merging profiles with one being a guest.

I have taken this question to my supervisor concerning requests for merging two profiles with one being a guest.  The name is the same as well as the dates.  It seems strange that a profile has already been created for this person and yet a guest is welcomed with the same information.  Now, I can understand if this is a family member, but I am not able to comprehend why a profile has already been created and then a full member requests a merge with a guest's profile.  Is this the format to welcome a family member?  Surely, there must be a different way of doing things.  It would save a lot of steps.

Kirk-1072 and Kirk-753 are the two profiles in question)

Well, I don't know if it's that strange. It looks like the older profile was created by her sister, and I can imagine that on registering for this site, she didn't see that the existing profile, which is private, was her own.

And because the older profile is still private, I bet she didn't have a chance to merge, or was not informed on how to do that yet, so in my view this duplicate was sort of to be expected. Happened with a cousin of mine too.

Since the email address is not confirmed, it looks like we can't promote her to full member yet, which is what I normally do when I meet a cousin on this site.
