Thank you for hosting Charlotte, it's going to be a great weekend!

I made one of the dishes Eddie described last weekend and boy was it good.  I've eaten leftovers 3 times.  Can hardly wait to see what's on the menu this time.
Oh wow nice! :) I just hope I find out before I go home tonight so I can get stuff. LOL
Hi all. Thanks for hosting this weekend Charlotte
Thanks for hosting, Charlotte!  :)
Thanks Charlotte for all you do~!~  (that is my version of open arms for a hug!)
Thanks for hosting this time Charlotte :-)
Always like to see whats happening on "Weekend Chat"......Thank you for hosting...
Thank you for hosting this week Charlotte
Susan, where did your funny post about your dog go?  I hope you didn't remove it because I was joking.  I think it is funny your dog has the same as mine!  I loved your story!

Thank you for hosting Charlotte !

Thank you for hosting the Weekend Chat Charlotte. Now lets have fun!!
Welcome, welcome! :) Thank you Keith for asking me to host. :) My phone has never been so busy! LoL
You know it is fall in Flagstaff , As when you smell Hatch Green Chili roasting.  Gonna buy enough chili to last until next fall.  Make rellenos , green chili pork ,  and Navajo tacos.  Navajo fry bread , tortillas.  Then on to tamales , sweet and hot for Chirstmas.

When I get home from shopping I will be dumping MASSIVE amounts of cinnamon on massive red and blank ant holes.  It kills them dead and is not toxic to dogs , cats , horse's , fowl , squirrels , bunnies , pack rats ( my dog ARE toxic to them) .   Dye my white hair some mild version of red that it used to be.  And track wives of Thomas Gray.  I am working with Bree Ogle .  Having a great time working with her.  Hoping to stay on track , found he has connections to 2 others up my direct line.  Y'all have a good weekend.
Thanks for hosting, it's a great long weekend!
Thank you for hosting Charolette. Also welcome every one to the weekend chat.

I just want to thank everyone for having come to the Weekend Chat while I was hosting! :)

For those who got Labor Day off hope it was relaxing. :)

I went out to Hobby Lobby to get shirts for Lucy, Emma and I; then ordered the vinyl when I got home to make shirts for the SAT with our bibs. Also, had a nice cook out lunch with my family while watching "Baywatch". The movie was hilarious! Now I've just been slowly working on adding the unsourced templates to my profiles.

Thank you Charlotte for hosting this Weekends Chat. Let me know how soon you want to do another Weekend Chat! As for a relaxing weekend I would have to say no as I worked on painting a bath room and yard work today. Your like my wife as she goes to Hobby Lobby quite often or as I call it the junk store.

Oh I rarely go to Hobby Lobby. :) LOL But the do have adult sizes for shirts of most colors. :)  Here's a mock up of what I'll be creating over the weekend:

Very nice and well done! I signed up for the Source a Thon also. Not sure how much time I will have but will do my best.

TGIF! Started it off with an early morning to Employee Health to give shot records, etc. for the new job. BUT I messed up my alarms & had to reschedule for Wednesday. :(

Signed up for the 2017 Source-a-thon!! Go Roses! Not sure I'll be able to keep my #2 place from last year though. Don't think two weeks after starting a new job it would be a good idea to ask for that Monday off. LoL :( What is exciting is having a quote in the Press Release!! Feel free to ask for tips. :)

Hoping to go to First Friday Wine Tasting after work as it has been a while. :)

Has anyone ever tried Second Life? My cousin Kaite went to a genealogy class on it! How cool is that?!! Told Emma about it and last night instead of doing stuff on our to-do list we played. LoL You know trying to find that perfect free outfit. I totally want my SL avatar's hair!  Friend me: shockrina

by Charlotte Shockey G2G6 Pilot (983k points)
please don't drive after tasting. we don't you nor your family and friends hurt. Have fun.n
Been working on new puzzles for weekend chat, the new Arthurian legend project, and trying to get more of my folks entered into WikiTree plus babysitting for my 4 month old Granddaughter.  She is so darn cute but does take me off of WikiTree for great stretches of time during the day.  She is still a little snuggle bum and likes to be held and likes a lot of interaction.  I try to get some solo playtime in for her with varying success.  Yesterday I gave her one of those sorting balls and she had a blast rolling it around and finally got it open and then had a field day chewing on all the shapes...  This is why we do WikiTree isn't it... to leave something for our grandchildren and great grandchildren etc...  CORRECTION she is 5 months as of last week.. duh.. next time I blink she will probably be driving!

Happy long weekend for the USA with Labor Day being Monday and my 41st wedding anniversary!  Great fun this weekend!
Happy Annniversary Laura! :)
Thanks Charlotte.  Ron is my best friend!  Great guy!
That's awesome! I keep hoping to find me one of those. My first time around was a dud. LOL :)
OMG I fell down the SL rabbit hole about ten years ago. Linden Lab, who own SL, even head hunted me and flew me out to San Francisco for an interview. It was between me and another person. I didn't get the job but the whole experience was pretty amazing. I'll have to see if I can find my old avatar... Madelena Rossini was her name. I think they've changed how they do names these days.
That's so cool. We should totally message you for SL tips, Susie :-)  I can't seem to get anything to move faster than the speed of sludge.  I think my internet is too slow.
She sent me her username. Told her yours too. :)

Your 2017 Source-a-thon goal should be for first pace! Your just that good!! Late to work they will understand. You did not post a link for what ever Second Life is! Now time to check out the food post!

LoL David.... :) I wish they would understand. As for the link... hard to do from a phone. :) I'll add it when I get on my laptop along with a photo of my avatar that wasn't working earlier. :)
Welcome everyone to the weekend chat.

I hope it goes well, How ever I wished my ged com was loaded on the tree. (BUM)

Have you already done GEDCOM Compare? :)
I understand GEDCOM's are on hold as WikiTree is updating the GEDCOM process making it easier to upload/import.
It was my impression they aren't going to upload any GEDCOMs going forward. That the process will be different than just uploading the way it is now. I'm very intrigued. I've avoided GEDCOMs because I've seen what a mess they can be but I may change my mind with the new process.
Hello to everyone and welcome to the weekend chat. How are they planning to do the GEDCOMS from now on and what will be different about. I  didn't know they were thinking about not going to upload any GEDCOM'S going forwards. I am intrigued also. I hope the process will be made easier to upload/import.
The way I understand the new GEDCOM process is that you can still "upload" one but it will not create profiles for every name listed, they will somehow be added one by one using something similar to WikiTreeX.
Right, so it isn't actually uploading the GEDCOM in the way we think of it, it is just allowing you to use the GEDCOM to create individual profiles. As a frequent profile cleaner-upper-sourcer, this makes me incredibly happy.
What do you mean by they will be somehow be added one by one using something similar to WikiTreeX? And what do you mean by WikiTreeX?

It's getting cooler here in Canada - we hit single digit Celsius temperatures here this morning! Haven't had the A/C on in a week. It's very refreshing, though I have to remember this means we're closer to snow!

Added my first Notable to WikiTree: James Holman, the Blind Traveler. He was the first blind person to circumnavigate the globe and he did it in the 1830s! Truly inspiring. The article I read about him that pushed me to create his profile is the 2nd Source on his profile. I highly suggest everyone read it. As a blind person myself, even I can't imagine doing what he did. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Holman-2184

I added in his parents and siblings in an attempt to connect him to the big tree, but I got stumped. The surname "Holman" is a lot more common than I anticipated and I have no clue how to tell for sure where any of his siblings ended up. I only managed to tentatively figure out where his sister Harriet ended up since her name was a bit less common. But she married into a common surname (Andrews) and no idea beyond there. Hopefully someone in the future will be able to connect this amazing man to the big tree!

I've lost a bit of steam on my Lapish One Name Study. I've gotten to the point of trying to backtrack and connect siblings and it's rather difficult. How many John Lapish son of John Lapish can there be? Soooo many! I've also noticed there are some I've found in the 1851 Census that somehow were not showing up in the 1841 Census - are there a bunch missing that had a wrong spelling in the 1841 Census entry? I may try to go through the 1851 Census, as well, to ensure I have all the families listed in WikiTree.
by Kristen Louca G2G6 Mach 3 (32.8k points)
Sometimes when I get stumped I take a step back & work on something else for a while before coming back & sometimes finding what I was looking for. :)
I have some families that span centuries with the same names... and to make it even more confusing there are cousins, aunts or uncles, grandparents all with the same names.  Thank goodness for ID numbers in gedcom programs!

Thank you Kristen for creating the profile for James Holman, the Blind Traveler. Now I will have to go to the profile and read the story. Speaking of the name John I have many ancestors with that name and understand how hard it is to short them all out. I am still trying to connect my line with some in Maryland.

Laura ,  it makes me crazy in my father's family.  10 generations ,  same name.  My aunt married a man who's name was the same as his direct ancestors all the way back to one of the signers of the Declaration of Indendance.  The signer didn't have an heir , so he told his sister Her child could be his heir if she named her son and fhis future generations after him.  All the way down to my first cousin and his son. On my mother's side William Grant and wives by the name Isobel Isabelle are making Feel like someone braided my brain.
I am jealous of your weather....it is so hot in California...new records set all over the place.
What a fascinating story about the Blind Traveler!  Great update!
Talking about same names all the way down the line, and since we do seem to like our pets... My sister names her dogs Tiger, everyone of them, not necessarily  the same breed but always the same name.  I think she is on Tiger 14. Just thought I would add that.
Welcome everyone to the weekend chat. Also ditto to what Laura said, and Trudy also.
Nicole ,  a woman who names her dogs Lucky and Blue.  Only those two names Asked me why I name my dogs such weird names.  Thalia , Lael , Persephone , Torquin , Duncan , Vala , Arista . Other such names. I cant image not.  My name is not rare but it is not common. And I named my son Asa Jordan.  Come to find out there are many Asas in my father's line.
Interesting story, thanks for sharing. That is the one thing I have really enjoyed about joining WikiTree. All the new information I have learned about famous people and how they have contributed to history. Thanks...

So, Sunday week ago, my car was stolen and wrecked during a police chase. Totalled. Old car, liabilty-only insurance. I been riding the bus. Thursday night, last run and I'm the only passenger left. I get to nibbling some string cheese. The bus driver is designated BD.

Bd- you can't do that  (accent, not one of us !)

Me- do what?

Bd- eat that.

Me- show me in the American constitution where it says I can't eat string cheese on a bus.

(his face wiggles around)

He - I don't know this constitution. I am not American. I am from Georgia

Me- well except for 1861 to 1865 Georgia's American

Bd- no not redneck  from the real Georgia used to be Soviet. I wanted to emigrate to Canada but my wife has damn cousins so we had to come here.

Me- gee that's too bad. Canada's a great country

Bd- I told her but well you know women

Me- you want some string cheese?

Bd- okay yeah sure
by Eddie King G2G6 Pilot (699k points)
Thanks for the Giggles. Sorry about your car.
Your a riot Eddie, thanks for the story. Sorry about your totaled car, just look at the money you saved in insurance.
Hahahahahahha David you about had me on the floor laughing!!

So then, how did the rest of the bus trip pan out??

You go Eddie!
Let us know if, the larger the man, the larger the finger to be wrapped around by those little cuties we are seeing in G2G.  I see a great future for those little girls.
hahaha I love the bus driver story - what a great scene!
Part of the reason I am on WikiTree....I LOVE PEOPLE!
I second that Robin :-)
Ditto to what everyone said and welcome to the weekend chat everyone.

Well Friday is upon us the 1st day of September and time is flying

Happy National Gyro Day

Here are today’s five thing to know about Gyros:

  1. A gyro  is a dish of meat roasted on a vertical spit. It is usually served as a sandwich, also called a gyros, with tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce, wrapped in pita bread.
  2. To make gyros, pieces of meat are placed on a tall vertical spit, which turns in front of a source of heat, usually an electric broiler.
  3.  If the meat is not fatty enough, strips of fat are added so that the roasting meat remains always moist and crisp.
  4. The rate of roasting can be adjusted by varying the strength of the heat and the distance between the heat and the meat, allowing the cook to adjust to varying rates of consumption.
  5. The outside of the meat is sliced vertically in thin, crisp shavings when done. It is generally served in an oiled, lightly grilled piece of pita, rolled up with various salads and sauces.
by Anthony McCabe G2G6 Pilot (384k points)

We have to watch a movie set in Greece if we're making gyros

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055719/

Watch here !

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3BhY9h3G21E

Now to either go to the mall or Arby's for some gyros!
Maybe we should do Gyros for Heros!  There are a lot of them right now~
Love a great Gyro, Steve. Have not had one in some time. Way to set the mood with the movie, Eddie.
Gyros are so yummy if they are good quality.  Gotta get it from a real Greek place.  We used to live near one.  They used lamb and Greek yogurt. And the bread was to die for. (not that I eat gluten or dairy anymore!)
Food and more food, now I am hungry! I will have to go get a Gyro soon.
I got mine after wine tasting with my friend. Now I want to sleep instead of Greet. LoL
You are making work very difficult tonight talking about Gyros.
My local favorite food truck is called Gyro Stop, the guy who runs the truck is from Georgia (just like Eddie's bus driver), not the state....the country.   He went to Greece before coming to the US.   Great story.
Yum!  Looks delicious!
In Austrtalia we call those Yiros.
They are yummy!  gosh I wish there was more multi cultural restaurants down here in RGV (Texas) not that I don't enjoy Mexican food but hey its nothing compared to any where north of here ..especially where im from (Ottawa, Ont.) :-( I'll be keeping tuned on this chat !
OH Wow speaking of Ottawa, I just checked out the Ottawa Citizen and there's an article on shawarmas !! Now I'm craving gyros, shawarmas anything but a taco

   "Today is"  (how approprate!!)

Food banks across the country help some of the 42 million men, women and children who struggle with putting food on the table. [And most urgent this month is the crisis in Texas from Hurricane Harvey, where so many people are homeless now and are in shelters. These shelters depend on donations from local food banks.] Help a neighbor, a friend, coworker or a child by making a donation or volunteering at your local food bank. Food banks take nonperishable food items and cash donations every day. Check their needs list for the fresh items they are seeking.

What a great idea!
Thank you for letting us know! :)
Great idea!
It is already done in our area. Even the Boy Scouts do a food drive for the local food bank.
Ditto to what everyone since I know since I have a cousin in Houston, Texas with 3 older daughters that out of college now. Welcome everyone to the weekend chat.
Food Drives are a very important part of the community. Everyone should get involved in them, you never know when something is going to happen and you might need help from one. They provide such a valuable service to those in need, being retired military I always give to the local military base to help the young military service members who need help. Because I remember when I was in their situation many years ago.

Greetings everyone!! For those in the United States, we have been watching and praying for those in Texas dealing with the results of Hurricane Harvey, the worst disaster in that area for sure!!

From that storm comes remnants of Tropical storm Harvey right here in my state of "Tennessee" causing flooding and dangerous driving conditions....

Some water rescues occurring in areas where creeks are overflowing, and people being evacuated from homes. Nothing compared to Houston but still, people are suffering from the reality that their home may not be fit to live in for quite some time.

For me myself, right now we are under watches flood warnings in Sumner County, Tennessee. Last night we had heavy downpours  and a tornado warning in nearby Davidson county, Nashville, Tennessee. Note: Some of my neighbors don't have power and my lights blink every now and then. Anyway, I will try to keep up with our chat but if you don't see me for a while that may be what happened!!

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Thanks everyone for your "stay safe" wishes!  So far so good, our lake near where I live looks awful but hasn't flooded out to lower ground so far. And the rain has settled down to just a drizzle, I am so glad of that!!

Glad the weather is better Dorothy

Still wishing you a stay safe, but glad to hear  "so far so good".
I have been looking at the path, my area is prone to flooding. Last big ones were 2011 and 2006. Some of the flood walls are old and not in great shape.

Lexie needed a friend

500px-Photos_Experiments-152.jpg

Hope everyone is safe, please everyone be careful and mindful of the weather. Wish I was back home in Texas to help, but I have another month or so before I get to return from my job in Sri Lanka.
Awww how cute!! Thanks Doug!!!  that is so awesome!!!
What a cute picture Doug! and hope all stays well for you Dorothy!
Ditto what every one said. Also welcome everyone especially from my state Tennessee and to my state Tennessee to the weekend chat.
This is so cute Doug gorgeous work

Happy September to All!

I've been a little scarce on Wikitree this week....landscape design season has begun. I have been working on a genealogy book for my 2nd cousin, though.

Also, I figured out how to make art work featuring my cats using my landscape design software....very cool!

Have a great week.

Since I'm a cat lover that is awesome! :)
Gorgeous photo!
Beautiful!
like the photo....
Gorgeous cat I just love cats
What a beautiful cat and surroundings!!!  Picture/postcard perfect!!
When is landscape design season?  I would have thought it would be mostly in spring and summer?
Where I live it is year round, but peaks occur in the spring & fall.
Ah.  That makes sense.
Ditto to what everyone said and said especially to Doug. Doug that looks like my first cat that I had when I was child and when I was an adult watch her die when she turned 20 years  in 1984. She was tailess because it got chopped in a car engine where she had gotten in when she was a young cat.

Thanks for hosting Charlotte.

It is gray and cloudy, but much cooler in Virginia Beach. The news from Harvey is just devastating, and I certainly hope that all those in its path are doing okay (including the flooding in Tennessee). We continue to watch Irma, already a category 3; it is unknown if this storm will approach the Gulf, the east coast of the US, or veer off into the Atlantic.

It's been an interesting genealogy week, as I have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to identify the descendants of my second great granduncles, to at least include their children on WikiTree as some cousin bait.

My first cousin is on a road trip from Central NY to California, doing genealogy along the way. She stopped in northeast Iowa and did find that our great grandmother (Emma Unknown) is buried in an unmarked grave. From there she traveled a bit south and got birth certificates for two of our aunts (with two more different spellings for our grandmother's name!). She will visit our newly found half-cousin in California -- the daughter of our half uncle who did not think she had any family on her father's side until she started doing genealogy. Finally, she will visit grandchildren of our grandfather's brother in Colorado who have been doing paper genealogy and may have the old Scranton family bible.

I did my first table in a profile today. I'm just getting ready to do my grandmother, since her Research Notes will certainly need a table to list the different spelling for her first name (Ottilia) along with dates and sources. So far we have well more than 10 different spellings.

Wishing all a good week.

Just finished shredding the last 6 boxes at work. Ouchie, somehow I got paper cuts. :'( Totally out of commission for the weekend! LoL
by Charlotte Shockey G2G6 Pilot (983k points)
Poor baby :-(
I know sucks! LOL
I hate shredding paper....Need to get those magical gloves to protect your fingers.
If I still had tons of boxes to go I might have looked into that. :) Glad they had a heavy duty shredder though... fills big black garbage bags. :)

It is a little cold here for this time of the year but we went to Senior day at the 190th Geauga County Fair This morning. My father is 87 but he walked around a lot of the fair and saw a lot of the fair just fine. We left about noon and took him out to lunch before taking him home.

Sounds like you guys had a great time! :)
Charlotte,

We did have a good time. One of my grandsons went with us and took some pictures. I took some pictures of a building that used to be a station for the old interurban railroad but is now the fair office. Today all those over 65 got in free as well as all veterans and from 9 till 2 they had a senior hangout offering free coffee and doughnuts and all of the local healthcare service providers had booths nearby with a lot of free stuff. After we got back we all took naps, even the 15 year old. Tomorrow we are going to a Celebration of Life at the Yacht Club for my aunt who died recently so it will be a big family gathering and the chance to catch up with some family I have not seen for quite some time and possibly get some more pictures.
That definitely sounded like a fun filled day and I probably would have napped also. :)

Glad you'll be able to hang out with family even if it's not under ideal circumstances. That seems to be the only time I see certain family. :(
Ditto to what everyone said especially Charlotte it seems that way for my mother and dad side of the family. Also welcome everyone to the weekend chat.

Hey everybody!

Not much going on.  The weather is here, wish y'all were gorgeous.  No new rabbit holes to report.  Anticipating the new GEDCOM deal with eagerness and some trepidation.

A great weekend to all!

Good afternoon!

It's very cool here today, even for New England. It's been that way all summer though. The number of days we've had 80° or above was very few.

Hope everyone else is enjoying a few more warm days before Fall, I think it's come early to Newport.
by Deb Durham G2G Astronaut (1.1m points)
I'm hoping for fall days. LoL :) We might get one or two then off to winter we go or a mix with summer temps.
I will be glad when fall arrives as I like the cooler weather.
Welcome everyone to the weekend chat.

Hello Wikitreers!

Well this morning was one of them days where I decided to take a break from my addiction. I took some time and went out to the lake and enjoyed the fresh almost cold air but none the less refreshing.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words so I reckon I will let you be the judge (excuse the bad quality)

Cute boat!! :) Always good to enjoy a nice day outside.
Not mine just one I saw that I figured was worth a snapshot. Just for the memory
Ooh ok! :)
I take it the red tug is yours?  oh... what a cool little craft.  She is gorgeous.!!  Enjoy your time on the water and be safe.
oops just read - not your tug.  Does not change that she is gorgeous.
Yeah I reckon I never saw such creativity.
Thanks for sharing the picture of the little tug boat. Some one put a lot of work into the little tug boat.

Is it Friday already?!  I have spent the last several days being busy busy busy.

I have geared up my Source-A-Thon team with a new Team page (Go Roses!).  We have a great team line up so far--all registered.  Have you registered in G2G for the Source-A-Thon?  It will be the weekend of September 30-Oct. 2.

Also, some  big changes in the works for the DNA Project.  Aleš is helping to create some new suggestions regarding DNA information so members can fix any information themselves that may be typos or outdated information.  Yay!  I love those error reports.  Ahem.  I meant suggestions.

Summer has started late here.  We usually get about 6 weeks of summer in July-August, but it didn't start until August this year.  We are also having a record dry spell.  Praying for rain and cooler weather.  Isn't it fall yet? I live for rain!

I forgot to say, thanks for hosting Charlotte.  One of my most favoritest people!!
Welcome! :) You forgot to mention figuring out Second Life! ;) hahahaha I'm sure Texas & Louisiana would love to send their rain your way. :)

Go Roses!!
I am trying to forget about it!
HAHAHA I'm about to get on there soon to see about adding Susie as a friend. :)
Welcome everyone to the weekend chat.

My wife, two of her sisters and a cousin flew down to Phoenix this AM to visit another cousin for several days.  You know what that means?  I get to eat all of the things that my wife doesn't care for ... lol.  So, tonight it's linguine and clams.  There's one store in town that has little neck clams that are about twice the size at other stores (like 3" versus 1.5").  I'll be making fresh linguine in a bit.  Maybe some dipping bread with olive oil and Sicilian spices ... and a Pinot Grigo ... now I'm getting hungry!
by Bob Jewett G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
I'm hungry & l've never had clams! LOL
You get to cook and eat all the things you like while the wife is away.
hi hi Bob I really hope you will enjoy all the food you never get, you made me laugh

I am having a difficult time with the fact your dog is named Emma.  Every time I read the name, I think you are talking about me and I see the dog's picture.  LOL :-D
sorry about that Emma.
Now I also will think of Emma every time I see you post a picture of Emma the Dog! Our girl Sarah would have already shredded that doggy bed.
LOL David :-)
