How to properly record names at birth

+9 votes
I have had an extensive exchange on the matter with another wikitreer.  According to him we must modernize "last names at birth"  i..e "Auger" even when the birth certificate is clearly "Augé"; Also he insists that the "noms composés" should be hyphenated although I pointed to him my name is Michèle, Marie Madeleine officially without a hyphen.  I must know what  the proper procedure is so I can be confident of my work.  Also this procedure should be imparted to all to avoid errors such as double entries because of name differences.

Thank you

Je suis d'accord.  Not all French or French Canadian people are born with hyphenated names.  I have plenty of Quebecois family without.

And we never modernize the last name at birth!!  Goodness!  I agree 100% with Deb's answer below.

I am sending you a private message Michèle.
Please tell whoever that person was to look at this question and answers, and also to go look at Quebecois Project guidelines on names.  Hyphens are a VERY modern use for names.

If the name at birth was, Augé then that is what you use. If it later became Auger for that person, it can either be put in Current last name or other last names. You should always go with the birth record and the spelling at the time. The names should be entered according to the custom at the time and place of birth.

Help:Name Fields has a section on this very issue.

Exactly right Debbie. I am wondering if the alternate AKA's under first name and surname will default to the original profile when a search is being done.
