Stephen Gates, according to Wikitree, was born in about 1640 in Hingham, Massachusetts Bay, but he is shown as part of the PGM project. The NEHGS (Vital Records from The NEHGS Register (Vital Records from The NEHGS Register. Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2014. (Compiled from articles originally published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register.)  https://www.americanancestors.org/DB522/i/14267/163/264741357 Vol 120 (1966): 163) shows that he was the son of Stephen Gates, probably born in co. Norfolk, England, in about 1634.  He married Sarah Woodward of Watertown about 1664. He deposed in 1678, saying he was 44 years old, and in 1691, saying he was 57 years old.

His father came to New England in 1638, so he couldn't have been born in Hingham, Massachusetts, and the two depositions confirm that he was born about 1634.

Can we change the date and location of his birth?

Text that I have for him in my genealogy software, cut and pasted from Torrey's series of articles about the family states (omitting the list of children):

Stephen Gates(2), born probably in county Norfolk England about 1634. Died in Stow, Mass., 9 July 1707. Married, probably about 1664, Sarah Woodward of Watertown, Mass. (born 1642/3, died after 15 September 1707). He came to New England with his parents in 1638. After he came of age he resided in Lancaster, Cambridge, Boston, Marlborough, and Stow, Massachusetts.

Source: Clarence Almon Torrey, "Stephen Gates of Hingham, Lancaster, and Cambridge, Mass., and Some of his Descendants," in New. Eng. Hist. Gen. Register, Boston, MA: NEHGS: 120 (1966):161-70, 260-72; 121 (1967):45-54, 217-23, 250-60

Note: His mother's name was Anne Neave, not Anne Veare. (See his father's profile for the source of this.)

So, heck yes -- the birth data on that profiles should be corrected!

PS - The four-generation sequence of men named Stephen Gates was one of the first ancestral lines I investigated when I got engaged with the subject of genealogy. I guess I stayed away from these profiles after I joined WikiTree because the profiles had little relation to the data in my files, and I was intimidated by the long lists of sources and long lists of profile managers on some of the profiles.

See also: Harrison, Edward J. The English Origins of Stephen Gate, 1638 Immigrant to Massachusetts.  NEHGR: Vol. 160: p. 14    (2006)

Briefly: Stephen bp in Hingham, England 1597; married Anne ''Veare'' (sic) in England in 1628; migrated in 1638 on the Diligent, which confirms if their child was born/bp in 1634 - he would also have been born in England and emigrated.  .

I believe this is in Baptism in Reymerston, not far from Hingham also two other children of Steven and Anna baptised there

Norfolk : Reymerston : St Peter : Parish Register : "Parish Register" database, FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5818bde5e93790eca3be939a : viewed 3 May 2022) baptism Steven Gates 10 Aug 1634

That looks like good information -- particularly seeing (in a profile comment on this man's profile) that there is a record in the same parish for older sister Elizabeth that matches her other data, as well as a record for a child named Nathaniel who does not have a profile here.

Could you please add the biographical info and the other record details to the text of the profile?
Thank you, Ann Browning. I have added this information as a research note to Stephen's profile, attributed as your contribution. --Gene
Thanks Gene,

I only ran across this one as I’m transcribing john Atdam’s Will in he has Neave relations so was looking for Norfolk Neave family. Now whether there is a connection I don’t know I’m trying to find out.

Ann
Thank you!
