able to go further back...I have names just haven't been able to post anything on here yet. I've been so busy...hopefully this weekend I will be able to get names up on Wiki...I was so happy to find all the names that I did...still nothing back to Ireland yet. Will keep searching...thanks for all your help!!!

Arthur

SDB Popularity Ranking: 442

This unusual and interesting name is the subject of some controversy regarding its origins. Certainly, it derives from the Celtic personal name "Arthur", but there is some doubt as to the etymology of the name. It is thought to be composed of "art", in Old Welsh "arth", meaning "bear", with the Old Welsh "gwr", meaning "hero". The name development includes: Robertus Arcturi (1197, Herefordshire); Adam Arthur (1246, Lancashire); Adam Arthur (1246, Lancashire); and Henry Artur (1327, Somersetshire). The Old Norse personal name "Arnthorr", derived from "arn", eagle, and "Thorr", the name of the god of thunder, has been absorbed into the Celtic name "Arthur", for centuries now associated with the historical 6th Century British leader who fought victorious battles against the Saxon invaders. The modern forms of the name are Arthur, Arter, Artharg, Arthurs and Arthars, the last two being the patronymic forms, meaning "son of Arthur". One Mathew Arthur of Plimpton, aged 18 yrs., departed from Plymouth in February 1634, aboard the "Bonaventure" bound for St. Christophers. He was one of the earliest namebearers to settle in the New World Colonies. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Geoffrey Arthur, which was dated 1135, in "Records of Oseney Abbey", Oxfordshire, during the reign of King Henry 1, known as "The Lion of Justice", 1100 - 1135. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Sullivan

SDB Popularity Ranking: 1349

The great and illustrious Irish family of (O) Sullivan descend from Eoghan Mor, father of the famous Olioll Olum, 3rd Century King of Munster. The Mac Carthy's, O'Keeffes and O'Callaghans were the other leading families of the Munster Eoghanacht i.e., descended from the above mentioned Eoghan, but (O)Sullivan remains the most widespread surname in Munster. The surname is an anglicized form of the Gaelic "O'Suileabhan". The Gaelic prefix "O" indicates "male descendant of", plus the personal byname Suileabhan, variously interpreted as "hawk-eyed" or "one-eyed".Several members of the clan were lords of the territory near Cahir, (Co. Tipperary), prior to the Anglo-Norman invasion. From 1200 on, they spread to Counties Cork and Kerry dividing into two main septs - O'Sullivan Mor and O'Sullivan Beare. The senior chieftain of the former sept had his stronghold at Kenmare Bay, Co. Kerry, and the latter chieftain was lord of Beare and Bantry. Owen Rua O'Suileabhan (1748-1784), was a great lyric poet, and Sir Arthur Sullivan, (1842-1900), of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, was of Irish descent. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Donal O'Sullivan Beare, which was dated 1560-1618, hero of the Siege of Dunboy, recorded in "Records of Dunboy, Bantry Bay", during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st, known as "Good Queen Bess", 1558 - 1603. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

There were quite a few Sullivans near Lough Corrib in Co. Galway. I've made little headway tracing that side of my family among them but I see their names frequently in the parish registers.

Just saw this . . . while I don't have my maternal Arthur family on here, and I've only so far put a few of my paternal Reed ancestors, I do have an extensive genealogy for the Arthurs.  They are from Pert, Scotland but migrated sometime before 1673 to Cullybackey, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.  My branch left Northern Ireland for Virginia soon after the immigration to Northern Ireland but many of the family stayed in County Antrim.  I've not filed in any of the "Old Country" details on either of my Reed or Arthur ancestors, so don't have much detail.  This may not be any use to you, but thought I'd send if for nothing else general info. It is my understanding, also, that almost all of the Arthur Clan members--no matter where they may have immigrated to in Ireland are from Scotland (lowlands).

Hi Katherine...I'm interested to know who your Arthur clan is!! So far all I have is William Arthur born 1770 I think. Anyway...he's my 4th Great Granddad. I have an Arthur book starting with him...will have approximate date of birth for you later...
