You seem correct (there is a slim chance this one died and was replaced by a brother with exactly the same initials exactly one year later but not likely).  Here's the 1870 census:

Vincent has your answer. Looking at the census image, he was 8 months old when the census was enumerated 9 June 1870. That is closer to his birth than what his descendants remembered for his death information.
