New Netherland settler to merge: Bogaert-65 (Cornelis Cornelisz Bogaert) [closed]

+6 votes

Cornelis Cornelisz Bogaert of Schoonrewoerd, NL has a duplicate that needs to be merged.

This is where things get rough as Cornelis lived in Albany, (which is a whole other planet when it comes to New Netherland) where there are no church records until 1683. In the Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts, van Laer says that Cornelis originally went by his patronymic but it is unclear how it was spelt, as van Laer normalized them all for sanity's sake. He says that Cornelis is probably also the Cornelis that went by the surname Vos, and that is highly likely as his son Jacob, who married a Quackenbosch, also used variants of Vos. Eventually Cornelis starts using Bogaert but it wasn't until much later as Janny Venema doesn't mention anyone using Bogaert in her book Beverwijck. It's the same for the early court record books of Albany.

For these reasons, I think Cornelis' name should just stay Bogaert until a baptism record is located for him. This is usually what happens with Albany folks. It looks like the Schoonrewoerd books start pretty late. Maybe the family has records at Leerdam or Vianen.

Are there any issues or concerns? If not, I'll proceed to merge the duplicate into Bogaert-65 in 30 days.

All we have for him so far is this info from the parenteel  (looks like that's also where the Colymans spelling of his wifes last name is coming from)

Cornelius Cornelisz Bogaert was born about 1630 in Schoonrewoerd (zui,NLD), son of Cornelius Theunisz in den Boogaert  and Beeltje Cornelisse. Cornelius died on 25 July 1665 in Albany abt 35 years of age. he was burried on 28 July 1665 in Albany. Cornelius married, about 24 years of age, about 1654 in Schoonrewoerd, Dirkje Pieters Colymans, abt 22 years of age. Dirkje was born abt 1632 in Schoonrewoerd. Dirkje died on 28 October 1665 in Albany abt.33 jaar age.

If the dates are a bit correct perhaps we can find something for him or them, because the Schoonrewoerd marriage records start from abt 1627 and Leerdam has records from about 1622 Vianen starts (baptisms) from 1612

But until we find a baptism or marriage record Bogaert is fine ;)

Janny Venema doesn't mention a Cornelis Bogaert but she mentiones a Cornelis Bogardus in the book, here (page 260) both Cornelis Vos and Cornelis Bogardus are mentioned and Cornelis Bogardus is also mentioned at page 261. But that Cornelis Bogardus was a stepbrother of Sijtje Roelofs the third daughter of Anneke Jans and Roelof Jans, so a son of Everardus Bogardus and Anneke Jans (page 245) and a different one. Perhaps it was a reason why Cornelis also used the name Vos, if in a town there were a few people with the same names (first name/patronymic/last name) sometimes people would use a different one to prevent confusion .

But... according the info added at this message board here, (or they try to prove with all the records and info) Cornelis Vos and Cornelis Bogaert were different people and it says that Cornelis Vos was the one married to Dirkje Pieters ...

The guardians of the estate of Dirkje Pieters, deceased… wife of Cornelis Vos… signed Barent Pieterse Coeyman…. 12-22 March 1665..” (Early records. the city and county of Albany) p. 71)

Hope it helps , sure is rough :D
