Oscar Clyde Vallery was married several times in his life - Roseline Brossett (1876-1915), Luella Julia Bynog (1891-1969), Olena Williams Henley, and lastly, Katherine "Dolly" Coutee Cooley (1881-1967). He was from Natchitoches, Louisiana then later moved to Monroe, Louisiana. He had a half-brother, Amos Bennett (1873-1919), to him through his mother, Mary Ann Cherron (1841-1929) and he was said to have had a half-sister on his father's side. But I've never heard a name for his father. People said his nickname was 'Charmain' but that's all I've ever heard. On his death certificate, it lists Mary Ann as his mother and a man named Frank Vallery as his father but I'm not sure who this Frank is. I thought possibly he could be Francois Vallery (1853-????), brother of Benoist Vallery but I'm not sure. Benoist's son, Gilmer "Boy" Vallery, was a distant cousin of Oscar's and according to stories they were "raised like brothers". But again, I have no idea of how closely they were related to figure out just who Oscar's father was. If anybody knows this more about this, please let me know.

I just realized that on that 1860 census, living next door to Francois Vallery are Arthur and Mary Ann Bennette. This may be Mary Ann and her first husband, assuming she was ever married to Vallery, before the birth of any children.

Thank you to everyone who replied and tried to help me figure this one out but I finally found it! Apparently Oscar's father was a man named Lucien Victor Vallery - he wrote it down in a marriage license that I stumbled across.

He was born in 1867. HIs father was Benoist. He is in the 1870 and 1880 census records with Benoist and Pauline Vallery.

After doing a bit more digging, it's possible that Oscar's father was Benoist's first cousin, Francois b. 1829, the son of his father's (Jacques) brother, Francois b. 1805.

In the 1860 census, he is five families up from Jacque's family on the same page. I can't find him after that census. If Oscar's parents died or couldn't care for him for some reason, a young cousin with a child might take him in and raise him as his own.

No, actually that's not the right Oscar. Benoist did indeed have a son named Oscar as well but Oscar Clyde was born in 1878 for sure, not 1867. Plus, Pauline was definitely not his mother. I'd seen a lot of people saying that online for some reason but it's not the correct information.

Yes, Arthur was Mary Ann's first husband. Although as far as I know, she was never married to Oscar's father. When Oscar was about 4 years old, she re-married to a man named Nicholas Beaudoin and Oscar's half-brother Amos ended up marrying that man's daughter from a previous marriage, Victorine Beaudoin. Well, I've never been able to find Oscar in any census living with Mary Ann until about 1920 where she's older and widowed. I also had found though that by 1870 when Mary Ann was 28, she was check-marked in the Deaf, Dumb, Blind, or Insane column so I wonder if maybe she was in an institute of some sort for a while and maybe Oscar lived with family at the time...
Also Oscar Clyde Vallery was my grandfather's grandfather - I'm his great-great granddaughter so I could all of my information straight from someone who knew him to confirm whether he was born in 1878 or 1867.
Yes that's the right grave but again, wrong birth year.
