Any information known about the family of Ernst Gustav Wagner born on 18-07-1879 in Oberesslingen, Esslingen?

I am looking for information on the parents and siblings of my great grandfather Ernst Wagner. Can anyone help?

Hi Vicky, since 1876 all births, death an marriages in Germany had to be registered at the civil registry office (=Standesamt). You might ask the current Standesamt standesamt@esslingen.de, whether the could sent you a copy of the birth entry. If they still have it normally they will sent it to you for a small fee. Otherwise they might tell you which archive you have to ask. Before 1875 you could have a look at the parish books. If he was protestant you find the parish books of Oberesslingen at www.archion.de/en . To have a look at the scans of the church books you have to subscribe to the website (e.g. 1 months about 20 Euro). It is really worth it (if you can try to read German especially in old writing - one gets used to it). But first I would start with the civil registry office.

Hi Manuela, thank you so much!!  I had looked everywhere I could think of but was unaware of sources you have shared.  This has been a brick wall for me for a number of years and then when I obtained Ernst's birth information I thought I had made the breakthrough, but I think that has only happened now. I was really stuck.

Look what I was able to obtain !!!.  Your tip was super helpful and I now have a copy of the birth record.  The only small problem now is to read what it says, the writing is very flat so it's difficult to figure.

Cool. That was really quick. I had a short look at the document. His mother is Büglerin (=ironer) Carolina Wagner from Heilbronn. No father, so he seems to be an illegitimate child. I have no time now, but will have a second look at it later.

Hi Vicky, I posted a German transcript and an English translation as a comment of the document. You may go back now to the city archive of Esslingen and ask them, whether they might have a death certificate of Carolina (or Karolina) Wagner. Maybe they are willing to do some research. But it might also be that she died elsewhere or that she got married and had another last name at death. The death certificate should normally give you her exact birth date.  In the local heritage book of Oberesslingen I found a Karolina which is supposed to be born in 1855 in Heilbronn. http://ofb.genealogy.net/namelist.php?nachname=WAGNER&ofb=oberesslingen&modus=&lang=de. You might try to look at the church books of Heilbronn in the indicated period of time. However, Wagner is a rather common last name in Germany so it´s quite possible that you will find more than one Carolina....
